Drr-rring!
Hearing the ringing doorbell echo throughout the house, Lucas rushed to the front door hastily.
âDid you get it?â He questioned as he opened, his voice alert and breathless.
âItâs right here.â The other voice answered, his tone low and uncaring.
Wondering why there was commotion: Zaron, Veena and Tobi poked their heads out from the lounge area slyly. To their surprise, Marc was standing at the door with a large crate in tow behind him. Although his facial expression showed no sense of compassion or enthusiasm, it seemed out of character for him to assist Lucas on an errand voluntarily. Additionally, Lucas was displaying an odd mix of excitement and anxiety as he inspected the package. From what the trio could assume, the package of interest was vitally important.
As his father continued to inspect the crate, Marc switched to the three spying from the lounge, his judging gaze as condescending as ever. Zaron was the first to meet his sights, stiffening up abruptly as flashbacks to the other night reared its ugly head. He attempted to pay no mind on the subject, only for Marcâs piercing glare continued to haunt him at every turn. Veena and Tobi were far too preoccupied with the crate to notice what was occurring between them, completely oblivious to the tension that loomed overhead. Admittedly, Zaron preferred to keep it that way.
âAlright. Letâs move it into the garage.â Lucas requested with a satisfied nod.
Hearing his father's request, Marc silently complied. Taking his eyes away from the curious trio, Marc pulled the trolley-cart with the crate and followed his father over to the garage. Just then, Tobi leapt out from the lounge in chase of the two the moment they disappeared.
âHey, wait! Whatâs in the box?â He called out in curiosity as he turned the corner.
âNone of your concern.â Marc responded bluntly as he glanced over his shoulder, speaking for their fatherâs stead.
âI didn't ask you.â Tobi sneered back at his twin in disgust.
âMarc ... what did I tell you...?â Lucas mumbled underneath his breath before switching to Tobi. âI'll let you three know later, I still need to work out a few of the kinks first.â
And with that, Lucas â along with Marc â set off for the garage. Tobi watched them momentarily, feeling he was isolated from the conversation. However, a sense of curiosity consumed his mind, even more determined to find out what was inside the crate.
âSo ... what's going on?â
Tobi switched to the two Draiken as he heard Zaron ask the question, both stepping out of the lounge whilst they were equally curious of the crate and its mystery content. Revealing his hardened expression and focused gaze, Tobiâs mind was set.
âWe need to do some recon.â He answered with an intense tone, heightened with anticipation.
Both Zaron and Veena stared at him in confusion.
***
The trio were standing in front of the garageâs back door, located conveniently at the far end of the kitchen. Leading the team, Tobi planted his ear against the varnished wood of the door. Zaron and Veena stood beside him idly, waiting for the young Cobalt to reveal the answers. They were standing there for over an hour, and yet there was no hint of progress in their recon. The patience of the two Draiken deteriorated to the point of boredom. Even though neither of them would dare to admit it, their drifting eyes were proof enough that they had reached their limit.
âMaybe ⦠we should just knock on the door and ask.â Veena suggested eventually, hoping Tobi would find reason.
âOr we could â you know ⦠wait until your dad is ready?â Zaron added bluntly, his tone irritable. âWhateverâs in that crate, Iâm sure itâd suck for him to have his surprise spoiled before the official reveal.â
Tobi glanced at the two, disappointment morphed into his expression.
âWhy are you guys so boring? Where's the fun in âwaitingâ?â He murmured to the two Draiken. âAlso, whyâs Marc allowed to see the contents before us?! Thereâs no way Iâm standing for that!â
He then switched back and proceeded to listen through the wood of the door, his motivation as inflated as ever. Zaron sighed out in frustration, his body fidgeting impatiently. On the other hand, Veena crossed her arms and considered leaving Tobi to his lonesome.
However, Tobi then twitched.
âWait! I hear them!â He informed them eagerly, strengthening his exaggerated position. âItâs quiet. But I think I can...â
Zaron and Veena edged closer, their curiosity rising as they previous qualms evaporated immediately. Tobi readjusted himself against the door once again, his ear planted against the wood.
âOh! They're saying-!"
BANG!
âYE-OUCH!!!â
The door had opened out with sudden force, smacking Tobi hard in the side of the head. After a loud, abrupt yelp, he hobbled back from the door with his hand firm against his ear. Witnessing the impact occur, Zaron and Veena reacted with a pained jolt. As everyone expected, Marc emerged from the door.
âWeâre saying that you should stop eavesdropping on us, you moron.â
Showing no sympathy for his brother's predicament, Marc glared down upon him like a pathetic eyesore. He even refused to acknowledge Zaron and Veenaâs existence, focusing solely on Tobi.
âYou can screw off, you dickweed!â Tobi roared back at his twin in bewildered scorn, holding back his whimpers as he soothed his throbbing ear.
âYouâre one to talk.â Marc countered in a monotone murmur, reinforcing his antagonistic stance.
Zaron was prepared to speak out in protest â only to be beaten to the punch.
