âHonestly, Iâm impressed,â Hyperion said. âMost people give up long before now. But youâ¦â He gave a slow, mocking clap. âYouâve got spirit.â
Miles groaned. âIf I say you win, will you just leave me alone?â
Hyperion shook his head, crouching to meet Milesâs eye level. âNot a chance. But hey, good effort.â He reached out, and before Miles could react, Hyperion grabbed him by the collar and hoisted him up like a misbehaving kitten.
âCapture complete. Probability of escape: 0%. Suggestion: Start negotiating.â
âWow, thanks for the update, Captain Obvious,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âTalking to your imaginary friend? Or just admitting defeat out loud?â
Miles scowled. âLetâs go with option two.â
Once Miles stopped pretending he could escape, Hyperion set him down on a nearby bench. The man towered over him, still looking far too amused for Milesâs liking.
âIâm not here to hurt you,â Hyperion said, holding up his hands in a placating gesture.
âOh yeah? Tell that to my dignity,â Miles shot back.
Hyperion chuckled. âFair. But listen, I want to offer you something: protection.â
Miles blinked. âProtection? From what? The bakerâs wrath for cutting through his shop earlier?â
âNo,â Hyperion said, his voice growing serious. âFrom people who would take advantage of someone like you. And trust me, theyâre out there.â
Miles crossed his arms. âAnd why should I trust you?â
Hyperion smirked. âGood question. Thatâs why Iâm willing to offer you an unbreakable vow.â
Miles tilted his head. âUnbreakable as inâ¦?â
âAs in, if I betray you, Iâll suffer severe consequences. No loopholes, no tricks,â Hyperion explained.
âAlert: Hyperion speaks the truth. The unbreakable vow is exactly what it sounds like.â
Miles squinted. âWhy are you suddenly so helpful, system?â
âBecause if he betrays you, Iâd have to deal with your whining.â
âWow, love you too,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion watched him with a knowing smile. âSo? Whatâs it going to be?â
âFine,â Miles sighed. âBut if this goes sideways, Iâm blaming you.â
âRolling for vow effectivenessâ¦â Result: 20. The vow is airtight. Proceed with confidence.â
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Miles watched as Hyperion made the vow, and a soft glow surrounded him for a brief moment. It was oddly reassuring.
âWell?â Hyperion asked. âSatisfied?â
Miles nodded begrudgingly. âYeah, I guess.â
âGood,â Hyperion said, clapping him on the shoulder. âNow letâs get back to the inn. You look like you could use a decent meal.â
Back at the inn, Miles sat awkwardly across from Hyperion, still unsure how he felt about this newfound alliance.
âSo,â Hyperion began, leaning back in his chair. âYouâve got some incredible luck. Is that your skill, or is it something else?â
Miles stiffened. âWhy do you want to know?â
Hyperion raised his hands. âHey, Iâm just curious. Youâve escaped me more times than anyone else ever has. Thatâs impressive.â
âAlert: Hyperion is probing for information. Suggestion: Be vague.â
Miles cleared his throat. âLetâs just say Iâm good at rolling the dice.â
Hyperion chuckled. âFair enough. I wonât push. But you should know that people like youâpeople with unique abilitiesâare disappearing lately.â
Miles frowned. âDisappearing? Like kidnapped?â
Hyperion nodded. âThereâs an organization called the Collection of Miracles. Theyâre⦠letâs call them collectors. They want people with rare skills, and theyâre not above using force to get what they want.â
âGreat,â Miles muttered. âJust what I neededâanother reason to look over my shoulder.â
Hyperion leaned forward, his expression serious. âThatâs why I offered you protection. Youâre a walking target, and you donât even realize it.â
Miles sighed, rubbing his temples. âWhy does everything in my life have to be so complicated?â
âPerhaps because you insist on rolling for everything, even breakfast choices?â
âOh, shut up.â
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âWho are you talking to?â
âUh⦠no one,â Miles said quickly.
Hyperion smirked. âYouâre a strange one, Miles. But I think weâre going to get along just fine.â
Miles wasnât so sure about that, but for now, he decided to roll with itâpun very much intended.
______
Miles paced back and forth in his room at the inn, arms crossed, his thoughts racing like a runaway cart on a hill.
âAlright, system, one more time: Can I trust Hyperion?â
âRolling for trustworthiness⦠Result: 18. Yes, you can trust him.â
Miles squinted suspiciously at the glowing numbers in his mind. âEighteen, huh? What if youâre just buttering me up so I drop my guard?â
âMy calculations are impartial. Hyperionâs actions so far indicate no immediate threat.â
ââImmediate threatâ isnât exactly comforting. Lancy didnât feel like an âimmediate threatâ until she tried to turn me into her personal power-up buddy,â Miles retorted, flopping onto the bed.
âAre you comparing Hyperion, who has made an unbreakable vow to protect you, to Lancy, who woke up on the wrong side of trust?â
âYeah, well, Iâve learned my lesson. Trust is earned, not rolled for,â Miles grumbled.
âRolling for wisdom⦠Result: 4. Your personal growth is underwhelming.â
Miles grabbed a pillow and hurled it into the air, knowing full well he couldnât actually hit the disembodied voice of his system.
Throughout the day, Miles kept a wary eye on Hyperion. Every interactionâwhether it was Hyperion ordering food, asking about the weather, or simply existingâwas met with Miles internally rolling for trustworthiness.
âHey, Miles, want to grab lunch?â Hyperion asked casually.
Milesâs eyes narrowed. âOne second.â
âRolling for trustworthiness⦠Result: 19. He just wants lunch.â
âAlright, but Iâm watching you,â Miles said, pointing a finger at Hyperion like a detective cornering a suspect.
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âWhat did I even do to deserve this level of suspicion?â
âNothing yet. Thatâs exactly what makes you dangerous,â Miles replied.
By mid-afternoon, Hyperion finally snapped. âOkay, what is it with you? Did I accidentally step on your invisible pet? Insult your favorite food? Why do you look at me like Iâm about to pull out a dagger and stab you?â
Miles shrugged. âJust cautious. You know, burned once, cautious twice.â
âItâs âonce bitten, twice shy,ââ Hyperion corrected.
âWhatever. Point is, Iâm not letting my guard down,â Miles said firmly.
âRolling for stubbornness⦠Result: 20. Congratulations, youâre insufferable.â
Miles ignored the system and continued his day of distrust.
