The chatter of trainers and spectators filled the large meeting hall, tension hanging heavy in the air. All the trainers who had qualified for the knockout rounds of the Junior Cup were gathered, seated in rows with the large monitor overhead glowing brightly. The excitement was palpable as Freddy, the tournament's lively announcer, stepped up to the stage, microphone in hand.
"Alright, everyone! The moment you've all been waiting for!" Freddy's voice boomed through the hall. "The Round of 16 matchups are officially confirmed! Let's see who'll be facing off in the first round of the knockouts!"
The monitor above lit up, and one by one, the matchups appeared in bold letters:
Paul vs. Trevor
Paul's sharp eyes narrowed at the screen, his expression unreadable. Meanwhile, Trevor's face paled slightly as he leaned back in his chair. Shauna, sitting beside him, nudged his shoulder encouragingly.
"You've got this, Trevor!" she grinned. "Paul's not that scary."
Trevor gave a nervous laugh. "Yeah... easy for you to say."
Montgomery vs. Sawyer
Sawyer smiled brightly, adjusting his green notebook in his lap. Montgomery, sitting nearby, didn't even react â his stone-cold demeanor never wavered.
Trip vs. Cameron
Cameron's eyes widened in excitement. "Yes! Let's go!" He pumped his fist. Trip, sitting coolly a few rows ahead, smirked to himself. "Let's see if that energy lasts," Trip murmured under his breath.
Tierno vs. Stephan
Tierno rubbed the back of his head. "Man... Stephan's tough."
"Hey, just dance your way through it!" Shauna teased with a wink.
Alain vs. Remo
Alain's sharp gaze didn't change. He crossed his arms, eyes glinting with quiet confidence. Remo, a confident Kalos trainer with his Garchomp, sat across the room with a subtle smirk.
Barry vs. Conway
Barry practically jumped out of his seat. "Yes! This is gonna be easy!"
Conway adjusted his glasses, smiling slyly. "Oh... we'll see about that."
Ash vs. Astrid
Ash leaned forward, a slight glint of excitement flashing in his amber eyes. "Astrid, huh?" He turned toward Clemont, who was sitting next to him.
"She's strong," Clemont said, adjusting his glasses.
In the stands, Serena's heart quickened slightly. She watched Ash carefully, smiling softly at how calm he looked.
Astrid, sitting calmly near the back, glanced toward Ash and gave a small smile. "I hope you're ready," she said quietly to herself.
Calem vs. Tobias
"Oh man... Calem got Tobias?" Barry winced. "Yikes."
Calem sat back in his chair, swallowing hard. Tobias's icy gaze barely moved toward the screen. The dark-haired trainer sat alone, arms crossed, a silent chill radiating from him.
Freddy's grin widened as the final matchups were set. "And there you have it, folks! Eight incredible matchups featuring the best of the best! And that's not all â for the knockout rounds, we'll be using special venues scattered all across Kalos to test the trainers' adaptability and skill. So be prepared for anything!"
The crowd buzzed with excitement.
Meanwhile, Ash sat quietly, his hands resting on his knees. He could feel the weight of the matchups settling in, but deep down, he was ready. This was where the real competition started â and he wouldn't back down now.
â
After the Junior Cup matchups were announced, the energy among the trainers remained electric. The anticipation of the upcoming battles lingered as the crowd dispersed from the large meeting hall. The excitement had settled into a quiet hum as students made their way toward the cafeteria for lunch.
The school's cafeteria was buzzing with noise as trays clattered and conversations filled the air. The usual spot in the middle of the room was packed with familiar faces â Gary, Trip, Barry, Paul, Drew, Iris, Serena, May, Misty, Dawn, Zoey, Conway, Shauna, Tierno, Trevor, and Leaf were all gathered around a couple of long tables pushed together.
Gary leaned back in his seat, arms crossed as his eyes drifted toward the far end of the room. His gaze narrowed slightly.
Ash wasn't with them.
Instead, Ash sat at one of the smaller tables near the back, sitting across from Clemont. The blonde-haired Gym Leader was animatedly discussing battle strategies, waving his hands slightly while Ash listened intently, nodding along.