âCould you at least tell us when weâll expect to see it?â Veena asked politely, stepping up into Marcâs direct eyeshot. âWeâve gotten a little impatient, thatâs all.â
Feeling a sense of looming tension in the air, Zaron tensed up in caution â his fists clenched. Ever since his previous encounter with Marc, Zaron found the underlying prejudice in his tone as clear as the summer sky. And yet, whilst he was prepared for any forthcoming backlash by the moody Cobalt twin, he was left fearful with how Marc planned to treat Veena with her question. For a brief second, Marc stared directly at Veena with a judging gaze, his mind completely unreadable.
SLAM!
â¦Click!
In that moment, the silent Marc shut the door with an unexpected brunt force, locking it immediately upon contact.
âHeâs as pleasant as always...â
Veenaâs expression twisted into a scowl as she muttered irritably, holding back her temper. On the other hand, Zaron was glad that Marc kept his silence, feeling as though a catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Sighing out in relief, he switched to his two companions with a firm expression.
âLetâs head back to the lounge.â
Just then, Tobi straightened up immediately upon hearing Zaronâs suggestion.
âAre you serious?! You canât just give up like that!â He objected in a hasty outburst, his passion fuelling his protest.
And yet, Zaron stood his ground, his expression unwavering.
âFine! Have it your way, coward! Iâll just barge in there myself! Thereâs no way Iâm going to let Marc win!â
In that moment, Tobi switched back to the garage door, veins popping from his forehead and teeth grinding hard as arrogance consumed his mind.
Grab!
However, before he could attempt to force open the door, he was halted in place immediately with hands locked on both shoulders. He twisted his head back, noticing the two Draiken preventing his pursuit with unbreakable grips.
âErr...! Why are you two looking at me like that?â Tobi questioned them nervously, feeling a hostile aura emerge from their bodies.
Both Zaron and Veena had matching expressions, their blank eyes and soulless grins radiating an eerie tone.
âCome on, Tobi. We're only wasting time staying here.â Veena assured him, her outward tone pleasantly soothing.
âWhen I was a young lad, someone once told me: âA true man knows when to leave the table.ââ Zaron added wholeheartedly, his expression radiating confidence. âI believe now is the best time to respect that advice.â
And so, without allowing Tobi the opportunity to speak his mind, Zaron and Veena pushed onto his shoulders in force. They directed their attention towards the hallway, fixated on exiting the kitchen.
âWait! Hold on! We canât go yet!â Tobi continued his frantic objections, attempting to slip out of their titanium-grip to no avail. âDammit! We almost had it! Come on, Iâm begging you here!â
His pleads were ignored, the eyes of the two Draiken trained on the exit.
âJust a little longer and weâll know whatâs in the-!!!â
SLAM!
The two forced the young Cobalt through the door and out of the kitchen, kicking the door shut as they passed. And so, the recon ended in failure.
***
âThank you for waiting.â Lucas expressed to the two Draiken humbly.
âTskâ¦!â
Tobi refused to acknowledge any of the three in the eye, his arms crossed firmly and face holding a bitter pout.
Zaron, Veena, Lucas and Tobi were all standing in the garage, surrounding all four sides of the crate. As though it was a routine, the moment the two Draiken entered the scene, Marc had exited twice as fast. They assumed automatically that he returned to his room, preferring to avoid any acknowledgment of their existence.
(Why am I not surprisedâ¦)
Zaron sighed as his thoughts murmured, preferring to focus only on the crate. Glancing to his right, he noticed Veenaâs eyes were dazzling as she awaited the reveal. She had no clue of the contents within, yet she was convinced that it was game-changing for both the Draiken and the Cobalts. Witnessing her express such high levels of excitement caused a warm grin to curl from Zaronâs mouth, overjoyed to see her cheerful demeanour.
âNow then, without further adoâ¦â Lucas announced finally to the trio, placing his hands on the edges of the crateâs lid.
Zaron and Veena drew closer, their hearts racing. Tobi broke away from his pout and peaked at the crate as his father revealed the contents.
Click! Creakâ¦!
ââ*GASP?!*ââ
The two Draiken peered into the crate; mouths agape as they held their breaths in awe. Lucas watched them with a sense of accomplishment, feeling pride in his new handiwork.
ââ¦â
A moment of silence passed.
âWhat ⦠am I looking at here?â Zaron questioned in blunt confusion, his initial anticipation dissipated.
âThose, my good friend ⦠are your tickets to the outside world.â Lucas informed gracefully in response. âAs long as theyâre attached to you, you can explore Humesa to your heartâs content.â
âThey look weird.â Tobi admitted in a low murmur, consumed with disappointment.
Lucas then eyed his son with a deathly glare, vowing silently that payback was guaranteed for the boy. He then switched back to the two Draiken, intrigued to watch their reactions.
âZaron. Veena. Would you kindly attach them to your wings?â He requested in a polite manner, taking a step back from the crate.
Zaron and Veena straightened back up in sudden surprise.
âOur ⦠wings?â Zaron blurted out in echo.
Zaron and Veena glanced to each other briefly, acting wary before complying with the suggestion. With Lucas and Tobiâs assistance, the two young Draiken proceeded to fit on the equipment. The equipment in question were technical-based overlays designed specifically to be worn over the limbs and joints of their wings. They were metallic and plain, yet they were very flexible once fitted. However, the underside of the overlays emulated a neon-blue, futuristic glow. Once attached, the overlays felt as though they could pass off as wing-armour.
