The 'Outcast' - First Year3,640 words~19 min read

The sun hung high in the afternoon sky, bathing the Royal Battle Arena in golden light. The chatter of the crowd filled the air as excitement swelled through the massive stadium. The atmosphere remained electric after Paul's dominant victory over Trevor — and now, all eyes turned toward the next matchup.

"Alright, folks!" Don George's voice boomed through the arena speakers. "We're just about ready for our second match of the Junior Cup's Round of 16!"

Freddy's voice followed seamlessly. "That's right! Up next — Montgomery and Sawyer will battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinals!"

In the stands, Barry practically bounced on his seat, his fists clenched tight. His mouth curled into an eager grin. "Alright! Let's go! Let's gooo! This is gonna be epic!"

"Barry, sit down!" Dawn tugged at his arm with a mixture of annoyance and amusement.

"I can't help it!" Barry's eyes were practically glowing. "Sceptile and Hydreigon are gonna tear the place up!"

"I think that's what I'm worried about..." Dawn muttered.

Ash sat a few rows away, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. His gaze was locked on the field, sharp and focused. If he wanted to win this tournament, there was a chance he'd have to face one of these guys eventually. He had to see what they were capable of.

"Let's not waste any more time!" Don George called out. "Please welcome our next two competitors — Sawyer and Montgomery!"

On one side of the battlefield, Sawyer emerged from the tunnel, clutching his notebook close to his chest. His green scarf fluttered behind him as he made his way toward the trainer's box, a quiet but determined expression on his face.

From the opposite tunnel, Montgomery strode out with his head held high. His crimson jacket hung loosely off his broad frame, and his sharp, red eyes glinted with steely confidence. His posture screamed dominance.

The referee stepped between them at the center of the field, raising his arm. "Trainers — you know the rules. Thirty-minute time limit, fifteen minutes per half. The trainer with the most Pokémon standing when the time limit expires wins. Understood?"

Sawyer gave a small, nervous nod. "Understood."

Montgomery's lips curled into a sharp grin. "Let's get this over with."

"Shake hands," the referee instructed.

Sawyer hesitated, but eventually reached out. Montgomery's grip was hard and fast, and he pulled away just as quickly.

The referee backed up, raising his flags. "Take your positions!"

Sawyer slid his notebook into his pocket and reached for a Poké Ball. His hand steadied as he pulled it free from his belt.

"Alright..." He took a calming breath. "Sceptile — I'm counting on you!"

He tossed the Poké Ball, and in a flash of white light, Sceptile materialized on the battlefield. Its tall, lean frame shimmered in the sunlight, and its sharp yellow eyes glinted with fierce resolve. The leafy tail behind it swayed slightly as Sceptile crouched low, ready to spring into action.

Montgomery chuckled, a dangerous glint in his eye. He pulled his own Poké Ball from his belt and held it out lazily. "Alright. Let's put him in his place."

He tossed the ball high into the air. "Hydreigon — crush them!"

An ear-splitting screech filled the stadium as Hydreigon exploded onto the field. Its three heads hissed violently, red eyes glowing beneath the dark curtain of its black wings. It hovered low, its shadow stretching wide beneath it as the tips of its wings nearly touched the ground.

Barry shot up from his seat. "YES! Let's goooo!"

"Barry!" Dawn yanked him back down.

Ash leaned forward, eyes narrowing.

"This is going to be rough for Sawyer..." Freddy's voice echoed through the stadium. "Hydreigon's typing gives it a significant edge over Sceptile — but let's see if Sawyer's got a strategy to overcome that!"

Don George's voice sharpened with excitement. "The referee has given the signal — let the match begin!"

Sawyer's eyes narrowed. "Sceptile — Quick Attack!"

Sceptile shot forward like a blur, closing the distance in an instant. Its legs barely touched the ground as it streaked toward Hydreigon.

Montgomery's eyes sharpened. "Dragon Pulse."

Hydreigon's middle head glowed with deep purple energy before it launched a concentrated pulse of energy toward Sceptile.

Sawyer's eyes flashed. "Dodge it!"

Sceptile veered right at the last second, narrowly avoiding the beam as it burned through the air beside it.

"Sceptile — Leaf Blade!"

Sceptile's forearms shimmered with a vibrant green glow as it lunged, slicing downward toward Hydreigon's side.