"Tch," Gary scoffed, setting down his drink. "There he goes again."
"What?" Barry asked, between bites of his sandwich.
Gary gestured toward Ash with his chin. "Him. Sitting over there."
"Maybe he just wants to hang out with Clemont," Dawn offered, giving a small shrug.
Gary's expression darkened. "Or maybe he's forgetting who his actual friends are."
Meanwhile, Serena's eyes lingered toward Ash. A soft smile curled at the edges of her lips as she tucked a strand of her honey-blonde hair behind her ear. He looked so focused talking to Clemont â calm and comfortable.
Just as the group continued their chatter, two familiar figures strutted toward Ash and Clemont's table with calculated confidence. Miette and Ursula.
Miette's short blue hair was perfectly styled, and her mischievous smirk widened as she approached. Ursula, with her pink hair tied in lavender ribbons, followed at her side with an equally sharp smile. Their heels clicked with purpose against the tile floor as they closed in.
"Well, well," Miette purred, placing a hand on the table between Ash and Clemont. "Look who's sitting alone with his little boyfriend."
Ash's eyebrow twitched. "We're just talking, Miette."
"Oh, of course," Miette teased, sliding into the seat next to Ash without asking. Ursula mirrored her move, sitting next to Clemont, who visibly stiffened.
"So," Ursula's tone was sugary sweet as she leaned in toward Clemont, resting her chin on her hand. "What's the strategy? Gonna teach Ash how to actually battle?"
Clemont's glasses slid down his nose as he turned bright red. "N-No! That's not what this is!"
Miette's gaze drifted toward Ash, eyes narrowing slightly. "You know, Ash, maybe you should sit with us next time." Her finger traced the edge of the table. "We'd be a lot more fun."
Ash gave her a flat look. "I'm good here."
Miette's smirk deepened. "Hmm. Suit yourself." She leaned back lazily in her chair. "But don't come crying to me when Clemont bores you to death."
Ursula giggled. "Assuming he hasn't already."
Ash's eyes narrowed. "We're busy."
"Oh, so serious," Miette teased, but her expression softened for just a moment as her eyes lingered on Ash. "But fine... we'll leave you boys to it."
With that, Miette stood, Ursula following. Miette brushed a hand through her short blue hair as they turned to walk away, Ursula giving a little backward wave.
"I'm sure you'll be begging for more excitement soon," Miette called over her shoulder.
As they left, Clemont rubbed the back of his neck, still red-faced. "They... uh... really know how to make an entrance."
Ash shook his head with a sigh. "Yeah. But they're not gonna get to me."
Clemont smiled weakly. "Yeah... sure."
Across the room, Gary was still watching Ash with narrowed eyes. He exhaled sharply and crossed his arms again. "Seriously... what's his deal?"
â
The chime of the school bell echoed down the halls as students shuffled back into their classrooms. The usual chatter filled the air, but there was an underlying tension in the room as Professor Rowan's class settled in.
Professor Rowan stood at the front of the room, his sharp gaze scanning the students as they filed in. His white mustache twitched slightly as his eyes narrowed toward Barry â who was half-running into the room at the last second, his bag slung over one shoulder and his hair slightly disheveled.
"Barry," Professor Rowan's deep voice cut through the classroom noise like a blade.
Barry froze, mid-step. "...Uh, yeah?"
Rowan's gaze hardened. "You're late. Again."
Barry's face went pale. "Iâ wellâ I meanâ"
"No excuses." Rowan's tone was calm, almost measured. "This has become a pattern. And what have I told you about patterns, Barry?"
Barry swallowed hard. "T-That they show character?"
"Correct," Rowan's gaze sharpened. "And your character is showing a lack of discipline."
Barry opened his mouth, but nothing came out. His face burned with embarrassment as the room grew uncomfortably quiet. A couple of students exchanged uneasy glances.
"Perhaps," Rowan continued, "if you spent less time running around aimlessly and more time preparing yourself properly, you would not constantly be making this classroom your personal finish line."
