The tension in the room thickened as Faye stood there, facing Edward. The words she had rehearsed in her head felt heavier now that she was standing in front of him. His eyes, dark and unreadable, locked onto hers, and for a brief moment, Faye wondered if he could hear the pounding of her heart.

"Why have you been avoiding me?" Faye repeated, her voice steady despite the tightness in her chest. She was done with silence, done with the guessing. She wasn't going to let this fester any longer.

Edward shifted, his posture tense. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but nothing came out. He looked like he was searching for the right words, but they eluded him.

"I don't want to push you," he finally said, his voice low, as though he were confessing something private. "I don't want to hurt you."

Faye shook her head, not understanding. "Hurt me? Edward, you're already hurting me by pulling away. You're making me feel like I don't matter to you anymore."

Edward winced at her words, his face twisting in pain. "That's not it, Faye. It's... complicated."

"Complicated?" Faye repeated, frustration building in her chest. "What's so complicated? What's so difficult about just being real with me?"

He stepped back slightly, running a hand through his messy hair. His jaw clenched, and Faye could see the conflict brewing within him. She wasn't going to let him hide behind his walls anymore.

"Do you know what it's like for me?" Edward asked, his voice tight. "To want something so badly, but know it's dangerous for you? I can't... I can't risk pulling you closer when I know I could hurt you." He looked at her, his eyes filled with anguish. "I can't be the person you need me to be, Faye. Not when every part of me screams that being close to you is dangerous."

Faye's chest tightened as his words sank in. She understood what he was saying, but it didn't make sense. "Edward, I don't need you to be perfect. I just need you to be here." She took a step closer to him, her voice softening. "I'm not afraid of what you are. I'm not afraid of what could happen between us. I'm not going to let you pull away just because you think you're protecting me."

Edward's gaze faltered for a second, and Faye could see the struggle in his eyes. "But I am protecting you. If I get too close, I might hurt you in ways you can't even understand. I don't want that."

Faye took another step forward, her resolve hardening. "You don't get to decide what I can handle. I'm not some fragile thing you have to protect, Edward. I can handle the truth. I can handle you." She crossed her arms, her gaze unwavering. "You can't just shut me out because of your fears. I deserve better than that."

Edward opened his mouth, then closed it again, frustration clouding his features. "I don't want to hurt you, Faye. I don't want to lose control, and I don't want to be the one who drags you into something you can't handle."

Faye's heart ached at his vulnerability, but she wasn't backing down. "I'm not going anywhere," she said firmly. "I don't care about the danger. I don't care about your fears. I care about us, and I'm not going to let you push me away just because it's easier for you." Her voice softened, but her words still held weight. "I'm not going to let you keep me at arm's length. Not when we've already come this far."

Edward looked at her in silence for a long moment, his eyes dark and conflicted. She could see the pain behind them, the fear that had kept him distant for so long. She could see that he was scared—scared of the unknown, scared of losing control, scared of hurting her.

But Faye wasn't afraid anymore. She wasn't afraid of him, and she wasn't afraid of the truth.

"You don't have to do this alone," Faye said softly, her voice full of understanding. "I'm not asking you to change who you are. I'm just asking you to be with me. No more running, no more hiding."

Edward's lips parted as if to argue, but he stopped himself, the words dying on his tongue. He was wrestling with his own emotions, his own internal battle between the fear of hurting her and the desire to be with her.

Faye stood there, unwavering. She had said what she needed to say. It was up to him now.

A long silence passed between them, the air heavy with everything left unsaid. Then, finally, Edward stepped forward, his expression softening. He reached out, his hand hovering just inches from hers.

"I don't want to lose you, Faye," he whispered. "But I don't know how to make this work. I don't know if I can."

Faye reached for his hand, closing the distance between them. "We'll figure it out together," she said, her voice filled with certainty. "But I can't do this if you're not willing to try. I need you to fight for us. I need you to fight for me."

For a moment, there was nothing but the quiet between them. Edward's hand trembled slightly as he closed the distance, his fingers brushing against hers. His eyes flickered with something—something like hope, like maybe, just maybe, they could make this work.

"I don't know how to be what you need me to be," he said quietly, his voice strained. "But I'll try. I'll try, for you."

Faye's heart skipped a beat, a mix of relief and warmth flooding through her. She had fought for this, fought for them, and now she was starting to see the cracks in his walls.

"That's all I ask," she said softly.

They stood there for a moment, their hands entwined, the weight of everything that had been left unsaid finally starting to lift.

But Faye knew that this wasn't the end. It was just the beginning of a new chapter, one where they would face whatever challenges came their way together.

The silence between them wasn't empty anymore. It was filled with the promise of something more.