âTheyâre tight.â
Veena was the first to comment on wearing the overlays, wincing out as she flexed her wings and shoulder-blade joints. The metallic overlays were adjustable over the wings â regardless of its wearer. However, for the overlays to activate without malfunction, they were required to be attached as tightly as possibly onto the bearer â or thatâs what Lucas assured them.
âFunny enough, your mothers frequently used these overlays during their many undercover missions.â Lucas informed the two Draiken. âWithout them, Terra and Rowena wouldâve resorted to wearing excessively long cloaks and restrictive harnesses. And let me tell you ⦠trying to convince Rowena to wear a harness was suicide.â
âYeah ⦠that sounds about right.â Veena murmured in embarrassment, flustered at the thought of her motherâs arrogant tendencies.
âSo, what do we do to make them work?â Zaron followed up in question, cutting straight to the point. âDo we just wear them and look foolish in the process, orâ¦?â
Lucas turned to Zaron with a cunning smirk.
âIâll show you.â
Just then, Zaron noticed Tobi step up directly behind him, as though he was programmed by his fatherâs words. Lucas also stepped up to Veena in the process, causing the Draiken to watch on consciously as they felt the atmosphere change. And then, the two Cobalts nodded to each other in anticipation.
âItâs quite simple.â Lucas explained, pointing to the centre of Veena's back in demonstration. âAt the base of the devices, all you need to do is press the main switch like so.â
In unison, Lucas and Tobi pressed down on the switch.
Click! ...ZAPP!!!
âGYAH!â
âYEEK!!!â
The process was so sudden that Zaron and Veena had no time to prepare mentally. As the switch activated, an abrupt shockwave was sent through their spines, coursing towards their shoulder blades and spreading throughout the extent of their wings. Whilst the shock itself lacked and notable pain, the overall sensation disorientated them considerably and numbed the affected limbs. And then, within seconds of the shock, the two lost their balance entirely and fell to the floor.
Clump! Bang!
âAre you two okay?!â Tobi gasped in worry, dropping to his knees hastily to assist them.
âI-I can't ... feel my wings!â Zaron panicked as he sprawled out on the garage floor.
âWhat did you do to us?!â Veena spat out in bewilderment, struggling to find her feet.
However, Lucas sighed, as though expecting the outcome.
âJust give it a moment.â
The two Draiken gazed at Lucas, their bodies trembling as they continued their attempts to regain stability â only to end in failure. As time passed, Zaron elevated to his hands and knees, albeit his body shaking immensely. Only the other hand, Veena resorted to relying on the nearby wall to hoist herself up, feeling as though she would collapse again at any moment. Tobi watched on worriedly, flinching and reacting every moment the two slipped, stumbled, or lost balance entirely. He offered his assistance to them, only to be declined by both Draike bluntly. Eventually, the Draiken rose to their feet, anxiously holding each other for equal stability. Meanwhile, Lucas approached them with a mirror in hand, chuckling openly at the sight before him.
âAre you two having fun?â
âY-yeah...! Itâs been swell.â Zaron mumbled in sarcastic response, his tone deep and bitter. âWhatâs with the mirror?â
Veena watched on, unable to speak a word as she focused her concentration on retaining her balance. As though he had timed it perfectly, Lucas held the mirror up in front of them.
âSee for yourself.â
The two stared at their own reflection momentarily, narrowing their gaze as they wondered what Lucas was referring to. And then, their eyes shot open in horror.
ââWHERE ARE OUR WINGS?!?!ââ
From the sudden lack of balance to the difficulty of standing on their own two feet, it all finally made sense: their wings had vanished completely.
***
âThe overlays you're both wearing are âHuman-Draikenâ hybrid technology â in fact, they are the last known hybrids developed before the fallout between our nations.â Lucas then revealed informatively. âAs I mentioned earlier, the overlays are purposed to mask a Draiken's unique features for incognito purposes. Simply speaking, you two will be able to pass as humans without raising suspicion.â
He then proceeded to explain how the hybrid overlays functioned:
âThe overlays send shockwaves into the wing muscles like an anaesthetic, numbing the limbs for extensive periods of time. In that time, they would then spend a few minutes masking the entire sets wings until they become invisible â or camouflaged, if we want to be technical.â
âWhat if we want to use our wings again?â Zaron asked out, his gaze fixated on his âwinglessâ reflection.
âSimple. If the wearer desires to reverse the effects, all they need to do is click the power switch on their back again and allow up to thirty minutes for the numbness to dissolve.â Lucas answered easily, waving off the question as though he required a true challenge.
âWhat if a stranger touches our wings accidentally whilst weâre in âincognitoâ mode? Wouldnât that cause a few issues?â Veena then added in question, reaching over her shoulder to feel her invisible wings.
âAh! A fair question.â Lucas accepted in prideful response. âYou see, the overlays donât just mask the wings from view. If someone were to touch the wings unknowingly, the overlays would emit small static shocks and reject the opposing force â like an invisible barrier. So, the stranger in question wouldn't even notice, I guarantee it.â
As Lucas passed the mirror to them, the revitalised Zaron and Veena further investigated their new appearance. After overcoming the initial shock, the two Draiken grew appreciative of the wing-overlays. They respected the sheer level of thought and detail installed in the mechanics, wondering how such advanced technology was created decades ago.

