By the time night rolled around, Miles felt claustrophobic. Being around Hyperion all day, dodging his questions, and second-guessing every roll had worn him out. He needed space.
âIâm going out,â Miles announced.
Hyperion looked up from a book he was reading by the fireplace. âOut? At night? Do you need company?â
âNope, just some fresh air. Alone,â Miles said quickly, grabbing his cloak and heading out before Hyperion could protest.
âWarning: Nighttime excursions increase risk of danger. Suggestion: Bring a friend.â
âYeah, no thanks. Iâve had enough of âfriendsâ lately,â Miles muttered under his breath.
The town was eerily quiet at night, the streets lit by flickering lanterns. Miles wandered aimlessly, enjoying the solitude. For the first time in weeks, he didnât feel like someone was watching his every move.
That is, until he found himself at the edge of the town and noticed something unusualâa faint glow in the distance.
âWhatâs that?â he wondered aloud.
âScanning⦠Result: Dungeon detected. You are the first to discover this location.â
Miles froze. âA dungeon? Here?â
âAffirmative. This dungeon is uncharted. First-time clear rewards include substantial loot and rare items.â
Milesâs eyes sparkled for a moment before reality hit him. âNope. Not falling for it. Iâm not going in there alone.â
âRolling for curiosity⦠Result: 15. You are tempted.â
âTemptation isnât a decision, system,â Miles snapped, turning on his heel and heading back toward the inn. âIâm going to sleep, and tomorrow Iâm going to forget this ever happened.â
Back at the inn, Miles tossed and turned in bed. No matter how hard he tried, he couldnât shake the thought of the dungeon.
âWhat if itâs got amazing loot? What if itâs the key to me finally having an edge over everyone whoâs been chasing me?â
âWarning: Entering an uncharted dungeon without preparation is highly risky.â
âYeah, I know. Thatâs why Iâm not going in,â Miles grumbled.
âRolling for willpower⦠Result: 9. Your resolve is weakening.â
Miles groaned. âYouâre the worst.â
âCorrection: Iâm the best. Without me, youâd already be a smear on a dungeon floor.â
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
He sat up in bed, glaring at the dark room. âIâm not going back to that dungeon. I donât care if itâs got mountains of gold or a fountain of eternal youth. Itâs not worth the risk.â
âRolling for self-delusion⦠Result: 14. Youâre moderately convincing.â
Miles flopped back down with a sigh. âI need new hobbies.â
As he stared at the ceiling, he couldnât help but wonder what treasuresâor dangersâawaited in that glowing dungeon.
The next morning, Hyperion gave Miles a curious look as they sat down for breakfast. âYou look like you didnât sleep. Bad dreams?â
âYou could say that,â Miles muttered, poking at his plate of eggs.
âAnything you want to talk about?â Hyperion asked, his tone surprisingly gentle.
Miles shook his head. âNope. Nothing worth mentioning.â
âRolling for honesty⦠Result: 3. Your poker face needs work.â
Hyperion smirked. âYouâre a terrible liar, you know that?â
âThanks for the feedback,â Miles said dryly.
Hyperion leaned forward, his expression serious. âListen, if somethingâs bothering you, you can tell me. I meant what I said about keeping you safe.â
Miles hesitated, glancing at Hyperion and then away. Despite his distrust, a small part of him wanted to believe in the manâs sincerity.
âRolling for trustworthiness⦠Result: 20. Hyperion is reliable.â
Miles sighed. âFine. But if you start acting suspicious, Iâm rolling you right out of my life.â
Hyperion chuckled. âFair enough. But donât worryâIâm not going anywhere.â
Miles nodded, but his mind was already wandering back to the dungeon. As much as he hated to admit it, the lure of adventure was calling. And this time, he wasnât sure heâd be able to resist.
As Miles and Hyperion made their way toward the dungeon, Miles couldnât help but shoot wary glances at his travel companion. Every now and then, Hyperion would hum to himself or make idle comments about the scenery, completely at ease.
Miles, on the other hand, was a bundle of nerves. âSystem, roll for whether I should tell him about the dungeon.â
âRolling for strategic disclosure⦠Result: 12. Marginal success. Sharing the information could have neutral outcomes.â
âGreat, so I might regret it, or I might not. Real helpful,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion glanced over, his brow raised. âYou talking to yourself again?â
âNo,â Miles snapped quickly. âI was, uh, rehearsing.â
âRehearsing what?â
Miles sighed. âFine. Thereâs a dungeon. Outside the city. I stumbled across it last night.â
Hyperion froze mid-step. âA new dungeon? That close to Lumeina City? Do you have any idea how rare that is?â
âRare?â Miles asked, instantly on guard. âLike, âIâm going to kidnap you for your luckâ rare or just âwow, thatâs surprisingâ rare?â
Hyperion chuckled. âRelax, Iâm not plotting anything. Itâs just... unusual. Most adventurers comb these areas thoroughly. Finding a new dungeon near a major city is like finding a diamond in a haystack. Youâre either incredibly lucky or cursed with improbable coincidences.â
âRolling for accuracy⦠Result: 20. Heâs spot on.â
Miles frowned. âWell, thanks for that confidence boost.â
Hyperion smirked. âSo, are we going to check it out?â
âMaybe,â Miles said, crossing his arms. âDepends. Are you going to try to steal the dungeon reward if we do?â
Hyperion looked genuinely offended. âDo I look like the kind of guy whoâd steal a reward from a nervous, jumpy kid?â
âYes.â
âFair enough,â Hyperion admitted with a grin.
When they reached the glowing entrance of the dungeon, Miles couldnât help but feel a mix of pride and dread. Pride because, hey, he did discover it first. Dread because, well, it was a dungeon.
âAnalyzing⦠Dungeon level: High risk. Recommended minimum level: 25. Your level: 12. Suggestion: Turn back.â
âTurn back?â Miles whispered. âI thought you were supposed to encourage adventure.â
âCorrection: Iâm supposed to keep you alive. Entering this dungeon is like bringing a spoon to a dragon fight.â
Hyperion stepped closer, eyeing the dungeon entrance thoughtfully. âYouâre under-leveled for this, arenât you?â
Miles crossed his arms. âWhat makes you say that?â
âThe look on your face. Youâre halfway between âIâm going to conquer this dungeonâ and âIâm going to die in this dungeon.ââ
âRolling for self-awareness⦠Result: 18. Heâs got you pegged.â