Montgomery's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Protect."

A shimmering barrier of white light erupted around Hydreigon, absorbing the Leaf Blade entirely. Sparks of green scattered across the battlefield as Sceptile was thrown back from the force.

Sawyer gritted his teeth.

Montgomery smirked. "Too easy."

"Sceptile — back on your feet!" Sawyer called.

Sceptile crouched low, steadying itself. Its eyes gleamed with fierce determination.

"Not bad," Montgomery admitted, voice low and sharp. "But not good enough."

Hydreigon's three heads hissed menacingly in unison as dark energy began to swirl around it.

Ash's fists tightened in the stands. His jaw set.

"Come on, Sawyer..." he muttered.

"Sceptile — stay calm," Sawyer said, voice steadying. "We've got this."

Montgomery's smile widened. "Let's see about that."

Hydreigon's snarling cry reverberated across the Royal Battle Arena, its three heads glaring menacingly at the nimble figure of Sceptile crouched low across the field. Montgomery's mouth curled into a sharp smile as his Hydreigon's heads twisted, tracking Sceptile's every twitch. Across the field, Sawyer's eyes sharpened behind his glasses, his jaw tight.

"Hydreigon, Dragon Pulse!" Montgomery's voice cut through the air like a blade.

Three beams of concentrated draconic energy spiraled toward Sceptile, crackling with power.

"Sceptile, dodge!" Sawyer's command came instantly.

Sceptile leapt into the air, twisting mid-flight as the Dragon Pulse shattered the ground beneath it. Chunks of debris rained down, but Sceptile landed lightly, its yellow eyes flashing.

"Leaf Storm!" Sawyer shouted.

Sceptile spun, a green tornado of razor-sharp leaves erupting from its tail. The storm spiraled toward Hydreigon, cutting through the air with deadly precision.

Montgomery's eyes narrowed. "Counter it with Dark Pulse!"

Dark, crackling energy exploded from Hydreigon's mouths, colliding with the Leaf Storm in a burst of light and sound. A shockwave blasted across the field, forcing both Pokémon back as the ground beneath them scorched from the impact.

"Coward!" Montgomery's voice was venomous. "Is dodging all you can do?"

Sawyer's eyes flashed dangerously. "I'm playing smart. You wouldn't understand."

Montgomery sneered. "Hiding behind strategy? Pathetic."

"You wouldn't last a minute in a real battle," Sawyer shot back coldly.

"Keep talking," Montgomery hissed. "Let's see how long your precious strategy lasts."

"Hydreigon, Hyper Beam!"

Hydreigon's central mouth began charging a sphere of blinding orange light, the two side heads trembling with contained power.

"Sceptile, Quick Attack!" Sawyer's voice was sharp.

Sceptile shot forward in a blur of green light, zigzagging through the field as the Hyper Beam fired. The beam tore through the arena, a streak of raw destructive energy, but Sceptile blurred past it, narrowly avoiding incineration.

"Slam it!" Sawyer's voice was sharp.

Sceptile flipped midair, its tail glowing silver. It brought the full force of its weight down on Hydreigon's central head.

Hydreigon reeled back with a deep roar, but Montgomery's expression remained calm. "Hydreigon, Bite!"

Hydreigon's side heads lashed out simultaneously, black jaws clamping around Sceptile's tail. Sceptile's eyes widened in pain as it was slammed into the ground.

"Ref!" Sawyer's voice sharpened. "That's illegal!"

The referee raised a warning flag. "Release your hold or you will be disqualified."

Montgomery's lip curled, but he gave a sharp nod. "Hydreigon, release."

Hydreigon tossed Sceptile to the side, the Grass-type rolling across the field before flipping back to its feet, panting.

Don George's voice echoed over the arena. "Tensions are running high here in the second match of the Junior Cup! This is fierce battling!"

"Montgomery's pushing the limits of the rules," Freddy added from the commentary box. "Sawyer's keeping his composure, but for how long?"

Sawyer's eyes narrowed, his chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. "We're not done."

Montgomery's smile sharpened. "Then stop holding back."

The referee checked his watch. He blew the whistle sharply and raised his hand. "Halftime! Both trainers have five minutes to regroup before the match resumes."

