Chapter 34 Oliviaâs heart shuddered, knowing she could not explain herself again.
John would probably not believe her even if she told him everything.
In the middle of the standoff, Dorothy lay in Johnâs arms and cried, âJohnny, please donât blame Liv for this. Itâs me... Itâs because of me... I saw something I shouldnât have seen. Thatâs why she strangled me.â
âShe strangled you?â
John looked at Dorothyâs neck and saw visible finger marks on her fair and flawless skin. His gaze darkened, and he questioned sternly, âOlivia, did you strangle her?â
Knowing she could not deny it, Olivia took a deep breath and nodded. âYes, I did. Itâs because...â
Before she could finish, John snapped at her. âDorothy, tell me why she strangled you!â
Dorothy glanced at Olivia cautiously, then looked at John with fear. She bit her lips. âJohnny, itâs alright. Iâm fine. Letâs forget about it. Pretend you didnât see that, okay?â âSpeak!â
John only said one word, yet it suffocated Olivia.
She knew Dorothy would twist the truth.
In the next moment, she heard Dorothyâs trembling voice. âI was sleeping upstairs. Suddenly, I heard a noise in the living room. I came out and saw...â
â
She paused, frowning as if she did not want to say more. Johnny, I-I canât say anymore. If I continue, Liv might hate me forever. I ...donât want that to happen.â
Dorothyâs acting was so impressive that even Olivia almost believed her.
However, John had no intention of letting it go. He stared at Olivia and demanded, âTell me!â
Zac could no longer remain silent. He tried to explain. John, I can tell you the truth if you want to know. Itâs because...â
(C (C âWhen I turned on the light, I saw Mr. Quinton walk in. with Liv in his arms, and they kissed on the sofa...â
They spoke at the same time, and Dorothyâs voice was louder than Zacâs.
A sudden silence fell upon the room.
John could not bear it anymore. He pushed Dorothy away and dashed toward Zac, pulling Olivia out of his embrace.
âHe squinted his eyes and looked at her with a warning gaze. âWell, Olivia. You cheated on me when you were pregnant, and now youâre doing it again when youâre ill.
Are you that desperate for another man?â
He reached out and grabbed her jaw. âAm I not enough for you, or are you just a sl*t?â
Olivia knew Dorothy would accuse her of something she had not done. However, she did not expect Dorothy to accuse her of cheating. She was startled and did not know how to speak up for herself.
âJohn! Dorothy is lying. Olivia and I are here to save someone.â
âSave someone?â
John sneered. âYou came to the peninsula to save someone? Is someone being murdered here? Why donât I know about it, then?â
âYou have to ask Dorothy. Perhaps she can answer you.â
âZac!â John raised his voice, âYouâre a lawyer, and youâre telling me Dorothy is trying to kill someone on the peninsula?â
Zac was about to attempt to convince John when he heard him scoff. âItâs ridiculous!â
âJohn...â
âZac, I have no time to deal with you regarding all this nonsense. Get lost!â
âJohnny, itâs Uncle Wallace... Dorothy has Uncle Wallace with her. I came here to save him. Please help me save Uncle Wallace.â
Olivia tried to calm herself down and begged John. â Please, trust me this one time, okay?â
âTrust you?â
Olivia nodded.
John looked at her with disgust. âOlivia, do you think Iâm a fool? Uncle Wallace has gone back to the countryside. Is he here?
Canât you at least think of a good lie the next time you try to pull your tricks?â
Olivia tried to explain, but she saw Dorothy smiling triumphantly at her from behind John.
Suddenly, disappointment struck Olivia, and she did not want to explain anymore.
Uncle Wallace was probably not in the house. Otherwise, Dorothy would not be so calm.
Olivia would have to go elsewhere to find him. She could not waste more time with John.
Not knowing where she found the courage, she grabbed Zac and pleaded with tears shimmering in her eyes. âMr. Quinton, please take me away. Will you please take me to look for Uncle Wallace?â