âWhat do you mean when you say a âHuman-Draikenâ hybrid?â He asked in intrigue as he switched back to Lucas.
âA piece of tech is classified as a âHuman-Draikenâ hybrid when there is contribution from both species.â Lucas responded coolly, stating the obvious. âIt also refers to technology that uses both Humesa and Dragora materials. If successful: weird and wonderful things tend to be invented. Weâve had: power-infused battle-suits, elemental weapon-upgrades, anti-gravity armour ... among many others.â
The two Draiken stared at him with a widened gaze.
(Power-infused Battle Suits...?!) Zaron thought excitedly.
(Elemental Weapon-upgrades...?!) Veena gasped in awe.
(ANTI-GRAVITY ARMOUR?!) Their imaginations echoed out in sync. (WHERE DO I SIGN?!)
Lucas crossed his arms with an amused smirk, understand their expressions wholeheartedly.
âYou two are wondering about the âotherâ hybrid tech.â He then assumed, reading their minds with ease. âWell, I be honest with you ... I have no idea where they are or if they even still exist.â
And with that, Zaron and Veenaâs electrified expressions dropped instantaneously.
âOuch. No need to look so depressed.â Lucas laughed out. âMany hybrid tech were demolished during the post-war fallout â as was the protocol at the time. Given how thorough they were tracking it all down, Iâd be very surprised if any slipped through the cracks.â
(Damn, that blows...)
Zaron's heart sank bitterly, cursing his naivety over the predicable outcome. On the other hand, the curious Veena decided to speak her mind.
âWho kept these overlays secret?â
Lucas paused momentarily at the question. The three watched him as he considered his response, feeling they were about the get a vague half-answer.
âA friend...â Lucas murmured in admittance, a mixture of unreadable emotions as the person appeared in his mind. âShe's a lifelong friend to the Ultima ... thatâs all I can say for now.â

The town of Ferradon was thriving with life. Although it was a small and compact overall, its welcoming aura resulted in packed streets filled with families, couples, social groups, and everything in between. Additionally, various market stalls and concession stands were established throughout the town centre, advertising their wares and beaming with non-stop charisma as the potential customers approached their shop. The day marked an annual for the residence of Ferradon and its neighbouring towns: a tradition celebrated over centuries of generations.
âWow ⦠they really went all out!â Veena gasped in an excited manner, admiring the townâs decorations.
âWhatâs the occasion?â Zaron wondered curiously, his eyes engrossed in the surrounding culture.
âThe Festival of the Creative Arts.â Tobi answered in announcement, emulating a prideful posture as he led the two Draiken through the streets.
VroooOOOSH!!!
Just as he announced the title, a trio of red-arrow jet-planes fly overhead, soaring parallel as streaks of colourful vapour appeared in their wake. The trio gazed up in awe, Zaron and Veena gawking at the velocity of the red-arrows whilst Tobi relished in their reactions.
âThe town holds the event on an annual basis, preaching and celebrating human creativity.â Tobi then continued to explain, proceeding to take lead. âArtists of all backgrounds would set up shop, sell their work, and â if theyâre fortunate enough â make a name for themselves.â
âAre the red planes considered a âcreative artâ?â Veena questioned as she watched the red-arrows twist and curve in the distance.
Tobi shook his head, âNo ... thatâs just the town burning money over spectacle.â
The two nodded in understanding as they watched the red-arrows disappear over the canopy of buildings. Zaron then glanced to Veena, who was intrigued by the numerous wares displayed in front of the many stalls. Although swaying occasionally and tripping off-balance, Zaron and Veena felt they had finally overcome the struggle from their absent wings. Their first step into the open world was nerve-racking, feeling their chances of exposure rising as they distanced themselves from the house. The anxiety was further elevated upon remembering the laws and subsequent consequences mentioned by the Cobalts, praying their overlays avoid any hint of malfunction. However, upon reaching the busy streets of Ferradon, the two Draiken found no one batting an eye to their direction.
As they shifted and weaved through the crowds, there were occasions where passing humans bumped into them unintentionally. And yet, no one took notice, some ignoring them whilst others apologised to the trio before returning to browse the stalls.
(These overlays are a godsend...!)
Zaronâs mind was filled with relief, feeling as though he was released from his restraints after an eternity.
Eventually, the trio reached the centre of town: Ferredon Square. As with the streets, Ferradon Square was thriving with an overabundance of decorations and visual attractions, further adding to the heightened enthusiasm that engulfed the atmosphere. Banners, flags, and other decorative ornaments swayed freely from the rooftops, advertising the latest highlights of the marketâs products. Employees and volunteers were parading around the square, handing out leaflets and freebies whilst convincing idle consumers in their companyâs products. Some members even dressed themselves in eccentric cosplay as part of their advertisement campaign, engrossed fully in their act.
Although Ferradon Square was spacious in size compared to the surrounding streets, the abundance of crowds gathering felt suffocating. Many flocked around the main batch of stalls that dominated the square, transitioning from one stall to the next in hopes of finding the best bargains.
