As Faye shifted restlessly in her bed, the moonlight outside cast shadows across her room. She had been tossing and turning for what felt like hours, unable to shake the uneasy feeling that had taken hold of her heart since her confrontation with Edward. The tension between them still hung in the air, unresolved and heavy. Faye couldn't help but replay their conversation over and over, analyzing every word and gesture. What had she expected? What did she want from him?
She sighed, pushing the covers off her body, and walked over to the window. The cold night air brushed against her skin as she gazed out at the quiet street below, wishing for something, anything, to make the confusion inside her settle.
The door creaked open behind her, and Faye turned to see Edward standing in the doorway. His presence was familiar, but tonight, it felt different. He wasn't the same as he had been beforeâdistant and guarded. Now, he seemed almost uncertain, like he was unsure of his place in her world.
Without a word, he stepped into the room, moving with that effortless grace that always left Faye in awe. He didn't need to speak. She could see it in his eyes: the lingering hurt and the weight of the unspoken things between them.
"Can't sleep?" Faye asked quietly, her voice breaking the silence.
Edward's gaze softened, his lips curving into a small, reassuring smile. "No," he replied, his voice low and almost gentle. "But I'm here now. Is that okay?"
Faye nodded, not trusting herself to speak again. She stepped back from the window, letting him enter fully, and before she knew it, Edward was beside her, sitting at the edge of her bed. He watched her for a moment, his expression filled with a mixture of longing and regret. Faye couldn't help but feel a pang in her chest at the sight. She had hurt him, and she hadn't meant to. But the distance between themâshe couldn't ignore it any longer.
He reached out, his fingers brushing the back of her hand in a tender touch, as if testing the waters. Faye felt the warmth of his touch, even though she knew it wasn't warmth in the traditional sense. It was something deeper, something far more powerful.
"I didn't mean to pull away," Edward said softly, his voice laced with emotion. "But sometimes, it's the only way I can keep you safe."
Faye shook her head, taking his hand in hers. "I don't need you to keep me safe by staying away from me, Edward. I need you to be here, with me."
She met his eyes, and in that moment, she knew he saw the truth in her words. He could see the sincerity in her eyes, the resolve that had taken root deep within her. Faye wasn't going to let him slip away, no matter how much fear and uncertainty plagued him.
Edward didn't respond immediately, but his gaze softened as he leaned back against the pillows. He motioned for Faye to join him, and she did, sitting beside him. They lay side by side, the quietness between them now more comfortable than before.
"You're not going to get rid of me that easily," Faye whispered, breaking the silence again, her words a light tease to ease the tension.
Edward chuckled softly, his fingers tracing patterns on her arm as he settled in beside her. "I wouldn't dream of it," he murmured, his voice quieter now, filled with a calm that Faye hadn't heard from him in days.
For a while, they simply lay together in the stillness, the soft sound of their breathing mingling with the quiet hum of the night. Faye could feel the warmth of Edward's presence beside her, and though he didn't need sleep, she did. The comfort of his closeness soothed the restless churn in her heart, making her feel safe in a way she hadn't in days.
Edward shifted slightly, his hand resting against her cheek. "You're still thinking about everything, aren't you?"
Faye nodded, her eyes closing for a moment as she took a slow breath. "I just... want to understand. I don't want things to feel broken between us."
"I know," Edward murmured, his voice full of understanding. "But we'll figure it out. I promise you, Faye."
Faye turned toward him, her eyes meeting his in the dim light. "Promise me something, Edward."
"What?"
"Promise me that you won't leave. That you won't push me away again," she said, her voice thick with the weight of the emotions she couldn't quite express.
Edward's gaze softened, and he reached out to brush a strand of hair from her face. "I promise," he whispered, his voice filled with quiet conviction.
And with that, Faye felt herself finally relax, the tension from the day starting to ebb away. She let her eyes flutter shut, the sound of Edward's steady presence beside her like a comforting lullaby.
She didn't know what the future would hold for them, but for the first time in days, she felt like everything might just be okay.

In the morning, when Faye woke, she was met with the familiar sight of Edward still sitting beside her. His gaze was soft, but there was a hint of something elseâsomething that made her feel both loved and cherished. He had stayed by her side throughout the night, his presence a quiet but constant reassurance.
Faye smiled, her heart light as she slowly sat up, stretching out the kinks in her body. "I didn't expect you to still be here," she said, half in surprise, half in affection.
Edward smiled back, his fingers gently brushing through her hair. "I promised, didn't I?" he replied.
Faye nodded, happy in a way that was simple and true. "Yeah, you did."
She stood up, stretching once more before excusing herself to brush her teeth and get ready for the day. "I just need a few 'human minutes,'" she said with a small grin, knowing Edward would understand.
When she returned to her room, refreshed and feeling lighter, she found Edward still there, looking at her with a soft, content expression. There was no distance between them nowânot the same kind of distance that had weighed on her in the past few days.
The world felt right again.
As she stepped into the kitchen, she heard Sebastian stir in his room, signaling that the day was starting. Faye moved into action, preparing breakfast for her brother, all the while basking in the calm of the morning. The weight of the night had lifted, and though there were still uncertainties ahead, she knew one thing for sure: she wasn't alone in facing them.
And as she glanced back at Edward, still sitting in the living room, a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. Everything, for the first time in what felt like forever, seemed possible.
