Miles sighed. âAlright, maybe I am a little under-leveled.â
Hyperion nodded. âThen we should go back and let someone else handle it.â
âNo way,â Miles said stubbornly. âI found it. Itâs my dungeon.â
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âYour dungeon?â
âWell, metaphorically,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion shrugged. âIf youâre that determined, Iâll go in with you. But donât say I didnât warn you.â
Miles hesitated. âSystem, roll for whether itâs a good idea to enter this dungeon with Hyperion.â
âRolling for tactical synergy⦠Result: 16. Entering with Hyperion improves your survival chances significantly.â
âAlright,â Miles said finally. âBut if you start acting suspicious, Iâm rolling you right out of my life.â
Hyperion smirked. âYou and your mysterious dice.â
As they prepared to enter, a group of three adventurers lingered nearby, overhearing their conversation. The leader, a wiry man with shifty eyes, whispered to his companions.
âDid you hear that? A new dungeon. That kind of discovery could be worth a fortune.â
One of the companions, a burly woman with a chipped axe, frowned. âBut they said itâs high-level.â
âAnd you think theyâll get all the loot for themselves?â the leader hissed. âThat fancy-looking guy will probably handle all the hard stuff. We just have to follow them and swoop in at the right moment.â
The third member, a nervous-looking mage, whispered, âI donât know... What if weâre not strong enough?â
âShut up and follow my lead,â the leader said.
Miles noticed the group loitering and whispered to Hyperion, âWeâre being watched.â
Hyperion glanced over casually. âAmateurs. Donât worry about them.â
âYou sure?â
âPositive. Theyâll either chicken out or get themselves killed before they can cause us any trouble.â
âRolling for encounter likelihood⦠Result: 17. Expect trouble.â
Miles groaned. âYeah, that doesnât sound reassuring.â
The moment they stepped inside, Miles felt a chill run down his spine. The air was damp and cold, and the flickering light from the dungeon crystals cast eerie shadows on the walls.
âSystem, analyze the area,â Miles whispered.
âScanning⦠Hostile entities detected. Probability of ambush: High.â
âFantastic,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion unsheathed a sleek black sword, its blade glowing faintly. âStick close to me. Iâll handle the big stuff. You⦠uh⦠just donât die.â
âWow, inspiring,â Miles said dryly.
This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
As they ventured deeper, the dungeon revealed its dangers. Packs of shadow wolves lunged at them from the darkness, only to be swiftly dispatched by Hyperionâs blade. Miles, armed with a dagger, mostly flailed around in the background, occasionally landing a lucky hit.
âRolling for combat effectiveness⦠Result: 6. Your contribution is minimal.â
âThanks for the vote of confidence,â Miles muttered.
âAre you always this chatty with yourself?â Hyperion asked, slicing through another wolf.
Miles huffed. âMaybe.â
Unbeknownst to the pair, the trio of adventurers had followed them inside. They hung back, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
âThis is perfect,â the leader whispered. âThat guy with the sword is doing all the work. Weâll just let them clear the way and then take the spoils.â
The mage fidgeted nervously. âI still think this is a bad idea.â
âQuiet,â the leader snapped.
Miles glanced over his shoulder, spotting movement in the shadows. âSystem, roll for sneak detection.â
âRolling⦠Result: 15. You sense something off.â
Miles nudged Hyperion. âWeâve got company.â
Hyperion sighed. âI told you not to worry about them.â
âYeah, well, theyâre in here now. What if they mess something up and we all die?â
Hyperion smirked. âThen Iâll just have to save your life. Again.â
Miles rolled his eyes. âYouâre enjoying this way too much.â
The greedy trio made their move as Miles and Hyperion approached a treasure chest guarded by a massive stone golem.
âHey! Step aside!â the leader shouted, brandishing a sword.
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âYou realize that thing is about to pulverize you, right?â
âWeâll handle it,â the leader sneered.
Miles shook his head. âSystem, roll for intelligence. Do they have any?â
âRolling⦠Result: 3. Their intellect is woefully inadequate.â
Hyperion sighed. âYou idiots are going to get yourselves killed.â
âStay out of our way!â the leader barked, charging at the golem.
It took all of three seconds for the golem to swat him into a wall like a fly.
Miles winced. âYeah, saw that coming.â
Hyperion dispatched the golem with a few precise strikes, turning to the remaining adventurers. âLeave. Now.â
They didnât need to be told twice.
Miles smirked. âYou know, for a guy who says heâs here to protect me, youâre awfully good at scaring people off.â
Hyperion grinned. âSometimes, scaring people is the best protection.â
As they continued deeper into the dungeon, Miles couldnât shake the feeling that this adventure was only just beginningâand that Hyperion, for all his charm and power, was still a mystery he hadnât fully unraveled.
______
As Miles and Hyperion ventured deeper into the dungeon, the glowing walls and ominous shadows seemed to close in on them. Hyperion moved with the practiced ease of someone who had done this a thousand times, slicing through packs of monsters like they were made of butter. Miles, on the other hand, flailed around with his dagger, panting as he tried to keep up.
"System," Miles whispered, "roll for usefulness in battle."
"Rolling⦠Result: 4. You are slightly more useful than a rock, but only just."
âWow, thanks for the pep talk,â Miles muttered.
âYouâre mumbling to yourself again,â Hyperion called over his shoulder, cutting down another shadow wolf.
Miles groaned. âItâs either that or acknowledge that Iâm a walking liability right now.â
Hyperion paused, turning to look at him. âWalkingâs generous. Youâve tripped at least three times in the last five minutes.â
âHey! Those roots came out of nowhere!â
âCorrection: The roots were stationary. You walked into them. Twice.â
Miles glared at the air around him. âYouâre supposed to be on my side.â
Hyperion smirked. âLook, most people are liabilities when they travel with me. Donât take it personally. Iâm used to it.â
Miles frowned. âYeah, well, I didnât sign up to be dead weight.â
Hyperion sheathed his sword for a moment and crossed his arms. âListen, kidâ"
âIâm not a kid!â
ââfine, listen, barely-not-a-kid, everyone has their own strengths. Sure, youâre not exactly holding your own in a fight right now, but youâve got potential. And letâs not forget your insane luck. Do you have any idea how many dungeons go undiscovered for years? Youâre like a walking four-leaf clover.â
âMore like a walking disaster,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion shook his head. âYouâve got value, Miles. You might not see it yet, but one day, youâll find the thing youâre great at. And when you do, people will stop underestimating you. Including yourself.â
Miles blinked, caught off guard. âThatâs... surprisingly nice of you to say.â
âDonât get used to it,â Hyperion said with a grin, turning back to the path ahead. âNow, letâs move. Iâm not here to babysit your existential crisis.â
âHyperion is right. Statistically, you will find your niche eventually. Assuming you survive long enough to discover it.â
âWow, you guys really know how to make a guy feel special,â Miles deadpanned, trudging after Hyperion.
