âSystem, roll for nerves of steel,â Miles muttered under his breath as the heavy stone doors to the boss room groaned open.
âResult: 9. Nerves of lukewarm pudding achieved.â
âThanks, System. Super encouraging,â Miles deadpanned as he gripped his sleeves like they were the last bit of comfort left in the world.
Hyperion, standing tall and confident as always, barely spared him a glance as he pushed the doors open further. A dark, cavernous space stretched out before them, lit only by eerie blue flames dancing along the walls. In the center of the room, a massive shadow shiftedâguttural growls reverberating off the walls.
âStay back,â Hyperion ordered, his voice firm. âThis boss looks nasty. Youâre just going to get yourself hurt.â
Miles sputtered. âExcuse me? Are you implying Iâd be a burden?â
Hyperion turned, raising an eyebrow. âImplying? No. Iâm stating it.â
âRolling for comebacks,â the System chimed. âResult: 12. âWell, youâre a golden peacock with musclesâ is your best shot.â
Miles ignored that particular piece of System brilliance and instead stepped forward, puffing his chest. âLook, I know Iâm not the picture of heroism here, but I can help. Iâm not just some helpless, fragile flower, okay? Iâll be support!â
Hyperion stared at him as if heâd just declared himself the dungeonâs janitor. âSupport?â
âYes. You fight. Iâll make you fight better. A little luck can go a long way, trust me.â
Hyperion rubbed his temple, clearly exasperated. âMiles, I donât need luck.â
âFamous last words,â Miles muttered, crossing his arms. âYouâre stuck with me, so take what you can get.â
âFine.â Hyperion sighed, defeated. âDo whatever you wantâas long as you remain safe.â He emphasized the last word like Miles was a toddler playing with scissors.
âSafe. Got it. Totally my top priority.â
âRolling for truthfulness,â the System chirped. âResult: 5. Liar, liar, adventurer on fire.â
Miles shot an unseen glare upward. âNot now, System.â
The tension in the air was palpable as the boss finally made its move. A hulking, monstrous figure emerged from the shadowsâa giant amalgamation of stone and dark magic, its massive fists dragging across the ground as it roared.
âThatâs a lot of boss,â Miles muttered. âHyperion, youâre up!â
Hyperion didnât waste any time. He charged forward with the grace of a seasoned warrior, his sword gleaming as he clashed with the monster. The room erupted into chaos: the boss swinging its giant fists like wrecking balls, Hyperion darting in and out with precision strikes.
Miles watched the fight unfold and muttered, âSystem, roll for âhelpful sidekick.ââ
âResult: 16. Youâre not entirely useless today. Congratulations.â
âGood enough,â Miles whispered, focusing on Hyperion. He clasped his hands together. âAlright, letâs boost Mr. Golden Boy here. Rolling for luckâ¦!â
The System paused. âRolling⦠Natural 20. Hyperionâs agility is now off the charts.â
Miles grinned. âYes! Take that, overgrown rock pile!â
At that exact moment, Hyperion dodged an incoming punch with such unnatural ease that even he looked surprised. He slipped through the monsterâs defenses like water, landing a devastating blow that cracked its stone armor.
âWhat theâ¦?â Hyperion muttered, blinking as he avoided yet another attack. âHow am I moving this fast?â
âSupport magic, my dude!â Miles called out, fists pumping. âYouâre welcome!â

Hyperionâs expression flickered between confusion and begrudging amusement, but he didnât stop. With his enhanced movements, the boss barely stood a chance. Every swing it made missed by a hair, while Hyperionâs strikes hit like lightning, chipping away at the monsterâs health.
Within minutesâwhat should have been an hour-long fight for mere mortalsâthe boss let out one last roar before crumbling to the ground, defeated. The room trembled, and a chest appeared in the center with a triumphant ding.
Miles ran toward Hyperion, a proud smile on his face. âSee? Told you I could help!â
Hyperion sheathed his sword, breathing a little harder than usual but otherwise pristine. âThat⦠was unexpected.â
âYeah, well, thatâs me. Unexpected and slightly miraculous.â Miles beamed. âI tried to keep my powers in check, by the way. I didnât want to accidentally turn you into a god or something.â
Hyperionâs expression darkened immediately.
Miles blinked, the smile sliding off his face. ââ¦What?â
Hyperion stepped forward and placed a firm hand on Milesâs shoulder. His eyes, which had been calm and amused moments ago, now burned with intensity.
