The Metropolitan Stadium buzzed with excitement as the early evening sun began to dip beneath the horizon. The floodlights above cast a stark white glow over the battlefield, cutting through the soft twilight.
"Incredible energy in the stadium tonight!" Freddy's voice carried over the noise of the crowd. "And for good reason â this is a high-stakes match between two very different but equally dangerous trainers."
"That's right!" Don George's gruff tone followed. "Barry's aggressive, high-speed battling style versus Conway's methodical, calculating approach. This one's going to be fascinating."
High up in the stands, Paul sat with his arms crossed, his eyes narrowed as he stared down at the battlefield. His expression was unreadable, but his mind was sharp with scrutiny.
Let's see if Barry actually has what it takes.
Ash, sitting next to Serena, leaned forward slightly. "Come on, Barry... you've got this."
"Yeah!" Dawn's voice was bright with encouragement. "Take it to him!"
"Let's go, Barry!" Misty added with a small grin.
On the battlefield, the two trainers stood ready. Barry, blonde hair already messy from the occasional breeze, wore his signature orange scarf over his blue jacket. He had an intense gleam in his eyes as he stared down his opponent.
Conway, with his neatly parted Black hair and round glasses, adjusted his glasses with a single finger. He smiled faintly, a calm contrast to Barry's fired-up energy.
Referee Steve from Unova raised his arm. "Trainers, to your positions!" His voice was sharp and professional. "This battle will have a thirty-minute timer â fifteen minutes a half. Substitutions are permitted at any time. The battle begins when I blow my whistle."
Referee Steve from Unova
Steve lowered his arm and blew the whistle.
Barry immediately snatched a Poké Ball from his belt. "Empoleon â let's go!"
With a flash of light, Empoleon emerged onto the field, its metallic flippers gleaming in the artificial light. It let out a proud, commanding cry as it spread its sharp wings.
Conway's smile barely wavered as he plucked a Poké Ball from his pocket. "Aggron... you're up."
A fierce roar shook the stadium as Aggron appeared in a burst of light. Its steel armor shone under the stadium lights, and its crimson eyes narrowed dangerously as it slammed a clawed foot into the ground, causing a small tremor.
"That's quite the heavyweight matchup!" Freddy's voice rose. "Empoleon versus Aggron! Who's coming out on top?"
Barry wasted no time. "Empoleon â Hydro Pump!"
Empoleon surged forward, water gathering at its beak before blasting a concentrated stream of water toward Aggron.
Conway remained calm. "Aggron, Protect."
A shimmering green barrier materialized in front of Aggron just as the Hydro Pump hit. The water splashed harmlessly against the shield, droplets scattering through the air.
Barry's teeth clenched. "Fine. Empoleon, Aqua Jet!"
Empoleon's body shimmered blue before it shot forward like a torpedo.
"Aggron, dodge left."
Aggron shifted to the side with surprising speed for its bulky frame, causing Empoleon to barely miss.
Barry's eyes flashed. He's trying to make me burn out...
"Empoleon, don't let up â Metal Claw!"
Empoleon's wings glowed silver as it slashed forward. This time, the strike connected â the metallic impact echoed through the stadium as Empoleon's claws raked across Aggron's armored hide.
Aggron staggered but held its ground.
"Stone Edge."
Aggron slammed its tail into the ground, jagged stones bursting upward in a rapid arc toward Empoleon.
"Aqua Jet â get above it!" Barry shouted.
Empoleon shot upward, narrowly avoiding the pointed stones.
"Conway's calm under pressure," Don George noted. "Barry's putting on the speed, but Conway's not rattled."
Barry's eyes sharpened. "Empoleon â Drill Peck!"
Empoleon spiraled downward, its beak spinning like a drill.
Conway's smile thinned. "Iron Head."
Aggron's head gleamed silver as it charged upward to meet Empoleon head-on. The collision rang out across the stadium â Empoleon was thrown backward, but it flipped midair and landed gracefully on its feet.
Conway adjusted his glasses. "Heavy Slam."
Aggron leaped upward with surprising speed for its size, its massive body casting a shadow over Empoleon.
"Aqua Jet â NOW!" Barry roared.
Empoleon surged upward like a bullet, crashing into Aggron midair. Aggron was thrown back violently, skidding across the battlefield.
It was Conway's first visible reaction of surprise.
Barry grinned. "Empoleon, Surf!"
Empoleon's wings glowed blue as it summoned a massive wave of water. The tidal force rushed toward Aggron.