Both Zaron and Veena halted upon noticing the crowds, observing with a mixture of awe and caution, unsure if it was wise to jump into the relentless carnage.
âThis is ⦠insane.â Zaron murmured out, a grin cemented across his face as his gazed at the boisterous crowds.
âI wouldnât go that far, mate.â Tobi shrugged in response, albeit appreciative of the gesture. âI mean, the town only goes this far with their events only a few times each year. Every other time, itâs basically a ghost town.â
Zaron nodded as a vacant murmur escaped his breath, âQuiet is good too.â
âIâm surprised you find this insane, considering you get to watch floating cities pass overhead.â Tobi then jabbed back playfully.
âOi, hold up!â Zaron scoffed, âThat only happened once every few years. Weâd be lucky if they even flew near us â let alone overhead.â
âYeah, but ... think about it. Compare a bog-standard town dressed up in decorations over a literal floating city.â Tobi retorted in debate, crossing his arms and rolling his eyes. âFace it. Us humans pale in comparison to you guys.â
âVeena, tell Tobi itâs not-!â Zaron called out, only to notice she was silent during the chat. ââ¦Veena?â
He and Tobi switched to where they thought Veena was standing, realising she had disappeared instantly. Their hearts leapt, glancing around desperately as they searched for any sign of her. Aware of the unnecessary attention, they restricted any irrational actions to a minimum. Just then, Tobi tapped Zaronâs shoulder, causing him to leap out of his skin in fright.
âItâs fine. Sheâs over there.â He confirmed to the Draiken calmly, pointing over to one of the nearby stalls on their left.
Following his finger, Zaron sighed in relief upon noticing the distinguishable long scarlet hair. They spotted Veena hunched over the display table of the nearby stall, standing amongst a small group of likeminded onlookers. Her eyes were fixated on a singular object, obscured from view by the other viewers.
(Whatâs she looking at?)
Zaron decided to step over and accompany her, squinting his eyes as he attempted to spot any hint of her item of interest. Noticing Zaron make his way towards the stall, Tobi followed close behind â reminding himself not to let either of them out of his sight.
âThereâs a time and place to wonder off on your own, Veena.â Zaron warned as she approached her from behind. âDonât forget, Lucas said we need to stick together.â
However, her response was not what he expected.
â...I want one.â
Zaron stared at her.
âWhat?â
She then switched to him hastily, placing hands on both his shoulders as she gazed into his eyes with glee.
âZaron, I want one!â She expressed ecstatically; her eyes lit up as bright as the stars in the clear night sky.
The unexpected declaration of selfishness caught Zaron off-guard, unable to find the words to respond. He could feel his cheeks fluster, transfixed by her radiant expression and beauty. From the length of time he had known her, a few options appeared in his mind that could explain her sudden burst of excitement. Shuffling through the assorted options, it took no time for him to assume to most likely candidate.
He peered over her shoulder gradually and eyed the table before them, curious to see if his prediction matched.
âA camera ⦠why am I not surprised?â He muttered underneath his breath, his suspension on point.
Situated in Zaronâs sight was a high-performance, state-of-the-art, one-of-a-kind, multi-purposed Digital Camera â as stated by the attached price-tag. Itâs glossy-black sheen reflected the overbearing sunâs rays with pride, visually exclaiming to the browsing customers that it was true to its quality.
Admittedly, Zaron also felt its attraction. He observed the various enlarged photos that were displayed on the table surrounding the camera, engrossed immediately by their beauty and crisp detail. The photos were like canvases, each one displaying a distinct impression that they were crafted artistically using various materials.
Although the subject of the photos was landscape-focused â such as luscious forests, mountain-ranges, lakes, and fields â there were a select few that focused on other popular aspects of photography as a medium. One displayed a flock of animals playing amongst the grass; another was set in the city nightlife; various sea-life thriving on the ocean floor; a young couple overlooking the sunset; and a thin, calming stream breaking through the forest valley: every image was as captivating as the next.
Zaron then eyed the price.
âTobi.â He called out casually.
âAye sir.â Tobi responded as he stepped up beside him, his expression stoic and serious.
âTell me, how expensive is that camera?â Zaron proceeded to ask him with a straight expression, ignoring Veenaâs anticipated stare.
Tobi adjusted his position momentarily, snatching a glance of the price-tag.
The price-tag stated: â3,200 Lenilâ
Then, a cool, calmed grin broke through his lips.
âMy friend...â He answered back with a vague sigh. âLet me put it this way: Would I â an eighteen-year-old who recently finished his education, currently has no job, and still lives in his fatherâs house with his twin brother â have a faction of the funds required for a brand-new, high-end camera?â
Zaron hesitated briefly.
âNo.â
âThereâs your answer.â Tobi concluded with a simple nod.
Hearing this, Zaron switched back to Veena immediately.
âSorry, Veena. Looks like the camera on your wish-list for now.â
However, he was met with a disappointed, glaring pout from his lifelong friend, her excitement shattered beyond repair over such betrayal. Even though he could easily tell the forced exaggeration into her frown, he felt sorry for her. Her smartphone was missing when they awoke in Humesa and the Cobalts lacked any substantial camera equipment alongside their flip-phone cameras. Zaron could only watch as Veena let out a sombre sigh, her eyes lowering as she was consumed with the inner turmoil in her heart.
