The golden glow of the setting sun casts long shadows across the plaza in Lumiose City. The soft hum of city life echoes in the background as pedestrians pass by, and the faint glimmer of Prism Tower's lights begins to flicker in the distance.
Ash's footsteps echoed against the cobblestone path as he spotted Cilan, Chili, and Cress seated at an outdoor table near a sleek coffee shop. They were casually dressed, but their expressions betrayed the tension beneath their relaxed exteriors. Three cups of steaming coffee sat on the table, untouched.
Cilan's eyes narrowed as he leaned forward, his voice sharp with irritation. "I still don't understand how you missed it, Cress. The FBI were right there. Sticking their noses into everything."
Cress, calm as always, stirred his coffee with a silver spoon, watching the small whirlpool form in his cup. His icy blue eyes flicked toward Cilan without emotion. "They're the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cilan. They're not exactly amateurs. Do you honestly think it would be that easy to track them down?"
Chili leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. His bright red hair caught the last rays of sunlight. "Yeah, I mean, they basically specialize in covering their tracks. Even if we knew exactly what they were looking for, there's no way they'd let us get close."
Cilan shook his head, exasperated. "That's the problem, though! If they're investigating Team Rocket's activities, then that means they know more than we do. And if they know more than we do, that means we're already too far behind."
Ash approached the table, hesitating for a moment before stepping closer. "So... what exactly is going on?"
All three brothers turned toward him. Cilan's gaze softened slightly, but there was a distinct edge in his green eyes. "Sit down, Ash. There's... a lot to explain."
Ash slid into the empty chair across from Cilan. His hands gripped the edge of the table as the seriousness in the air settled over him like a heavy fog.
Cilan leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table. His voice dropped slightly, low and measured. "The disturbances in Kalos... they're getting worse."
Ash's brows furrowed. "Disturbances?"
Cilan nodded. "Unusual weather patterns. Pokémon behaving strangelyârestlessness, aggression. Sightings of rare Pokémon in areas where they shouldn't even exist. And it's not just isolated incidents anymoreâit's happening across Kalos. And it's escalating."
Chili frowned, his arms tightening across his chest. "Last week, there was a powerful storm near Anistar Cityâthe kind of storm you only see when something unnatural is involved."
Cress's expression darkened. "And then there's Geosenge Town. Seismic activity. Strange energy readings. We've been tracking the patterns, and it's all converging toward one point."
Ash's stomach tightened. "What are you saying?"
Cilan's gaze sharpened. "We think... that Xerneas and Yveltal are starting to stir."
Ash's eyes widened. "Xerneas and Yveltal?"
"The life and destruction Pokémon," Cress added coolly. "Two of the most powerful legendary Pokémon in existence. If they awaken at the same time, the balance of nature will tipâand Kalos will feel the consequences."
Ash's heart thudded in his chest. "Why now?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Cilan said darkly. "But one thing is certainâthis isn't natural. Someone is behind this."
"And," Chili added, his tone sharpening, "we have reason to believe it's connected to Lysandre Labs."
Ash's fists tightened at the mention of the name. Lysandre Labsâthe powerful corporation funding the Junior Cup. The same corporation with reach into almost every sector of Kalos.
Ash's gaze sharpened as the name Lysandre hung in the air like a dark cloud. His hands curled into fists beneath the table. "Lysandre Labs... You think they're involved in this?"
Cilan's green eyes gleamed under the dim light. "No," he said flatly. "I know they're involved."
Chili's fists tightened on the table. "He's not wrong. This goes deeper than any of us thought."
Ash's brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Cilan leaned forward, lowering his voice, his tone sharp and precise. "Lysandre isn't just some businessman funding the Junior Cup. He's far more dangerous than that. Over the past year, Chili, Cress, and I have been tracking suspicious movements around Kalos â financial transactions, unusual equipment shipments, the hiring of certain... questionable individuals."
Cress's icy blue eyes narrowed. "And the trail leads directly to Lysandre Labs."
