The next day...
The excitement was palpable as the crowd roared from the stands. The grand Metropolitan Stadium was alive with energy, packed with students, fans, and spectators eagerly awaiting the start of another intense Junior Cup battle. The towering lights above the field illuminated the massive arena, casting a spotlight on the central stage where the next match was about to take place.
Metropolitan Stadium
Don George, standing in the center of the field with his microphone in hand, grinned widely as he addressed the crowd.
"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen!" he boomed, his voice booming through the stadium. "Today, we are down to the final eight trainers, and four of them have already secured their spot in the Quarterfinals!" The crowd erupted in applause as George raised his hand, signaling for silence. "Paul, Montgomery, Trip, and Stephan! Congratulations! But now, we begin today's battle, and it's sure to be an absolute spectacle!"
He paused, building the suspense as the fans cheered.
"Now, let's get ready for our first match of the day!" George continued, a mischievous grin appearing on his face. "Two heavyweights in the arena today â Alain and Remo! Let's see who'll take the upper hand in this fierce battle of strength and strategy!"
The crowd's excitement grew, and Alain stepped confidently onto the battlefield, Charizard by his side, its fiery tail flickering as it let out a low growl. Remo, on the other hand, strolled calmly to the opposite side, his expression focused as he released his Garchomp, the Ground-Dragon Pokémon letting out a menacing roar that sent shivers through the air.
Alain gave a brief nod to his Charizard, and the fiery Pokémon flapped its wings, sending gusts of wind around them. Remo simply smirked and adjusted his cap, eyeing the opponent across the field.
At the edge of the arena, Referee Olivier, a seasoned referee from Sinnoh, raised his hand high to call for attention. His voice was clear and authoritative, echoing across the field.
"Trainers, welcome to your match!" Referee Olivier declared. "The rules are simple â 30-minute timer, with a 15-minute halftime. Substitutions are allowed at any time during the match, so choose your strategy wisely. Let's keep this fair and exciting, gentlemen."
Both Alain and Remo nodded, taking their positions at opposite ends of the field. Charizard stood tall with its wings spread wide, flames dancing from its mouth, while Garchomp flexed its powerful limbs, ready to attack.
"Trainers, are you ready?" Olivier asked.
"Ready," Alain answered with a determined glint in his eyes.
Remo gave a smirk and adjusted his gloves. "Always."
"Then let the battle begin!" Olivier called out, stepping aside as both trainers prepared their Pokémon.
The whistle blew, and the battle erupted into action.
Alain was the first to make his move. "Charizard, use Flamethrower!"
Without hesitation, Charizard opened its mouth wide, sending a massive blast of fire towards Garchomp. The flames licked the air as they barreled down the battlefield, aiming directly for Remo's Pokémon.
"Quick, Garchomp! Use Dig!" Remo commanded, his voice calm yet authoritative. Garchomp sank into the ground in a flash, narrowly dodging the flames.
The crowd gasped as the ground trembled, but the moment Charizard's Flamethrower dissipated, Garchomp shot up from beneath the ground, striking Charizard with a powerful Dig attack, sending the fiery dragon soaring backward.
"Nice move, Remo!" Alain shouted, grinning. "But it's not over yet. Charizard, Air Slash!"
Charizard flapped its wings once more, sending a barrage of razor-sharp winds toward Garchomp. Remo reacted swiftly.
"Counter with Dragon Claw!" he shouted.
Garchomp's claws glowed a brilliant blue as it slashed through the air, meeting the gusts head-on. The collision created a massive burst of wind, causing the dust and debris on the field to scatter. Both Pokémon staggered back slightly, but neither showed any sign of giving up.
"Impressive," Alain muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as he sized up his opponent. "But Charizard's not backing down."
Garchomp growled lowly, undeterred by the onslaught. Remo wiped his brow and adjusted his stance. "This is just getting started."
Referee Olivier watched intently, his gaze sharp. The timer on the scoreboard clicked down, marking the beginning of what was sure to be a grueling battle.
The crowd cheered as Alain and Remo's Pokémon faced off, both trainers showing their skill and determination in every move they made. This battle was shaping up to be a true clash of titans.
"Keep it going, Charizard!" Alain yelled, urging his Pokémon forward.
Garchomp responded with another Dragon Rush, and the air itself seemed to tremble with the force of their attacks. It was clear that neither side was willing to give up.
The heat from the flames and the impact of powerful moves shook the stadium, but as the timer ticked down, Referee Olivier raised his whistle to his lips and blew sharply.
"HALF-TIME!" Olivier called out, his voice echoing through the stadium.
The crowd roared in excitement, their cheers vibrating through the walls of the Metropolitan Stadium. Alain and Remo both took a moment to breathe, their Pokémon standing firm on the field as they caught their breath.
On the sidelines, Don George, ever the showman, raised his arms in the air, a grin on his face as he addressed the audience.
"What an incredible first half, folks!" George shouted, his voice full of excitement. "Remo, showing just how tough he really is! This guy's only loss in the tournament so far was a spectacular 4-0 defeat to Ash Ketchum! But today, he's giving Charizard all it can handle, folks! Will Alain be able to keep up the pressure, or will Remo's Garchomp take control in the second half? Stay tuned!"
The crowd erupted into applause, murmuring with excitement at the prospect of what was to come in the second half.
Meanwhile, up in the stands, Ash, Barry, and their friends gathered together for a brief moment of conversation during the break. Ash, who had been watching the battle intently, turned to Barry with a serious expression.
"Hey, Barry," Ash said, his eyes still on the field. "Are you ready for your match against Conway tonight?"
Barry, normally hyper and full of energy, was unusually calm as he looked back at Ash. He nodded, tapping his fingers against his leg.
