Chapter 38 : Why is it always my house?
*********************************************
People who actually enjoy Sundays are not normal to me and it seems like everyone does.
Does this mean I'm the abnormal one?
Whatever.
I appreciate the sleep I get on Sundays but I hate the stress about the upcoming week.
It doesn't help that I have a very important English test on Wednesday and the teacher hates me.
Aaron called me yesterday and we decided that he'd come over today for chemistry because we won't have a very free week after today.
"Please let me open it, we finished!" I continued begging Aaron to allow me to see what's in the bag.
"I said no." Aaron said, making me scoff.
We just finished studying about ten minutes ago and Aaron promised me that I can open the bag he has once we're done.
I want to know what's in the bag so bad, but Aaron is being an asshole.
"Stop pissing me off!!" I exclaimed and Aaron just laughed, making me angrier.
"Stop being curious!!" Aaron said in a high pitched voice, mocking me and as much as I tried not to laugh, I couldn't help it.
"Dinner's ready." Mom's head peaked in as she smiled at us.
"Uh, actually, I need to go home, but thank you." Aaron said but mom didn't take no for an answer.
"Nonsense, you will go home after you have dinner with us, did you not like my cooking last time?" Mom continued, joking with Aaron.
"I loved it." Aaron smiled and we all made our way to the dinner table downstairs.
Mom and I never talked about it. Every time we fight she does this and it kind of frustrates me. She would just ignore the problem and go back to laughing with me as if there was nothing going on.
I guess I'm just thankful it's over.
"So, Aaron, were you born here?" Dad started a conversation with Aaron.
"Yes, but my parents are Italian, actually." Aaron answered and I felt like I've forgotten about that.
Why does he have no accent though?
I guess it's because he's been here his entire life..
I love accents, okay?
"Oh, really!" Mom got excited, her being Italian and all.
"Sì." Aaron smiled and mom got even more excited. (Yes)
"You speak Italian?" Mom asked, in shock.
I'm shocked too, Aaron never spoke Italian in front of me.
"Qualche volta." Aaron replied in Italian again and fuck, he sounds hot. (Sometimes)
I did not just think that..
Dad and I shared the what's going on glance as they continued speaking their language.
"Quanto è infantile Ellie?" Mom said and I immediately asked what does she mean upon hearing my name. (How childish is Ellie?)
"Molto." Aaron replied, laughing. (Very.)
"Dad, tell them to stooop!" I dropped my fork and crossed my arms in a pout.
I know whatever they are saying is bad.
"Okay, okay." Mom laughed with Aaron.
"What were you saying?" I asked, looking at Aaron.
"We were just talking about how smart you are." Aaron replied, making mom chuckle.
"Well you should know that I'm smart enough to know you're lying then." I fired back.
"Drop it." Mom looked at me and when I said no, she reminded me of the food.
"You asked for this dish and I'm not cooking it again in a long time."
"Whatever." I sighed and started eating again.
Once dinner was over, we all helped each other clean the table and put the dishes away for my dad to wash them.
If mom is the one that cooks, it means dad or I has to do the dishes, and vice versa.
Aaron and I went back to my room so he can get his stuff and I kept glancing at the bag.
"You can open it now." Aaron said, handing the bag to me.
"Really?" I grinned.
"Yes." Aaron replied, smiling.
I wasn't prepared for the intense happiness I was going to feel when I looked into the bag.
So naturally I went silent and my mouth was open for twenty seconds straight as I stood frozen, with my jaw dropped.
"Are those.." I started but Aaron finished the sentence for me.
"The twenty oreo donuts that I promised I will get you someday."
"You're kidding." I said, dropping the bag gently and then jumping up and down and embarrassing myself.
That's just how excited I get when I hear about food, leave me alone.
"I'm not." Aaron said, grinning at me.
"OH MY GOD I FEEL BAD, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO!!" I said as I pulled the box of donuts out of the bag and took a peak inside.
I gasped when I saw them. My little sugary happiness.
"Don't say that, I promised you." Aaron replied.
I smiled happily but then Aaron said that he will be going home.
"Oh hell no, not until you try my freaking awesome oreo donuts." I responded.
Aaron did not have to buy me all of these so I'm not going to rudely let him go home just like that, I still haven't properly thanked him.
"Are you sure? I feel like your parents would get upset if I stay longer." Aaron said, putting his book down on my bed.
"Not at all, mom loves you." I said, making Aaron chuckle.
"I guess I can stay for some time." Aaron replied and I felt excited.
I love spending time with Aaron.
I suggested that we go out in our small backyard and lie down so I asked my mom for some sheets and we laid them out and sat on them.
"Why is it so cold?" I whined.
"Because it's November." Aaron replied.
"I didn't know." I rolled my eyes sarcastically.
I reached over and grabbed my first donut. God, I'm excited.
"I was trying to decrease my food intake and you're not helping." I told Aaron and took the first bite.
This is what heaven feels like.
"You don't need to lose weight." Aaron replied.
"Yes I do.." I muttered, but ironically, still continued eating.
I'm not going to inform anyone about my insecurities right now so before Aaron got the chance to ask, I handed him a donut.
"Do you like it?" Aaron asked me.
"Are you kidding me? I love it, thank you so much." I replied, smiling.
"Stop thanking me, Oreo." Aaron said.
We sit in silence for a while devouring our donuts until I'm finished with my first one.
"God, Sundays are so boring." I said as I rolled my eyes, all of the sudden.
"Next Sunday, you'll be studying miserably for the physics test." Aaron smirked at me, reminding me of the sad news.
"I don't understand how you're happy with that, you're taking the test too!" I exclaimed.
"I know that, and I don't have a problem as much as you do." Aaron shrugged, making me huff.
"So here's the plan." I stated.