Ash's jaw tightened. "So... Lysandre's trying to wake up Xerneas and Yveltal?"
"We believe so," Cilan replied coldly. "But it's not about simply awakening them. Lysandre has always had a twisted ideology â one that revolves around creating a 'perfect world.' A world without conflict. Without suffering."
Chili scoffed. "Sounds pretty noble until you realize how he intends to accomplish it."
Ash's gaze darkened. "How?"
Cilan's eyes sharpened dangerously. "Through control."
Cress's tone was as steady as ice. "Xerneas represents life, and Yveltal represents destruction. Lysandre wants to awaken them â not to worship or protect them â but to bend them to his will. If he controls the forces of life and destruction, he controls the very foundation of Kalos itself."
Ash's heart pounded in his chest. "Why would he want that?"
Cilan's gaze darkened. "Because to him... humanity is flawed. Conflict, greed, war â Lysandre believes it all stems from human imperfection. He thinks if he can 'reset' the balance of the world, he can eliminate those flaws entirely."
Ash's eyes widened. "You're saying he wants toâ"
"Recreate the world," Cilan interrupted. "In his own vision. A purified version of Kalos, built on the ashes of the old one."
Chili leaned forward, his fists pressed into the table. "And if he succeeds... there's no telling what will be left standing."
Ash's fists trembled. "How long have you known about this?"
"A while," Cilan admitted darkly. "But it's only recently that the pieces started fitting together. The disturbances in Kalos. The increased Pokémon activity. The sudden seismic shifts. Lysandre is setting something in motion â and we're running out of time to stop him."
Ash's jaw tightened. "And the Junior Cup?"
"That's the part we haven't fully figured out," Cress admitted. "But it's not a coincidence that Lysandre Labs is heavily involved with the Cup's funding. Trainers from all over the world gathered in one place â the perfect cover for something much bigger."
Cilan's gaze sharpened. "This isn't about money or status. Lysandre is after something hidden beneath Kalos â something connected to Xerneas and Yveltal."
"And if we don't stop him," Chili added grimly, "the world as we know it could collapse."
Ash's gaze hardened, his heart pounding against his chest. "Then we need stop him."
Cilan's expression softened slightly. "We will. But we can't rush in blind. That's why we called you here, Ash."
Ash's eyes narrowed. "Why me?"
Cilan's gaze sharpened. "Because you're different, Ash. You're unpredictable â and that's exactly the kind of strength we'll need against someone like Lysandre."
Chili smirked. "Besides, you're the one who's gonna win the Junior Cup, right?"
Ash's eyes flashed with determination. "Yeah... I am."
Cress's gaze darkened. "Then keep winning. Stay in the tournament. If Lysandre is planning something during the Cup, you'll be the closest one to the source."
Ash nodded firmly. "Understood."
Cilan's expression softened into a small smile. "Good. Then let's get to work."
Ash's gaze widened as realization struck him like a bolt of lightning. His stomach twisted painfully.
Lysandre... Lysandre Labs...
His eyes darkened.
His breath quickened. His thoughts spiraled.
It made perfect sense. Lysandre â the man overseeing the very school Ash and his friends attended. The one who smiled with perfect charm during assemblies. The one who spoke about growth and strength with a sense of calculated authority.
Ash's chest tightened.
Every speech Lysandre gave â about strength, perfection, controlling one's destiny â it all echoed with the same twisted ideals Cilan had just explained.
His hands curled into trembling fists. His mind raced.
He's been right there this whole time.
He pictured the school hallways â students laughing, training, sharing lunches, dreaming about the future. The whole time, they had been walking under the careful eye of a man who wanted to reset the world.
His jaw tightened. His eyes burned with disbelief and anger. All those students... they've been walking around right next to him this whole time.
â
The flickering city lights below created a mosaic of orange and blue as Cilan, Chili, and Cress led Ash through the winding streets toward the hills above the city.
Finally, they reached the gated neighborhood. Sleek black iron gates slid open automatically as Cilan approached. The house came into view, and even though Ash had been there once before, the size of it still amazed him.