Sceptile and Hydreigon glared across the field at each other, neither backing down despite their injuries. Sawyer and Montgomery locked eyes, the tension between them palpable.

Up in the stands, Ash sat forward in his seat, arms crossed, his brow furrowed. "This is intense..."

"Montgomery's brutal," Clemont said from beside him. "Sawyer's handling it well, but..."

Ash's eyes remained sharp. "If Sawyer doesn't adapt... it's over."

From the VIP box, Lysandre's smile widened, his golden eyes gleaming with dark amusement. All eyes were on the battle — exactly where he wanted them.

The referee's whistle blew once more, signaling the resumption of the battle.

Hydreigon hovered in the air, its heads twitching with anticipation. Across the battlefield, Sceptile still wavered on the ground, battered but far from defeated. Sawyer clenched his fists, his eyes focused and determined.

"This isn't over," Sawyer muttered under his breath.

"Sceptile!" he called out. "I know you can do it! Mega Evolve!"

Sawyer's voice rang with urgency and conviction. He held out the Mega Stone, a sharp glow shining in the late afternoon sun. Sceptile's eyes glowed in response, the power surging as the evolution took hold.

Green light engulfed Sceptile, growing brighter, larger, and more intense. Its form twisted and morphed as the Mega Evolution took shape. The Sceptile's once sleek, slender body became more angular, the forest-like tail growing longer and more jagged. Its eyes blazed with determination.

"Sceptile, Mega Evolution!" Sawyer shouted.

Don George's voice boomed through the loudspeakers, filled with excitement. "And here it is! The first Mega Evolution of the match! Sceptile has Mega Evolved! What a stunning transformation!"

Freddy added, "This will surely turn the tide in Sawyer's favor, but will it be enough against the mighty Hydreigon?"

Sawyer's pulse quickened as he watched his newly Mega Evolved Sceptile rise. It was faster, stronger, and with its new power, it felt unstoppable. "Let's do this, Sceptile!"

Hydreigon's three heads snarled menacingly, but Montgomery's face remained calm, his eyes calculating. "Hydreigon, Draco Meteor."

Hydreigon's central mouth opened wide as a glowing sphere of draconic energy formed above its heads. The sky darkened as it launched the deadly barrage of meteors down at the field.

"Sceptile, dodge and strike with Leaf Storm!" Sawyer ordered, his eyes locked on his Pokémon.

Mega Sceptile moved with incredible speed, darting through the falling meteors with ease, weaving and avoiding the blasts. It closed the gap between itself and Hydreigon in a flash, its tail whipping around and launching a furious storm of razor-sharp leaves.

The battlefield seemed to explode in a flurry of motion. Hydreigon was forced to recoil, its massive body dodging some of the sharp leaves, but several of the leaves tore into its dark hide, leaving marks.

"Hydreigon, Dragon Pulse!" Montgomery shouted, his tone sharp and commanding.

Hydreigon unleashed a massive pulse of concentrated draconic energy, but Mega Sceptile was faster than ever. It launched itself into the air with a burst of power, narrowly avoiding the blast. With a growl, Sceptile propelled itself forward and slashed through the air with its Leaf Blade, aiming straight for Hydreigon's vulnerable side.

Just as Sceptile's blade made contact, Hydreigon twisted in the air, countering with a deadly twist of its own. Its lower head snapped at Sceptile, grabbing the Mega Evolution by the tail and swinging it into the ground.

"Sceptile!" Sawyer cried out, his heart racing as his Pokémon struggled to recover.

"Hydreigon, Hyper Beam!" Montgomery shouted without hesitation.

Before Sceptile could react, the central mouth of Hydreigon glowed with a blinding light. The massive Hyper Beam shot forward, crashing into Mega Sceptile with tremendous force. The impact sent shockwaves through the arena as the ground beneath Sceptile buckled from the blast. The light faded, leaving behind a crumpled form of the Mega Evolved Sceptile, struggling to push itself up.

"Sceptile... no..." Sawyer breathed out in disbelief, his eyes wide.

Mega Sceptile staggered to its feet, but its energy was rapidly fading. It couldn't continue much longer.

Freddy's voice was filled with tension. "What an intense battle! Sawyer is giving it everything, but Hydreigon's overwhelming power is proving too much!"

"Sceptile!" Sawyer cried one last time. "You can do it! Leaf Blade, give it everything you have!"