âYeah, youâre right ⦠what was I thinking?â She admitted in a quiet murmur, avoiding eye-contact. âI let my desires get the better of me ⦠my bad.â
She separated her hands from Zaronâs shoulders and switched back to the stall, her eyes peering at the camera with a fixated gaze. From that point, she froze into place, staring silently at the camera whilst shutting out her surroundings. It was as though she was controlled by the device's will, mimicking a statue perfectly. Zaron continued to observe from behind her, unable to shake the feeling that there could be a compromise.
In that moment, his body twitched.
(Huh What was that?)
He glanced around, feeling as though a pair of eyes was targeting him from a safe distance.
âSo ⦠she has a thing for cameras?â Tobi then muttered in curious assumption.
Shaking his head, Zaron ignored the ominous presence and returned to reality.
âYou could say that.â He answered as he switched to Tobi with a smirk. âFor as long as Iâve known her, sheâs always had an interest in photography. In fact, itâs impossible to pry her away from browsing camera equipment sometimes.â
The two chuckled out briefly, before dropping their grins suddenly as they came to a dreaded realisation.
âSheâs not going to move, is she...?â Tobi then questioned with a deadpan stare.
âNope.â Zaron answered bluntly.
âDo you need help moving her?â
âYep.â
With a synchronized nod to each other, the two stepped forward and grasped a designated arm. The statue â formerly known as Veena â showed no reaction, her eyes absorbed on the camera and surrounding photos entirely. After the count of three, the two pulled and directed her away from the stall, her feet dragging across the pavement.
***
âWas it really necessary to drag me away like that?â Veena questioned the two, lacking any amusement. âYou could have just told me that we were moving on.â
âYeah ... but I know you, Veena.â Zaron countered in a blunt response, refusing to accept her excuses. âYou would've spent ages fixated on that camera with no awareness of the outside world. I even reckon the owner wouldâve easily convinced you to buy it along with all its accessories ... even though none of us have the money for it.â
â...Mmph...!â
Veena spoke no more, feeling she was caught red-handed. The three were now travelling up a gravelled pathway with Tobi leading the way. Their breaths grew heavy as they ascended the rising slope, wondering when the path would flatten out. Tobi mentioned briefly that they were situated on the outskirts of Ferradon, travelling towards one of the townâs crowning attractions. It was further proven by the change in scenery: small and large trees were of plenty, lined up in a similar fashion to the townâs buildings; spanning fields through the gaps of the treeline vast and ambient; and the pathway they treaded through was worn and crumbled the further they climbed.
âWhere exactly are you taking us, Tobi?â Zaron decided to ask openly.
Tobi swivelled round to the two Draiken behind him, trekking backwards up the hill as he proceeded to answer.
âItâs just over this hill and weâll reach Ferradonâs âpride-and-joyâ.â He answered freely, brimming with anticipation. âAs nice as the festivals are, they can be overwhelming with the crowds blocking the walkways and invading your personal space. Sometimes, a bit of breathing space is just the thing we need ... and this town provides it in spades.â
As he finished his statement, the treelines either side opened out gradually whilst the rising path flatten off. The sunâs bright rays broke through the canopy above, presenting a heavenly glow upon the trio. Zaron and Veena squinted reactively as the light caught their eyes, taking time to adjust from the abrupt change in brightness. During that moment, Tobi swivelled back and faced ahead.
âWhenever I need to escape for a bit, I just chill out here.â
As Zaron and Veenaâs eyes adjusted to the strong rays, they gawked immediately at the radiant sight before them.
âWhoaâ¦!â
âTh ⦠This is stunning...!â
What they saw was a vast, glistening lake spanning miles in diameter â it was a remarkable sight. Its flowing ripples shining like a beacon, broken only by the occasional passing of waterfowl and small man-made vessels. Adding to the serenity was the blissful environment that surrounded it: from the trip of auburn mountains peering over in the far-off distance, to the endless blue sky above that harboured the occasional stream of cirrus clouds. Additionally, the band of trees continued from the path and circled around the lake, acting as an effective wind-brake for the water.
âFerradonâs hidden gem: Lake Ayra.â Tobi announced to the two with a prideful nod.
ââHiddenââ¦? What do you mean by that?â Veena questioned in bafflement. âThis place is enormous!â
âTrue, I canât deny that.â He then muttered, âItâs just never as popular as youâd expect it to be.â
Veena crossed her arms in doubt.
âI donât buy it.â
âWell, whatever the case, weâll be able to take in the scenery without interruption.â Tobi shrugged in conclusion, brushing off the needless concern. âShall we take a walk?â
Veena was the first to jump at the opportunity, brimming with eagerness. Zaron soon followed, taking a few extra seconds to observe the lakeâs glistening beauty. However, as he stepped forward to join them, he froze up abruptly. A cold shiver crawled up his spine, setting him on edge once more. He felt the same pair of intimidating eyes from earlier, tracking his every movement as it waited for the perfect opportunity to strike.
(Why?)
Zaronâs mind was set on high alert, searching warily for the stalker.