"Aggron, Protect!" Conway ordered.
The green barrier shimmered into place â but cracks spread through it almost immediately as the Surf tore through.
Conway's eyes flashed with concern.
Barry's expression sharpened. "Empoleon â Ice Beam!"
As the last of the Surf's water scattered through the field, Empoleon fired a gleaming beam of frost. The icy strike hammered Aggron's side, causing it to stumble.
"End it! Drill Peck!"
Empoleon shot forward in a blur of steel and blue light. Its beak struck Aggron square in the chest with a powerful impact. Aggron reeled backward â and hit the ground with a deafening crash.
Referee Steve raised his arm. "Aggron is unable to battle! Empoleon wins!"
Barry pumped his fist. "YES!"
Conway's glasses slid down his nose as he calmly recalled Aggron. "Well played," he murmured, almost to himself.
"What a first half!" Freddy exclaimed. "Barry leads by 1-0! Empoleon delivers the finishing blow right before halftime!"
"Conway's got work to do," Don George added. "Barry's momentum is building â but it's only halftime."
Barry's breath was coming fast, but he grinned confidently as Empoleon stood tall beside him, its steel wings shining under the stadium lights.
"Empoleon's in great form," Dawn said with a proud smile.
Paul's eyes remained sharp, his arms still crossed. That was decent.
â
The buzz of the stadium had dulled slightly as halftime settled over the field. Barry stood with Empoleon near his corner, arms crossed and brow furrowed. Across from him, Conway adjusted his glasses with a small smile, already plotting his next move.
Up in the stands, Paul's expression was flat â though his sharp gaze lingered on Barry's positioning. His arms were crossed tightly over his chest.
"Barry's battle instincts are solid," Paul said coolly, "but his defense is a mess."
Ash glanced over at him. "What do you mean?"
Paul's eyes narrowed slightly. "Empoleon's quick on offense, but Barry's leaving too many openings. Conway's just waiting for the right moment to exploit them."
"Paul's got a point," Gary added from the row behind them. He stretched his arms lazily. "Barry's been so focused on overwhelming Conway with speed, he's not thinking about how to guard himself when Conway counters."
Dawn frowned. "Barry's always been aggressive. It's his style."
Paul's gaze sharpened. "And that's why he's vulnerable."
Just then, Referee Steve walked back onto the field, raising his arm. "Trainers, take your positions!"
Barry's jaw tightened. "We've got this, Empoleon," he muttered.
Empoleon let out a determined cry, its metal flippers glinting under the stadium lights.
Conway stepped forward, his smile thin. "Let's see how well you handle this." He pulled out his next Poké Ball and tossed it into the air. "Dusknoir, come forth."
A chilling wind swept across the field as the ghostly form of Dusknoir materialized. Its single crimson eye gleamed beneath its black and gray body, and an eerie hum filled the air as it floated ominously above the battlefield.
Don George's voice rose with excitement. "Conway's going for control â Dusknoir is a powerhouse when it comes to defensive strategy!"
Freddy followed up immediately. "Barry's Empoleon might have the offensive edge, but how's it going to land a clean hit on something as slippery as Dusknoir?"
Steve blew the whistle. "Battle â begin!"
Barry's eyes lit up. "Empoleon â Aqua Jet!"
Empoleon shot forward like a missile, a gleaming stream of water propelling it toward Dusknoir.
Conway's smile didn't waver. "Shadow Sneak."
Dusknoir melted into the shadows beneath the field just before Empoleon's attack struck. Empoleon skidded to a halt, looking around warily.
"Where'd itâ" Barry began.
Suddenly, Dusknoir's shadow lengthened and sprang upward, reforming into its true shape behind Empoleon.
"NOW!" Conway's voice sharpened.
Dusknoir's large hand shot out, grabbing Empoleon's wing.
"Empoleon â Steel Wing!" Barry shouted.
Empoleon twisted sharply, its wing glowing silver as it slashed upward. Dusknoir released it and floated back â but not before Empoleon clipped its arm, sending a ringing echo through the field.
Conway's eyes narrowed. "Thunder Punch."
Dusknoir's fist crackled with electricity as it surged forward.
"Dodge it!" Barry yelled.
Empoleon leapt aside â but Dusknoir twisted midair, its fist connecting with Empoleon's side. Sparks shot through Empoleon's body, and it skidded backward, gasping.
"Dusknoir's not messing around!" Freddy called.
Barry gritted his teeth. "Fine! Empoleon â Surf!"