âMiles.â His voice was low, serious. âNever use your power like that again.â
Miles froze, his brain scrambling to catch up. âW-what? What do you mean? I was justââ
âNever again.â Hyperionâs grip tightened slightly, though not painfully. âIf you value your life, donât do that.â
Milesâs heart dropped to his stomach. He didnât know what scared him moreâHyperionâs words or the look in his eyes.
âSystemâ¦?â he whispered.
âRolling for Hyperionâs intentionsâ¦â The System paused. âResult: 15. He is not angry, but heâs serious. And heâs worried.â
Hyperion must have noticed Milesâs wide-eyed panic because his expression softened slightly. He let go of Milesâs shoulder and stepped back, running a hand through his golden hair. âSorry. I didnât mean to scare you.â
âYou kinda did,â Miles muttered, rubbing his shoulder even though it didnât hurt. âWhatâs the big deal? I helped you win!â
Hyperion sighed deeply, his sharp features shadowed in thought. âThat power of yoursâboosting luck like thatâitâs not natural. Someoneâs going to notice it. And when they do, theyâre going to come for you.â
âCome for me?â Milesâs voice cracked. âWhoâs âtheyâ? What are we talking about here? Monsters? Bandits? Tax collectors?â
Hyperion shot him a dry look. âIâm serious.â
Milesâs mind raced as a chill crept up his spine. Heâd always known his rolls and luck were weirdâborderline impossible, reallyâbut hearing Hyperion treat it like a death sentence was a whole new level of terrifying.
âSystemâ¦â he whispered again. âRoll to see if Hyperionâs messing with me.â
âResult: 18. Hyperion is 100% genuine.â
Miles swallowed hard. âYouâre sure?â
âResult: 19. Yes, Iâm sure. Stop asking.â
He looked up at Hyperion, whose face was still clouded with worry. âYouâre⦠actually worried about me?â
Hyperion nodded. âOf course Iâm worried. That power isnât something you can just wave around without consequences.â
Miles stared at him, dumbfounded. âWait, wait, wait. YouâMr. Golden Warriorâare worried about me? The guy who just tripped on a pebble two hours ago?â
âDonât remind me,â Hyperion muttered, though a ghost of a smile appeared. âYes, Iâm worried about you.â
Miles turned to the System, eyes narrowing. âRoll to double-check Hyperionâs feelings.â
âResult: Natural 20. Hyperion is genuinely worried about you. Maybe stop doubting everything for once?â
Miles nearly fell over. âA Nat 20?!â
Hyperion frowned. âWhy are you yelling?â
âBecause! IâI donât know! Iâm not used to people⦠actually caring?â Miles waved his arms around like an overwhelmed duck. âItâs weird!â
Hyperion pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering something under his breath about âchildren these daysâ before focusing back on Miles. âListen to me. I donât know what you are, or what that power of yours is, but you need to be careful. People disappear because of stuff like this. The wrong people will hunt you down andâ¦â He trailed off, his expression serious again.
Miles hugged himself, suddenly feeling small. âYouâre really not joking.â
âNo.â Hyperion sighed. âI donât want to see you get hurt, Miles.â
Miles blinked, stunned into silence. Hyperion didnât want him to get hurt. Hyperion cared.
âSystem⦠roll to see if Iâve accidentally stumbled into a weird, brotherly friendship.â
âResult: 17. Looks like it, buddy. Youâre doomed to care about this man forever.â
Miles huffed, forcing himself to grin despite the nerves bubbling in his chest. âAlright, alright. I get it. No more flashy rolls unless I absolutely need them.â
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âYou promise?â
ââ¦Rolling for sincerity,â Miles muttered.
âResult: 11. Youâre half sincere. Could go either way.â
Miles grinned awkwardly. âSure!â
Hyperion didnât look convinced, but he let it drop. âCome on. Letâs head back. I think weâve had enough excitement for one day.â
Miles followed after him, still reeling from everything that had just happened. His so-called âpowerâ wasnât just an oddityâit was dangerous. And for the first time, someone actually cared enough to warn him about it.
As they exited the boss room, Miles couldnât help but glance up at the System interface, a thoughtful expression on his face.
âHey, System,â he whispered.
âYes?â
âRoll to see if I can trust Hyperion.â
The System was silent for a beat. Then, âResult: Natural 20. Hyperion has your back.â
Somehow, having someone on his side was more reassuring than Miles expected it to be. He had spent most of his life alone, and even his parents had been people present in his life, but never got too close to him.
Maybe Hyperion can be someone I can call a friend. I should stick with him for now. That way, I wonât have to keep getting into trouble all the time and also not risk getting scammed.
But the only problem was Hyperion himself. He looked like a loner as well.