"Oh, you have a plan?" Aaron repeated, laughing.
"I will study on my own all week, and then, I'll just ask you a couple of questions on what I didn't get.." I explained, trailing off at the end.
"Deal." Aaron smiled.
"Expect me to be at your house anytime during the week then." I laughed, making Aaron's smile drop.
But he quickly smiled again, "My house?"
"Yes! Aren't you bored of Starbucks and my room, your turn now!" I said, chuckling.
"No, if you want, we can find a free time in school or something." Aaron argued.
"What? No! I look for that free time everyday to breathe in between classes and you want me to study physics!" I said a little dramatically.
"Then you expect me at your house by Friday." Aaron replied.
Why is it always my house?
"Why can't we go to your house though?" I asked, trying to annoy Aaron, I don't really care, if he doesn't want to, my house is fine.
"Why don't you understand, I said it and I'll say it again, my house is a no, get that through your head." Aaron took me by surprise when he raised his voice and stood up.
I stood up as well and got worked up instantly, "Why are you speaking to me like that, what's wrong?"
"Because you refuse to understand something so simple, stop being fucking annoying, for once." Aaron's reply surprised me yet again and this time I'm a little hurt.
"I was fucking joking!" I exclaimed, losing count of the amount of times we cussed in the last minute, "I don't wanna come to your place nor do I need your help anymore."
"Fine then, good for you, well done Ellie." Aaron said, stepping back a little and I gasped.
He just blew this whole thing way out of proportion and over what? This is so stupid, and I'm so confused.
I stayed silent and just glared at Aaron as he looked anywhere but me and crossed his arms.
I wish he would just leave right now but I don't know if I have the guts to tell him that.
I feel like shit now. He just bought me the food that I wanted when he didn't have to and the last thing I wanted to do was upset him.
I never thought I would fight with Aaron, especially over something stupid but he's the one who started screaming a bunch of bullshit, I couldn't help it, I don't exactly have the best temper either.
After two minutes of silence, we calmed down just a little, and I decided to try and be the bigger person.
Which I don't usually do alot but Aaron is different. Aaron is special and I don't know why nor do I care but the thought of him being upset with me hurts a little.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have insisted, it's none of my business." I muttered, staring at my feet.
"No, don't- ugh," Aaron groaned, "don't say that, okay? I shouldn't have gotten angry I just.."
I stayed silent and Aaron dropped back down and put his face between his hands, frustratingly.
I sat down next to him hesitantly.
I know that something is going on in Aaron's life that I don't know about, it doesn't need a genius to figure that out. All these signs, everything that happened, it's pretty obvious.
And I can only assume now that it's something inside his own home.
"I understand." I said quietly.
"No you don't." Aaron replied and I backtracked a little.
But now that I know better, I stayed silent.
"No fuck-" Aaron finally raised his head and I saw his face, "that's not what I meant."
I nodded and Aaron sighed.
"My dad passed away two years ago." Aaron suddenly said, making my eyes widen in shock.
I did not expect that.
"I'm so sorry." I whispered.
"It's okay, and since then, uh.." Aaron seemed at loss for words.
"You really really don't have to, and you're not obligated to tell me anything, screw Physics honestly, I could care less about where we study." I said, trying to form any words that would make it better, but I felt like that's not working.
"No, Oreo, I want to tell you, everyone close to me knows about this." Aaron said and I felt a huge relief when he called me Oreo again.
"I'm close to you?" I asked and Aaron turned his head towards me.
When his eyes found my own, I found that I couldn't look away.
"Ofcourse you are." Aaron stated.
"Okay." I smiled, nodding.
"There's really not much to the story." Aaron started, chuckling bitterly.
"Ever since then, my mom has been drunk almost everyday and I'm the only one left to take care of Mason now, we use the money dad left behind but for the future, I'll have to get a job."
I already don't like where this is going.
"Anyways, Mason is now at my aunt's house, that's the only time I could leave the house, can you believe I have to drop him off at our aunt's house every time I wanna go somewhere because there's no one else to take care of him."
I felt my eyes tearing up at this, I care so much about Aaron and the fact that he's in an age where he should be able to live his life and go out but he has to take care of his little brother is beyond me.
"My aunt is the only person left who cares about us by the way, that's why." Aaron explained.
"Mom on the other hand, is too busy drinking her worries away and sometimes she goes as far as bringing different men home every night even if Mason is there."
I can't believe this. Her husband has just passed away and she's hooking up with different men, in the presence of her two very young kids?
"That's why I don't want you to come, I don't want her to see you because she ruins everything beautiful in my life, and she's gonna ruin this too." Aaron finally said, shaking his head.
"Aaron I-" My voice cracked a little and I fought the tears, "I don't know what to say, I'm so so sorry, I had no idea."
"No Oreo, it's fine, really."
"Do you mind if I ask how your father passed away?" I asked in curiosity.
"No, ofcourse not, it was a car accident." Aaron shook his head.
Everything suddenly started clicking in place, "Is that why you were so afraid about Joey?"
"And it's why Mason told you he hates black, because of the funeral, and why I didn't show up for school one day and everyone refused to tell you, it was my dad's anniversary."
I don't know how to feel about all this information but when I see a tear roll down Aaron's face, everything seemed to crash in that one moment, my heart included.
"Aaron." I whispered, trying to hug him but he fought me off.
"I'm fine, seriously." He tried to smile as he wiped the tear off but failed when another one rolled down.
"Come here." I whispered, gathering him in my arms.
Aaron put his head on my shoulders and started full on crying, hiding his face in my hoodie.
A couple of my tears rolled down as well, but I brushed them off, I don't wanna add onto the situation with my feelings right now.
"I got you, it will be okay." Was all I could whisper when Aaron wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer.