The house was a sleek modern design â two floors with massive glass windows reflecting the colors of the evening sky. A garage sat off to the side, connected to a private driveway. Beyond the back of the house, Ash could spot an infinity pool stretching toward the cliffside, the shimmering water seemingly melting into the horizon. Next to it was a Jacuzzi tucked into the stone deck. The place screamed money and power.
Cilan led the way through the entrance. The double doors opened into a wide marble-floored foyer. The ceilings were high, and a spiral staircase wound its way up to the second floor. The whole house smelled faintly of citrus and fresh linen.
Cilan removed his coat and tossed it on a nearby chair. Chili kicked off his shoes near the entrance. Cress adjusted his collar as he walked toward the main room.
Ash remained standing in the foyer, taking it all in. "Still as fancy as ever," he muttered.
Cilan gave a faint smile. "We try to keep it modest."
"Yeah," Chili scoffed. "Super modest."
Cress shot him a sharp look before sitting down on a leather couch positioned in front of a glass coffee table. Cilan pulled out a tablet and slid it across the table toward his brother.
"We need to confirm more details about Lysandre." Cilan's tone was all business now. "I want to know everything â where he lives, his family history, any connections we're missing."
Ash sat down across from Cress as Cilan leaned over the back of the couch. Chili, arms crossed, stood off to the side, his brows furrowed.
Cress's fingers glided over the screen as he scrolled through the digital phone directory. "Lysandre Labs... Lysandre Holdings... Lysandre Estate..." Cress's eyes sharpened. "Here we go."
The screen displayed a digital profile. A professional headshot of Lysandre filled the left side of the screen â his piercing blue eyes staring coldly into the camera, framed by his iconic flowing orange hair. His name was listed in bold letters beneath the image.
Lysandre. CEO of Lysandre Labs. Principal of Sycamore High.
Ash's fists tightened as he stared at the image.
Cress clicked into the next tab. "Born in Lumiose City. Raised by a single mother â father was never in the picture. Excelled in academics and business from a young age. Took over Lysandre Labs at 24 after the sudden retirement of the previous CEO."
Cilan leaned closer. "Anything suspicious?"
Cress's eyes narrowed. "Official reports list his business as an independent research and development firm focused on Pokémon health and environmental sustainability. But..." Cress's finger hovered over the screen. "There's a list of financial backers here. One of them is an unnamed private fund. The transaction records are encrypted."
Cilan's jaw tightened. "Shady money. Figures."
Ash leaned forward, his eyes burning into the image of Lysandre. "What about his personal life? Anything weird?"
Cress clicked another tab. "Unmarried. No children. But he's listed as a patron for several elite organizations around Kalos." He scrolled further. "Has a private estate in Kalos's countryside. Heavy security around the perimeter. Only accessible by invitation."
"And nobody finds that odd?" Chili's tone sharpened.
"They wouldn't if he's paying the right people," Cilan muttered.
Ash's gaze hardened. "What about his connection to Team Rocket?"
Cress's fingers glided across the screen. "Nothing concrete. But..." His eyes sharpened. "Lysandre Labs has had several undisclosed shipments to Kanto and Unova in the last two years. Locations linked to previous Team Rocket operations."
Cilan's expression darkened. "So, he's helping them under the table."
"Or worse," Cress added.
Ash's eyes remained fixed on Lysandre's face. A cold chill crept down his spine.
Cilan's gaze turned sharp. "Whatever he's planning... it's bigger than Team Rocket."
Ash's fists curled on his lap. "We need to stop him."
Cilan's eyes met his. "We will."
Ash's jaw tightened. His heart pounded harder in his chest. This wasn't just about Pokémon battles anymore. This was bigger.
Much bigger.
Cress's finger hovered over the next tab before clicking it. The screen shifted to a detailed profile sheet, listing personal details about Lysandre.
Cress's eyes sharpened as he read aloud. "Lysandre. Age 30... Height: 6'7"... Weight: 212 pounds."