(Do they know our identity...?)
He checked every direction possible: left, right, behind, even up towards the trees above. He then sighed out, feeling agitated at the constant feeling.
(Maybe itâs just my imagination.)
Wondering why he felt such a presence, Zaron was hesitant to move until he found the cause.
âZaron, whatâs the hold up?â Tobi called out to him from a distance, oblivious to his dilemma.
After a final, cautious glance, Zaron rushed to Tobi and Veena, the mysterious presence refusing to leave his mind.

The trio spent the next couple of hours strolling around the lake, chatting away and taking in the astounding scenery. At various points of the walk, they stop and fully appreciate the view â with occasional comments from the photo-starved Veena. During that time, Tobi numbered off his countless facts and highlights of the lake to the two, examples including: its name originating from an ancient Goddess; the numerous priceless artefacts excavated over the years; and the various unique species of animals that resided in the area. Veena listened next to him, nodding away at his facts whilst occasionally switching between him and the mesmerising view of the lake. Every time she eyed the lake, she could imagine various points where she could take the perfect photographs and the numerous settings she could experiment on. She tried to downplay her desperation for a camera, yet the desire continued to loom deep down in her mind.
Finally, Zaron followed from close behind, an anxious aura consuming him as he still felt the odd presence of a stalker. He was quiet, wary, and skittish to every abnormal movement in the vicinity, his hand hovering over the wooden katana. The feeling of uneasiness refused to leave him, and yet he had no luck in pinpointing the location of their elusive stalker. Eventually, the three returned to Ferradon Square, opting for one last browse of the various market stalls before returning home considering it was the late afternoon. Whilst most stalls were still open, the crowds had diminished compared to when the trio had first entered Ferradon allowing them some breathing space as they moved freely through the streets.
Standing near the centre of the square, Tobi switched to the two Draiken eagerly.
âWell, seeing as weâve got some time to kill. Do you guys want to check out some stalls?â Tobi asked them curiously, feeling they deserved some free time to explore on their own.
Keeping a relaxed appearance, Zaron responded cheerfully.
âIâm sure Veena already eyed up the-... and she's gone.â
Before he could even finish his sentence, Veena had already directed her attention to the photography stall. By the time Zaron and Tobi realised, she had returned to her typical entranced state as she inspected the digital camera and photographs with an obsessive gaze.
âWell, I guess she has the right idea.â Tobi commented blankly.
âOh, trust me. The moment sheâs caught her eye on something she likes, sheâll be stuck in that trance for hours.â Zaron chuckled after a light sigh escaped him. âThen again, as long as she doesnât end up stealing anything, it shouldnât be a major issue.â
âAt least itâs nice to see her happy.â Tobi then acknowledged, nudging the young Draiken. âAm I right?â
Zaron watched on momentarily, catching a glimpse of Veena chatting away with the stall owner in glee. In response, a calm, relaxed smile escaped him.
âYeah ... youâre not wrong.â
âGood to hear, man.â Tobi nodded in satisfaction. âAnyway, you should go and browse too. Iâm sure thereâs a few places thatâll catch your eye.â
âHm-hmm ⦠Iâll take you up on that offer.â Zaron agreed coolly, switching back to the Cobalt beside him. âWhat about you? Are you going to browse?â
Just then, Tobi let out a crafty snicker.
âHeh-heh-hehâ¦! Donât you worry about that, buddy. You see, thereâs a tradition I must uphold.â
Zaron gazed at him blankly, âOh? And ... what would that be?â
Tobi then stepped forward in rising anticipation, âThe risqué stall is awaiting my arrival.â
(Wait ⦠what?)
With that, Zaron watched Tobi stroll towards the far corner of the Ferradon Square speechlessly, hands in his pockets and a flame of determination set in his gaze. At first, he was taken aback by the unexpected declaration, not knowing how to respond to such a bold answer. However, he then remembered the large collection covering the walls and ceiling of Tobiâs room.
(Best not think about itâ¦)
With that, he strolled off towards the stall, acting in blissful ignorant. Through his brief browse of the many stalls, Zaron soon found a stall that caught his interest. It was a small blacksmith shop, displaying various hand-made trinkets, tools and devices morphed through a perfect blend of heat and dedicated force. What used to be simple rods of steel and iron were now woven into artistic masterpieces. Although not as colourful or vibrant as some of the other art on display at the festival, there was a unique charm that stood out amongst the rest of the crowd. Feeling drawn by the metallic beauty, Zaron checked his surroundings before stepping up to the stall in curiosity.
He noticed the pair of blacksmiths wearing heatproof aprons behind the display, both preoccupied in the creation of their next project. They were both switching constantly between their blazing forge and the moderately-sized anvils close to them, sparks flying in scattered directions as their hammers struck down consistently. Zaron watched on in fascination, intrigued by the process in action. Approaching the display, the young Draiken was able to observe the many wares on show: bottle-openers, corkscrews, arrowheads, rings, keyrings, necklaces, horseshoes, and many other notable accessories. Shifting focus, the inside walls of the stall were packed with numerous, larger freshly-forged items â many in line with his key interests: axes, daggers, tomahawks, short and long swords, hammers, shovels, signs, and a variety of other metalwork.