Mega Sceptile lunged forward, its glowing blades ready to strike. But Hydreigon, with a low growl, countered with a swift and crushing Body Slam, sending Sceptile crashing to the ground, unable to get back up.

"Hydreigon, finish this with another Dragon Pulse!" Montgomery commanded coldly.

Hydreigon's mouth glowed again as it fired the spiraling beam of energy straight into Mega Sceptile. The impact was the final blow. Sceptile hit the ground, unable to rise.

"That's it!" Don George shouted, his voice filled with awe. "Hydreigon takes down Mega Sceptile!

Sawyer gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. Sceptile returned to its original form as Sawyer recalled it into its Poke ball. "This isn't over, Salamence! Let's finish this!"

The ball in Sawyer's hand snapped open with a flash of light, sending Salamence soaring into the air. Its wings beat powerfully, and the dragon roared as it took to the sky, glaring down at Hydreigon.

"Salamence, let's go!" Sawyer called out with renewed determination.

Don George's voice rang through the arena, his excitement contagious. "And here we go! A fierce battle between two fearsome dragons! Salamence versus Hydreigon! Both Pokémon are veterans of many battles, and this one is sure to be just as explosive!"

The crowd fell silent in anticipation.

Montgomery, standing resolute on the battlefield, raised his arm. "Hydreigon, prepare yourself. Let's end this quickly."

Hydreigon's heads lowered, its eyes narrowing, preparing for the final clash. It hovered in mid-air, waiting for Montgomery's command.

The referee, standing nearby, checked his watch. "Remember, the time limit is fast approaching. The winner will be the last Pokémon standing when the time expires."

The battle commenced with an explosion of movement as Salamence shot toward Hydreigon, wings cutting through the air. "Salamence, Draco Meteor!" Sawyer shouted.

Salamence unleashed a barrage of glowing, fiery meteors, aiming directly for Hydreigon. The meteors rained down on Hydreigon with incredible force, the explosions shaking the arena.

But Hydreigon was quick. "Hydreigon, dodge and counter with Dragon Pulse!" Montgomery barked.

Hydreigon darted through the air, evading the meteors with a sharp, almost fluid motion. It unleashed a burst of powerful energy from its central mouth, a spiraling beam of destructive force that shot straight toward Salamence.

"Salamence, dodge!" Sawyer shouted desperately.

Salamence veered to the side, narrowly avoiding the beam, but the shockwave from the Dragon Pulse sent it spiraling downward, struggling to regain control.

"Hydreigon, now! Hyper Beam!" Montgomery commanded, voice calm but firm.

Hydreigon's three heads opened wide, and a blinding light emanated from its central mouth, charging up for the devastating move. Salamence's wings flapped furiously as it tried to fly back up into the sky, but the Hyper Beam was faster.

"Salamence, no!" Sawyer cried out.

With a flash of energy, the Hyper Beam collided with Salamence mid-air. The impact sent Salamence crashing to the ground, causing a cloud of dust to explode around the area. The roar of the crowd echoed through the arena as the dust settled.

Sawyer's heart skipped a beat as he watched his Pokémon struggle to stand. Salamence tried to lift its head, but it wavered before collapsing to the ground, defeated.

"Salamence!" Sawyer shouted, panic in his voice.

The referee raised his flag, signaling the end of the match. "Time's up! Hydreigon remains standing, and Montgomery has won this round!"

The final whistle blew, ending the heated battle.

Don George's voice rang out across the stadium. "And with that, Montgomery is the winner of this intense battle! The time limit has expired, and Hydreigon's superiority has earned Montgomery a 1-0 victory over Sawyer!"

Freddy added, "An intense battle from both sides, but Montgomery's Hydreigon has proven to be too much for Sawyer. What an amazing showdown!"

Sawyer recalled Salamence with a heavy heart, his shoulders slumping as he watched Montgomery's Hydreigon hover triumphantly in the air. Montgomery stepped forward, victorious, his face calm and resolute.

"Great job, Hydreigon," Montgomery said quietly, stroking his Pokémon's back.

The referee called the final result. "The winner of this match is Montgomery, who advances to the Quarterfinals!"

As the announcers continued their commentary, the crowd cheered for the victor. But for Sawyer, the battle was over. He had given everything he had, but it still wasn't enough.