Empoleon's flippers glowed blue as a massive wave of water formed beneath it, crashing toward Dusknoir with a deafening roar.
"Will-O-Wisp," Conway said calmly.
Dusknoir's eye glowed sinister purple as orbs of ghostly fire materialized around it. The flames shot forward, cutting through the wave and exploding on impact. Blue and purple light scattered through the field in a haunting display.
Paul's eyes narrowed. "Barry's attacks are too straightforward. Conway's baiting him."
Barry's fists clenched. "Empoleon â Ice Beam!"
Empoleon fired a concentrated beam of frost toward Dusknoir.
"Shadow Ball," Conway countered.
A crackling ball of dark energy formed in Dusknoir's hand. It hurled it forward, colliding with the Ice Beam in midair. The two attacks exploded in a flash of blue and black, and the resulting force sent a shockwave through the stadium.
Empoleon staggered slightly from the blow.
"Empoleon â Aqua Jet!" Barry roared.
Empoleon shot forward, water trailing behind it.
Conway's smile sharpened. "Ice Punch."
Dusknoir's fist glowed with icy blue light as it floated forward. The two Pokémon collided midair. Empoleon's Aqua Jet connected with Dusknoir's chest â but Dusknoir's punch struck Empoleon's side simultaneously.
A harsh burst of frost spread over Empoleon's metallic body as the attack sent it crashing into the ground.
"Empoleon!" Barry shouted.
Empoleon slowly pushed itself up â but ice had started to form along its flippers.
Conway's gaze glinted. "Finish it â Shadow Punch."
Dusknoir's arm extended unnaturally, and a dark aura formed around its fist as it shot toward Empoleon like a spear.
Barry's eyes widened. "Empoleon â get out of there!"
Empoleon tried to move â but the ice on its flippers slowed it just enough.
Dusknoir's Shadow Punch connected with Empoleon's chest in a direct hit. Empoleon's eyes widened â and with a final cry, it collapsed.
Steve raised his arm. "Empoleon is unable to battle! Dusknoir wins!"
Conway's glasses gleamed as he calmly recalled Dusknoir.
Barry's jaw tightened as he returned Empoleon. He took a breath and steadied himself.
Paul's gaze darkened from the stands. "I told you."
Gary leaned back with a smirk. "Well, Barry's tied it up for him."
Dawn's eyes filled with concern. "Barry... come on."
Barry grabbed his next Poké Ball. His hand was steady despite the sweat along his forehead. His eyes were sharp.
"Fine," Barry muttered. "You want a challenge?"
He threw the ball. "Skarmory â let's go!"
With a metallic cry, Skarmory burst onto the field in a flash of white light. Its silver armor gleamed under the stadium lights as it spread its sharp wings.
Freddy's voice rose. "Barry sends out Skarmory! Looks like he's going for a defensive change-up!"
Don George chuckled. "Conway might have the edge now, but Barry's far from done. There's still plenty of time left in this one!"
Barry's eyes glinted as he pointed toward Conway. "You're not getting away with that twice."
Conway's smile barely shifted. "Let's see about that."
Referee Steve's whistle cut through the air again. "Begin!"
The whistle cut through the charged atmosphere as Steve signaled the start of the next round. The tension in the stadium was palpable now â the score was tied at 1-1, and with the clock ticking down, both Barry and Conway knew this next exchange would decide everything.
Barry's eyes were sharp. "Skarmory â Air Slash!"
Skarmory shot upward with a piercing screech, its razor-sharp wings glowing white before it released a blade of compressed air straight at Dusknoir.
Conway's glasses flashed under the stadium lights. "Shadow Sneak."
Dusknoir melted into the shadows beneath its feet. The Air Slash carved through the air and slammed into the stadium wall, leaving a deep gash in the concrete.
"Skarmory's looking aggressive right out the gate!" Don George roared.
Freddy leaned forward. "And Conway's sticking to his strategy â waiting for Barry to make a mistake!"
Barry's eyes narrowed as Dusknoir reappeared behind Skarmory, its single red eye glowing.
"Behind you!" Barry shouted.
Skarmory spun midair â but not before Dusknoir's hand shot forward.
"Thunder Punch!" Conway called.
Electricity surged around Dusknoir's fist as it connected with Skarmory's steel-plated side. Sparks danced across Skarmory's armor as it was knocked backward with a metallic clang.
Barry grit his teeth. "Shake it off, Skarmory!"
Skarmory flapped its wings hard, regaining balance midair. Its eyes narrowed.
Barry's jaw tightened. "Steel Wing â now!"
