Chapter 35: Good thing he's a leftie.

*************************************************

"Yeah mom I locked the doors, don't worry." I sigh as I assure my mom for what feels like the tenth time.

"Okay, call your dad when you're finished to bring you home." Mom says.

"I'm sure I can find a ride, I told you not to worry." I say and notice my leg moving up and down in a quick pace. Something most people tend to do unintentionally.

I don't even recall when my leg started moving.

"Call me and tell me who's your ride before you leave the hospital." Mom says firmly as I glance at Aaron and find him completely zoned out.

"Okay mom, goodbye now." I finally say, ending the call.

"Wow, she wouldn't stop going on and on." I shake my head chuckling, trying to lighten up the mood.

"Mm." Aaron nods absentmindedly.

"He's fine Aaron, come on." I say, poking Aaron's arms trying to make him laugh.

"We don't know that." Aaron responds.

"Yes we do," I assure him, "Rose would've mentioned if something was serious."

"Or she wouldn't mention it to not worry us." He says, raising his voice a little now.

"God, Aaron no, where did that come from, he's okay, I'm sure." I reply.

"You don't know shit Ellie, just stop." Aaron's loud voice shocks me and immediately silences me.

I lean back, feeling just a little hurt and very confused. Why would Aaron speak to me that way?

I guess he's angry and worried, so I'm not going to make a big deal of it.

I look outside the window and find that we're nearing the location.

We spend the rest of the car ride in silence, Aaron still looks mad and nervous, and I'm just lost in my own thoughts, also feeling slightly bitter towards what happened but trying to put myself in Aaron's shoes.

I always find excuses for people, so I'm not going to bother making Aaron feel like shit about this, he's not just anyone and I know he didn't mean it.

Five minutes later, We're pulling up infront of the hospital.

Just as we're about to make it inside, Aaron pulls me back and shocks me for the second time today when he says, "I'm scared."

I furrow my eyebrows as my heart hurt a little by how small Aaron's voice sounds.

"Everything is okay, you will see." I comfort Aaron and lean in to hug him.

His big arms wrap around me and I notice how small I am in his arms as I lean my head on his chest and listen to his heartbeat.

I hear Aaron sigh as he softly whispers, "I'm sorry."

"I know, don't apologize. I understand." I respond back and Aaron nods as he pulls back.

"Let's go." I give Aaron a small smile as we head inside and call Rose to know where they are.

After many turns, we find ourselves in front of Joey's room.

What really sent us on edge though, was Laurel crying outside of his room and Nathan comforting her.

"What happened to him?" Aaron says, his voice distant yet again.

My heart's rate picks up before Nathan answers, "Don't worry, besides his broken arm and some bruises, he should be fine."

"Where are his parents?" I ask, concerned.

"He told us just two days ago Ellie," Nathan reminds me, "they had to travel to check up on his sick grandma, but Joey called them and assured them he's okay, and his uncle will come in like an hour to see him."

I can't imagine how scared his parents must be.

Fuck. Broken arm. Poor Joey.

I look at Laurel hesitantly and when she notices she confirms what Nathan said, "He really is fine, I just got really scared, that's all."

I nod as Laurel sniffs, "I'm fine, let's check up on him."

Laurel opens the door and we all walk in to Ethan speaking, "For real though, imagine if you died in the accident, and this is the ghost of you fooling us into thinking you're okay before killing all of us."

"Ethan shut up." I say as I walk over next to Joey who's smiling lightly.

"Joeeeey." I whine as I lean down to give him a hug, making sure not to touch the bruises on his left arm, or his broken right one.

Good thing he's a leftie.

"You scared us, asshole." I mutter and Joey chuckles.

"I'm so glad you're okay, dude." Aaron says behind me and Joey shoots him a smile.

"Wow, I'm so popular." Joey replies smugly as we all laugh.

"I feel like they should know what happened." Rose speaks from across the room but just as she stands up and gets ready to speak, Steve pulls her arm back.

"That won't be necessary, I'm sure they're fine with knowing later." Steve tells Rose as he looks at Laurel who still seems a bit shaken up.

"No, I know Ellie, she wants to know now." Rose states which is very true but I agree it's not the right time.

Steve looks at me pleadingly and I offer him the solution, "Why don't Rose and I bring y'all coffee and talk outside."

"That would be amazing." Ethan grins.

"Let's go." I nod at Rose and she walks out with me.

"Where is the coffee?" Rose asks me as we walk down the corridor.

"I don't know, but we can look for it." I shrug as we make random turns.

"Why would you do that?" Rose shakes her head but I shut her up as I say, "I need to know now, and your boyfriend is being annoying."

"What do you wanna know?" She asks teasingly and I look around to make sure no one is watching as I give her the middle finger.

Rose laughs and then starts explaining. It turns out that Joey had the accident on his way to pick up Laurel, while Rose and Steve where already at the restaurant so they called Laurel who called Joey who didn't respond.

Less than ten minutes later, someone must have picked up Joey's phone from the paramedics and called the most recent number in his contacts, which was Laurel and that's how they find out.

"So you're saying Joey fainted when he hit the car?" I ask as we wait for our coffee to be done.

Yes, we found Tim Hortons on the first floor of the hospital.

"No Ellie, focus!" Rose snaps, "He said he remembers blacking out as he was driving which is why he hit the car in front of him."

"Damn, that's bad." I say as Rose nods.

"I know, the doctor already made him take a blood test, the results should be out tomorrow." Rose explained further.

I sigh, feeling very bad for Joey. What a fucking bad day, instead of going on a date with his girl, he ends up in a hospital bed with a broken arm and a crashed car. How nice.

After spending some more time around Joey, and having everyone yell at me for saying, "See, if I were invited on that date, everything would have gone right.", Steve drives both Rose and I home and on the way there I couldn't help but think about Aaron.

I know I'm dramatic and probably read way too many books but I couldn't help but remember the time Aaron didn't show up for school and everyone refused to tell us why, and connecting that to how scared he was about the accident today.

However, what really caught my attention was finding myself lying in bed, forgetting about the hectic day and Joey sleeping in a hospital, but only thought about how close my lips were to Aaron's earlier during the day.