Ash's eyes widened. "Six foot seven?!"
"Yeah..." Chili whistled low. "No wonder he looks so intimidating."
"Intimidating?" Cilan's gaze darkened. "More like dangerous."
Ash's gaze lingered on the picture. Lysandre's sharp facial structure, the calculating eyes, the way his hair seemed to frame his face perfectly â it all added to the feeling that Lysandre had designed every part of himself to appear commanding.
"That's not just a tall man," Cilan said coldly. "That's a man who knows how to control a room the second he walks into it."
Ash's brow furrowed as he leaned over the back of the couch, eyes still fixed on Lysandre's profile. "Wait... how exactly are you able to pull up all this information?"
Cress's gaze didn't waver. His slender fingers swiped across the tablet, closing Lysandre's file with a smooth flick of his wrist. "We have access to anyone's personal information at any time."
Ash's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean by anyone?"
Cress's lips curled faintly. He tapped the screen a few times before sliding the tablet toward Ash. A new profile flashed onto the screen.
Alder
Unova Region Champion
Age: 45
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 184 lbs
A photo of Alder appeared on the left side of the screen â his trademark wild red hair and relaxed expression clear as day. The rest of the profile listed detailed stats: known Pokémon, battle records, even medical information.
Ash's eyes widened. "That's... Alder!"
"Yes," Cress said calmly. "Champion of the Unova region. Retired from official League matches for several years now, but still recognized as one of the most skilled trainers alive."
Ash's gaze snapped toward Cress. "How... How are you able to see this?"
Cress's tone remained as even and detached as ever. "Our agency's network is highly sophisticated. We've established systems to access not just public databases, but private records as well. Personal details. Training schedules. Family connections."
Chili chuckled darkly from the side. "If they exist in the system, we can find them."
Ash's mouth tightened. "You mean... the government knows this much about everyone?"
"Not everyone," Cilan said. His tone was sharper. "Only the people worth watching."
As the evening sun set behind the rolling hills of Lumiose, Cilan stood up from the couch, his expression serious and determined. He glanced at Ash, who had been deep in thought ever since they'd discussed the details of Lysandre's involvement in the situation.
"Come on, Ash," Cilan said, his voice firm but reassuring. "It's time to head home."
Ash stood up, his mind still reeling from everything he'd learned in the last few hours. He nodded silently, following Cilan as the three of them made their way to the door.
Cilan turned to Ash just as they stepped outside. The cool breeze of Lumiose evening air ruffled his hair slightly. He looked at Ash with a sense of resolve in his eyes. "Listen, Ash," he began, his voice low. "I know everything's been a lot to handle, especially now that Lysandre's intentions have become clearer. But know this â we'll protect you, no matter what."
Ash looked at Cilan, his expression reflecting both gratitude and confusion. "You mean... from Lysandre?"
"Yes," Cilan replied, his gaze unwavering. "And from Team Rocket too. We're in this together, and we'll figure out how to stop both of them."
Ash let out a slow breath, absorbing the gravity of Cilan's words. He was grateful for the support, but at the same time, the weight of the situation was beginning to sink in. "Thanks... But, what now? What am I supposed to do?"
"First," Cilan said, placing a hand on Ash's shoulder, "you need to keep an eye on Lysandre. Now that you know the truth about his plans, you're in a better position to stop him before he takes any more action."
Ash hesitated for a moment before nodding. "I'll keep watching him... but this is getting out of hand."
Cilan chuckled softly, his eyes softening. "Yeah, it certainly is a mess. But you're not alone in this, Ash. You have friends, and you have us. We'll make sure you're safe."
"Thanks, Cilan," Ash said quietly, grateful for his mentor's unwavering support. "I don't know where I'd be without you guys."
"You don't have to worry about that," Cilan said, his voice full of confidence. "You're stronger than you think, Ash. But right now, it's time to take things one step at a time."
Ash couldn't shake the feeling that trouble was on the horizon â and he would need every ounce of strength to face it