Skarmory's wings gleamed silver as it dove forward, cutting through the air like a missile.
"Shadow Ball!" Conway said sharply.
Dusknoir formed a ball of crackling black energy and hurled it forward.
Barry's eyes glinted. "Dodge!"
Skarmory tilted to the side at the last second, the Shadow Ball grazing its wing. It twisted midair and slammed into Dusknoir with a crushing Steel Wing.
Dusknoir's eye flashed in pain as it was knocked backward, crashing into the ground with a heavy thud.
"Dusknoir's down!" Freddy yelled.
"Conway's on the back foot now!" Don George bellowed. "Barry's getting more comfortable out there!"
Conway's calm demeanor cracked slightly as Dusknoir floated back to its feet, flickering slightly.
Conway's eyes narrowed. "Will-O-Wisp."
Ghostly blue flames circled around Dusknoir's form before shooting toward Skarmory.
"Agility!" Barry countered.
Skarmory's body flashed silver as it darted through the air, weaving between the flames with blinding speed. It shot behind Dusknoir in the blink of an eye.
Barry's eyes sharpened. "Now â Brave Bird!"
Skarmory's body flared with blue energy as it rocketed forward, wings tucked in tight. It collided with Dusknoir's back with bone-crushing force.
Dusknoir's body shot forward like a meteor, smashing into the ground and skidding to a stop. Smoke and dust kicked up from the impact as Dusknoir's unmoving form lay face down.
Steve raised his arm. "Dusknoir is unable to battle! Skarmory wins!"
The crowd erupted into wild cheers. Barry pumped his fist as Skarmory let out a victorious screech, wings glinting under the stadium lights.
"Skarmory with a monstrous Brave Bird!" Don George roared. "Barry's showing that offensive power and defense are finally coming together!"
Freddy's voice followed quickly. "That's it! Barry wins 2-1 â confirming his spot in the Quarterfinals!"
Conway sighed, adjusting his glasses as he recalled Dusknoir. He glanced toward Barry with a small smirk. "Not bad."
Barry's grin was wide as he recalled Skarmory. "Told you you weren't getting away with that twice!"
Up in the stands, Paul's eyes narrowed slightly â but there was a faint glint of approval beneath the usual indifference.
Ash stood up and grinned. "He actually pulled it off."
Dawn clasped her hands together. "Barry's finally starting to find that balance."
Gary chuckled from behind them. "Guess even Conway's mind games have their limits."
Barry strode off the field, arms crossed over his chest. He glanced up toward the stands and met Paul's gaze.
Paul gave him the smallest of nods.
Barry's grin widened. "See you in the Quarterfinals."
As the stadium began to quiet down and the fans started rising from their seats, Don George's booming voice cut through the noise, echoing across the massive arena.
"Alright, everyone, before you head out, a quick announcement!" Don George's voice was lively, commanding the attention of the dispersing crowd. "Tomorrow, we'll be shifting over to the Fulgurate Stadium for the final two round of 16 battles! And trust me, you're not gonna want to miss these matchups!"
The crowd immediately paused, some fans already turning back toward the field with renewed interest.
"First up," Don George's voice rose with anticipation, "we've got a clash between Vaniville's very own Ash Ketchum and the powerful Astrid! Can Ash keep his winning streak alive, or will Astrid pull off an upset?"
A wave of murmurs passed through the crowd, excitement already brewing at the thought of Ash stepping onto the battlefield tomorrow. Ash, sitting in the stands, straightened slightly at the mention of his name, his expression sharpening with focus.
"And after that," Don George continued, "we've got an absolute blockbuster lined up â a battle between Kalos's rising star Calem and none other than the mysterious powerhouse Tobias! Two of the tournament's biggest threats facing off head-to-head. That's a matchup you won't want to miss!"
Calem, sitting near Ash, narrowed his eyes slightly at the mention of Tobias, his hand clenching at his knee. Across the stands, Paul's sharp gaze darkened slightly at Tobias's name as well.
Freddy took over from Don George, his voice brimming with energy. "That's right, folks! Be there tomorrow at noon sharp for what's guaranteed to be an unforgettable day of battles! Get some rest â you'll need it!"
The crowd roared in response, already buzzing with anticipation. Trainers and spectators began filing out toward the exits, discussing the matchups excitedly. Ash leaned back slightly, his eyes narrowing as the weight of tomorrow's battle settled on him.
Calem shot him a glance. "Ready for tomorrow?"
Ash smirked faintly. "Yeah... I'm ready."