"You bet! I'm always ready," Barry said, his usual energy flickering but still noticeable. "But, you know, Conway's no joke. I might not know much about him, but he's smart. He'll catch you off guard if you aren't careful."
Paul, who had overheard their conversation, shot Barry a pointed look. He leaned in, his arms crossed over his chest, his usual stern expression in place.
"Don't get too cocky, Barry," Paul said bluntly. "Just battle the way you always do. Don't let his intelligence mess with your head. He's not going to be any different from any other trainer you've battled."
Barry rolled his eyes but appreciated Paul's advice. "Yeah, yeah. Don't worry, I've got it under control."
Dawn, who had been listening from the side, leaned in with a gentle but firm smile.
"Barry, I agree with Paul," she said. "Conway might be smart, but that doesn't mean you should go in recklessly. Use your speed, use your instinctâdon't rush in without thinking. You'll do great, just keep your head in the game."
Barry scratched the back of his head, looking sheepish for a moment. "Okay, okay. I get it. But hey, I'm not gonna let some guy who thinks too much throw me off!"
Ash grinned, giving Barry a reassuring pat on the back. "Just don't underestimate him, okay? We've all seen what can happen when you take someone lightly."
The group laughed for a moment, the atmosphere lightening as they continued to watch the match unfold below.
Down on the field, the trainers had already begun their brief rest. Charizard flapped its wings, ruffling the feathers of its fiery tail while Remo's Garchomp, though breathing heavily, maintained its intimidating stance.
Referee Olivier stepped between them, raising a hand to signal the beginning of the second half.
"Alright, trainers, back in position," Olivier called, giving them both a nod. "The match resumes in 30 seconds. Make it count!"
As Alain and Remo stood ready to continue, the excitement in the stands reached a new peak, each fan eager to see how this intense battle would unfold.
Barry stood up, his energy returning in full force. "Alright, enough talk!" he said with a grin. "Conway better be ready for the real deal!"
His friends watched him with knowing smiles, all hoping that Barry would remember their advice and stay focused as he prepared for his own big match later that evening.
Referee Olivier raised his hand, the whistle resting between his lips. The stadium quieted in anticipation as Alain and Remo took their positions on opposite sides of the battlefield.
"Second half begins now!" Olivier declared, blowing his whistle sharply.
Charizard roared, flames licking the corners of its mouth as it hovered above the field. Across from it, Garchomp crouched low, its eyes flashing dangerously. The air between them vibrated with tension.
"Charizard, Flamethrower!" Alain's voice cut through the charged atmosphere.
Charizard's mouth opened wide, a torrent of blistering orange flames ripping through the field.
"Dodge and use Dragon Claw!" Remo snapped back without hesitation.
Garchomp shot to the side, the flames grazing the ground just inches from its body. In a single fluid motion, it lunged forward, its claws glowing a fierce green as it slashed upward.
Charizard flinched, but spun midair to regain its balance.
"That Dragon Claw connected!" Freddy exclaimed from the commentator's box. "But Charizard's not done yet!"
"Charizard, Steel Wing!" Alain's tone sharpened.
Charizard's wings shimmered with metallic energy as it whipped around. Garchomp barely managed to raise its arms in defense as Charizard's wing slammed into its side, launching it back several feet across the battlefield.
"Garchomp, Earthquake!"
The ground beneath them began to rumble violently as Garchomp dug its claws into the soil. Shockwaves burst outward, causing the ground to crack beneath Charizard's feet.
"Fly above it!" Alain ordered.
Charizard surged into the air just as the tremors reached it, wings beating furiously as it climbed higher and higher.
Remo's eyes narrowed. "Now, Draco Meteor!"
Garchomp opened its mouth wide, summoning a fiery golden sphere. It shot upward, exploding into countless blazing meteors that rained down toward Charizard.
"Fire Blast, now!" Alain's voice was sharp, commanding.
Charizard inhaled deeply before unleashing a blazing star-shaped blast of fire into the storm of meteors. The two forces collided midair in a fiery detonation that sent sparks and smoke flying through the stadium.
As the smoke began to clear, Charizard hovered in the air, battered but still standing. Garchomp was panting, its legs shaking beneath it.
"Let's finish this," Alain said coolly. His eyes gleamed with intensity. "Charizard, Blast Burn!"
Charizard's entire body glowed crimson as flames gathered around it. With a guttural roar, it released an enormous wave of fiery destruction that shot across the field like a tidal wave.
"Garchomp, counter with Dragon Rush!"
Garchomp leaped forward, its body encased in shimmering blue energy as it surged toward the firestorm.
The two attacks collided with devastating force. A surge of light and fire erupted at the center of the field, forcing everyone in the stadium to shield their eyes.
As the smoke cleared... Garchomp lay motionless on the ground. Charizard hovered above it, wings outstretched triumphantly. The timer had just run out meaning these moves were decisive to see if there would be overtime.
"Garchomp is unable to battle! Charizard wins!" Olivier raised his arm toward Alain's side of the field.
"Alain is the fifth trainer to qualify for the quarterfinals!" Freddy shouted over the roar of the crowd.
Alain lowered his head slightly, offering Charizard a small nod. Charizard let out a low growl, the embers at the edges of its mouth dying down.
"Another commanding performance from Alain!" Don George remarked. "And that means only three spots remain in the quarterfinals!"
Freddy's voice carried over the stadium: "We're not done yet, folks! Later tonight, Barry and Conway will face off right here in Metropolitan Stadium. You won't want to miss it!"
Alain and Charizard stood at the edge of the battlefield as the crowd's cheers swelled. Alain's gaze sharpened. Five down. Three to go.
