The trio of adventurers Hyperion had scared off earlier wasnât having a great time. The leader, still nursing a bruised ego (and several cracked ribs from the golem incident), led his companions deeper into the dungeon in search of easier loot.
âThis is fine,â he insisted, though his voice trembled slightly. âWe donât need those two. We can handle this ourselves.â
The burly woman carrying the chipped axe raised an eyebrow. âCan we, though? Because Iâm pretty sure that shadow thing we ran from earlier is still following us.â
The nervous mage whimpered. âI told you this was a bad idea! I told you we shouldâve stayed back!â
âShut up!â the leader snapped. âWeâll find something valuable and get out. Just... stick together.â
Unfortunately for them, âsticking togetherâ didnât help much when a massive serpent-like creature slithered out of the shadows, its glowing eyes locking onto the group.
âOh, no,â the mage whimpered.
âOh, yes,â the leader whispered, backing away slowly. âRun!â
Miles and Hyperion were just wrapping up a minor skirmish with some rogue skeletons when the trio came crashing into their path, screaming like banshees.
âHelp! Itâs going to eat us!â the leader shrieked, barreling straight into Hyperion and bouncing off like heâd hit a brick wall.
Hyperion blinked. âYou again? Didnât I tell you to leave?â
Miles frowned. âWhat are you guys doing here? Wait, no, let me guess. You didnât listen, you found trouble, and now you want someone else to clean up your mess.â
âRolling for accuracy⦠Result: Natural 20. Nailed it.â
The burly woman huffed, clutching her axe. âThereâs a giant snake monster chasing us! Do you have time for snark right now?â
âAlways,â Miles said, crossing his arms. âItâs my best defense mechanism.â
Before anyone could argue further, the serpent burst into view, its massive body coiling as it let out a deafening hiss. Hyperion sighed, drawing his sword.
âYou three, stay behind me. Miles, try not to trip on anything.â
Miles scowled. âIâll have you know Iâve been very stable for at least ten minutes.â
âRolling for stability⦠Result: 14. Adequate.â
The fight that followed was predictably one-sided. Hyperion moved with blinding speed, slicing through the serpentâs tough scales while Miles darted around, doing his best to stay out of the way.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
âSystem,â Miles whispered, âroll for whether I can actually contribute here.â
âRolling⦠Result: 9. You could provide moral support.â
âMoral support? What am I, a cheerleader?â
Hyperion, overhearing, smirked. âHey, cheerleaders have value too. Now stop talking to yourself and grab that torch. Distract the snake.â
Miles hesitated but did as he was told, waving the torch at the serpentâs face. To his surprise, it actually workedâthe snake recoiled just enough for Hyperion to land a finishing blow, severing its head with one clean strike.
The trio of adventurers stared, wide-eyed.
âThat... was amazing,â the mage whispered.
âThat... was terrifying,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion sheathed his sword and turned to the trio. âYouâre welcome. Now get out of here before you get yourselves killed.â
The leader bristled. âWe donât need your helpââ
Hyperion raised an eyebrow, his expression flat. âReally? Because Iâm pretty sure that thing was about to make you its appetizer.â
The leader mumbled something unintelligible and slunk away, followed closely by his companions.
Miles watched them go, shaking his head. âSome people never learn.â
âSome people canât afford to,â Hyperion said quietly.
Miles glanced at him, confused by the sudden somber tone, but Hyperion quickly waved it off. âCome on. Weâve got a dungeon to finish.â
As they continued deeper into the dungeon, Miles couldnât help but feel a strange sense of camaraderie with his enigmatic companion. For all his flaws and mysteries, Hyperion wasnât so bad.
âWell,â Miles said aloud, âif nothing else, this is definitely the most interesting day Iâve had in a while.â
âRolling for understatement⦠Result: 15. Accurate.â
______
The dungeonâs atmosphere became increasingly tense as the stone walls closed in and the flickering torches cast shadows that danced like malevolent spirits. Miles trudged behind Hyperion, muttering under his breath about how unfair life was when he suddenly heard the sound of footsteps.
âRolling for immediate danger,â the System chimed in. âResult: 10. Youâre moderately annoyed but not endangered. Yet.â
Miles sighed, glancing over his shoulder. Sure enough, the same trio of adventurers they had just saved were trailing them, and not discreetly either. The leaderâs shiny armor clinked with every step, the mage kept tripping over her robes, and the axe-wielding woman was munching loudly on a ration bar.
âTheyâre following us, arenât they?â Miles grumbled.
Hyperion didnât even glance back. âYes.â
âWell, canât you just... I donât know, scare them off again?â
Hyperion shrugged. âWhatâs the point? Theyâre like stray cats. Ignore them long enough, and theyâll either wander off or self-destruct.â
Miles rolled his eyes. âGreat, so weâre babysitting three accidents waiting to happen.â
The trioâs "expertise" became evident almost immediately.
As the group moved deeper into the dungeon, Miles and Hyperion skillfully avoided a pressure plate in the floor. Naturally, the trio stepped on it with the precision of synchronized dancers.
A hail of arrows shot out from the walls, narrowly missing Hyperion and embedding themselves directly into Milesâs path. One arrow grazed his arm, and he yelped.
âWhat the heck?!â Miles shouted, clutching his arm. âWhy is it always me?â
âRolling for probability of this being a coincidence,â the System chimed in. âResult: 3. Itâs definitely not.â
âNot helpful!â Miles snapped.
Hyperion raised an eyebrow, pausing to inspect the injury. âYouâre fine. Itâs just a scratch.â
âThatâs easy for you to say!â Miles whined. âYou donât have a trio of walking disasters behind you setting off every single trap!â
As if on cue, the mage tripped over a loose stone, landing face-first on another trigger. This time, spikes shot up from the floor. Hyperion sidestepped them effortlessly, but Miles wasnât so luckyâhis boot got caught on one, sending him sprawling into a shallow pit.
Hyperion peered down at him. âYou okay?â
Miles glared up at him. âDo I look okay?!â
âRolling for emotional resilience,â the System added helpfully. âResult: 5. Try not to cry.â
Miles groaned.