With his eyes lit up and grinning from ear-to-ear: Zaron was struck with awe.
âAre ya lookinâ to buy?â One of the blacksmiths called to him suddenly, sparks flying from his hammers continuously as he eyed the curious boy. âOr are ya jusâ browsinââ¦?â
As the Draiken boy faced the blacksmiths, he first noticed the bulking forearms wielding the short yet study forging hammer immediately. Additionally, as the man switched to him, he displayed a beard comparable to the mightiest of men. If the blacksmith had approached him directly, there was no doubt in Zaronâs mind that the man would tower over him. Realising he had yet to respond, Zaron answered back hastily.
â...Ah! Sorry, Iâm just browsing.â Zaron admitted awkwardly, feeling apologetic that he had no money to spend.
âNo prob.â The blacksmith nodded firmly before returning to the anvil. âIf ya donâ mind, weâd be grateful if ya took a card.â
Accepting the request, Zaron picked up a business card at the centre of the display table, reading the company title: âMcIvoryâs Forge: Creation and Repairsâ. Underneath the name was an address, website, telephone number, and email â as expected on a business card. However, as he flipped the card over to its reverse side, the young Draiken took sudden interest with one of the quotes: âWe refine any metallic item ... regardless of size and strength.â
(I wonderâ¦)
Zaron thoughts echoed as an image of his Artoria blade appeared in his mind. At the same time, he slipped the card into his jacket pocket for safekeeping, feeling it could come in handy later down the line.
âWhatâs with the wooden katana?â The other blacksmith â an equally buffed male â then questioned the boy, setting aside his project. âYou jusâ come back from traininâ?â
Upon hearing the question, Zaron glanced down to his hip â where his wooden katana sat resting by his belt.
âOh, this...? Itâs-!â
Ba-bumpâ¦!
Zaron halted immediately, his heart leaping from his chest. It was the same feeling from before: a pair of ominous eyes locked onto him with malice intent. From that moment, Zaron was certain: his identity was compromised.
âSorry ... I need to get going.â Zaron apologised to the two anxiously, shifting away from the stall before the two blacksmiths could respond.
He had no idea if it was one person observing him since entering the festival, or if it was a group tracking him from various points of Ferradon. Regardless of the case, Zaron was desperate to find the culprit(s) before the issue elevated into a disaster, playing they were not also targeting Veena and Tobi. Acting oblivious, the young Draiken discreetly slipped into a nearby crowd, blending with the group in hope of shaking off his elusive pursuer. From what he could see, the crowd had gathered before an indie-rock band, ushering them to hype up the adrenaline over their act â it was the ideal distraction.
(Where are you)
As the crowd surrounding him continued to expand in numbers and jam to the band, Zaron used the opportunity to turn tables on his mysterious pursuer. He searched every direction in range, conscious on minimising his frantic actions. During the search, he caught a brief glance of Veena over by the photography stall, the owner offering her permission to experience the digital camera first-hand. In turn, Veena was beaming ecstatically, flicking through the setting and posing the camera in several directions as she practiced with the desired device. Zaron let out a momentary smirk, appreciative of the ownerâs thoughtful sentiment whilst amused by her overbearing excitement. He then switched to Tobiâs direction instantly, noticing the stall of interest was in earshot of him.
âThis is all well and good, Dex...â Tobi commented slyly, placing the magazine aside whilst his piercing gaze was locked onto the stallâs owner. âHowever, I was hoping for something a little more ⦠exclusive?â
âAh ⦠a fellow man of culture, I see.â The owner â Dex by name â chortled enthusiastically. âWell then, allow me to show you ⦠the Limited Edition.â
As though prepared for this very occasion, Dex slapped a new, sealed magazine on the display table. He watched proudly as Tobi snatched up the magazine without hesitation, analysing the front and back cover in enlightened intrigue. After a few seconds, he lowered the magazine and shook the ownerâs hand firmly.
âYou never disappoint, good sir.â He expressed emotionally, holding back his manly tears.
âI aim to please.â Dex responded with a firm grin, acting as though he was expecting the outcome.
(Iâm just going to ignore thatâ¦)
Zaron veered his gaze, finding the scene that just transpired unbelievably melodramatic â although he was curious of the magazineâs content. The bandâs music increased in pace, growing louder as the crowd clapped and leapt to the catchy tune. Coincidentally, Zaronâs search grew swift and desperate, his pace immense as he matched his rhythm to the music. Every step he took was met with a beat. Every switch of direction was met with another. And then, he glanced up.
Whoosh...!
The world fell silent instantly.
Ba-bump ⦠Ba-bumpâ¦!
Zaronâs eyes widened in disbelief, his heart beating from his chest as he stood frozen on the spot.
Ba-bump! Ba-bumpâ¦!
Everything around him was progressing in slow motion, random individuals passing his line of sight without any notice of him.
Ba-DOOM! Ba-DOOM! Ba-DOOMâ¦!
He found his stalker. Glaring down upon him from the nearby rooftop was a singular, shadow-like figure.
Zaron tensed up.
(Why ⦠why is SHE HERE?!)
With her arm-blades expanded from her forearms and visor locked in the direction of her target: The Crimson Mantis was set to kill.