"That was one of the most intense battles I've ever seen!" Freddy exclaimed, his voice still buzzing with excitement. "Both trainers gave it everything they had!"

The applause was deafening as Montgomery and Sawyer walked toward each other, offering a nod of respect. The fans shouted, clapping even harder, as they recognized the effort and spirit both trainers had shown in the arena.

In the stands, Ash watched intently, his arms crossed as he gave a slight nod of approval. He respected both trainers' abilities, but now his focus was on what came next.

Gary, sitting next to him, smirked. "I guess even you can be impressed sometimes, huh?"

Ash glanced over at Gary, shrugging. "Yeah, it was a good match. But the real battle's still coming up."

Barry, on the other hand, was practically jumping out of his seat, bouncing around in excitement. "Did you see that?! That was AMAZING! I can't believe how close it got, and then Hydreigon pulled through like that! Ooooh, I'm so pumped for the next match!"

Dawn, trying her best to keep Barry in check, smiled, though her voice carried a hint of exasperation. "Barry, please, calm down. You're going to give everyone in the row behind us a heart attack!"

Gary chuckled and leaned back, grinning. "Let him have his moment. That was some battle. If he doesn't calm down after that, he never will."

Ash's gaze turned back to the battlefield, where Montgomery had raised his arm in victory. The crowd's cheers were still ringing in his ears, but a part of him was already thinking ahead to the upcoming matches. The Quarterfinals would be even tougher, and he knew he had to be prepared for what was coming.

With Paul's name looming over the upcoming round, the excitement in the air only intensified. The crowd's applause faded into a hum of anticipation for the next match, and Ash, along with everyone else, was ready for what was sure to be another electrifying battle.

Freddy's voice continued to buzz through the speakers. "And so, Montgomery will face Paul in the Quarterfinals! What a match that's going to be, folks. Stay tuned as we gear up for more epic battles in the Junior Cup!"

As the cheers from the crowd began to settle, Don George's voice boomed over the stadium's speakers, drawing the attention of every fan still buzzing from the intense battle.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Don George called out, his voice full of enthusiasm. "What an incredible display of skill and determination we've seen here today! With that, we've come to the end of the day's Round of 16 matches. Let's give one more round of applause to both Montgomery and Sawyer for their epic clash!"

The crowd erupted into applause once again, cheers filling the air. Montgomery, still catching his breath, waved to the audience as he made his way off the battlefield. Sawyer, though disappointed, nodded respectfully at the crowd.

Don George continued, his tone shifting slightly as he spoke into the microphone, "But don't worry folks, we're not done yet! Six more thrilling matches await us in the coming days. Tomorrow, we kick off with the match between Trip and Cameron. And then, we'll follow it up with a high-energy showdown between Tierno and Stephan!"

A mix of murmurs and excitement rippled through the crowd at the mention of tomorrow's matchups. Ash, now sitting with his arms crossed, leaned forward, his eyes narrowing slightly in thought. He was eager to see how the remaining battles would unfold.

Barry, sitting beside Ash, grinned wildly. "Tomorrow's gonna be awesome! Trip's gonna be all serious, and Cameron's just... Cameron! Haha! This is going to be epic!"

Dawn laughed, shaking her head. "You're really excited, huh? I hope you can calm down long enough to actually watch the battles."

Gary, leaning back and crossing his arms, smirked. "I doubt Barry can sit still for too long, especially with those two in the ring."

Ash nodded but was clearly deep in thought. Trip... Cameron... Tierno... Stephan... He knew that any of them could bring unexpected moves, and it wouldn't be long before he'd be facing them, too. His hand subconsciously tightened into a fist as the weight of the tournament's progress settled in.

"Now, let's all make sure to get a good rest tonight," Don George continued, his tone carrying an air of excitement for what was to come. "Because tomorrow, the competition will be just as fierce as we've seen today! Be sure to join us bright and early for another round of electrifying battles!"

The crowd cheered once more, their excitement never waning as they looked forward to the next day's action.

As the stands began to slowly empty, Ash's focus remained on the arena. He couldn't help but feel the anticipation building up for his own turn in the tournament. Tomorrow... it's just one more step closer to the top.

With that, the fans began to trickle out, their voices carrying the hum of excitement that would last through the night and into the next day's matchups.