Barry's fists clenched at his sides. His lips parted â but before he could speakâ
"That's enough," Paul's cold voice cut through the silence.
Every head in the room turned toward Paul, who was sitting at his desk, arms crossed, his sharp purple eyes narrowed toward Rowan.
Rowan's gaze slowly shifted toward him. "Excuse me?"
Paul's chair scraped against the floor as he stood up, his stare unwavering. "We get it. Barry's late. Again. But you've made your point â like you always do."
Rowan's eyes darkened. "If Barry cannot accept criticismâ"
"It's not criticism. It's you always having something to say about our group," Paul interrupted coldly.
Rowan's brow furrowed. "Watch your tone, Paul."
Paul's stare remained stone-cold. "Then maybe you should watch how you talk to Barry."
The tension in the room skyrocketed. Dawn's eyes widened. Zoey sat up straighter, her brows raised in disbelief. Serena's hands tightened slightly around her notebook. Even Calem, who was sitting near the back of the room, was watching the situation unfold with wide eyes â though he wisely kept his mouth shut.
"Paul..." Barry whispered, his eyes wide with surprise.
"Since when do you care?" Rowan's tone was sharp now.
Paul's eyes flashed dangerously. "Since you started treating us like we're beneath you."
Rowan's gaze narrowed. "I am your professor. You will not speak to me with suchâ"
"That's enough!"
Ash's voice shot through the room like a spark of lightning.
Paul and Rowan both turned toward him.
Ash had stood up, his hands pressed firmly on his desk. His brown eyes were burning â not with anger exactly, but with frustration. His heart hammered in his chest as the entire room's attention shifted toward him.
"Paul's right," Ash said, his tone sharp but measured. "You always have something to say about us. Whether it's Barry being late, or Trip being 'too arrogant,' or me needing to 'show more discipline.'"
Rowan's gaze tightened. "If you cannot accept authorityâ"
"It's not about authority," Ash snapped, his voice cutting through the air. "It's about you treating us differently."
Rowan's jaw tensed. His eyes bore into Ash's. "You are walking a dangerous line, Ash."
Ash's hands curled into fists at his sides. A rush of anger surged through him â the same fiery energy he'd felt standing in front of Lysandre days ago. But he forced himself to breathe, forced himself to steady his voice. He wasn't about to lose control now â not after everything.
"I know where the line is," Ash said evenly. "And I'm not crossing it. But if you've got a problem with us, maybe you should figure out why."
The room was silent. Completely silent. Even Gary, who usually had a smirk for moments like this, was watching with a tense expression.
Professor Rowan's eyes darkened beneath his heavy brows. He took a slow breath. His mouth opened â but then closed again. His gaze lingered on Ash for a moment longer before his expression returned to its usual cold neutrality.
"Sit down," Rowan ordered quietly.
Ash didn't move for a second â then he slowly lowered back into his seat. Paul sat back down as well, his eyes still icy. Barry remained standing, looking at both of them with disbelief.
Rowan turned toward the front of the room. "Class dismissed early today."
Without another word, Rowan turned and walked toward the door, his coat swishing behind him. The heavy door clicked shut behind him.
For a long moment, no one said anything.
Then Barry turned toward Paul. "...Dude."
Paul scoffed. "Don't mention it."
Barry's mouth opened â then closed. A sheepish smile tugged at his lips. "Still... thanks."
Paul's gaze softened, just slightly. "Tch. Don't make me regret it."
Barry beamed. "You won't!"
Ash shook his head, exhaling sharply. His heart was still racing. He turned toward Paul, who was already gathering his things.
"You didn't have to do that," Ash said quietly.
Paul's gaze flicked toward him. "Yeah, I did."
Ash smiled faintly. "Well... thanks."
Paul's mouth twitched slightly â not a smile exactly, but close.
Serena was watching Ash closely from across the room. Her eyes sparkled with quiet admiration. That was the Ash she knew â fierce, passionate, loyal.
Dawn glanced at Zoey. "Did that seriously just happen?"
Zoey leaned back in her seat. "Yeah. And I think Rowan's not gonna forget it."
Gary's gaze lingered on Ash. Slowly, a small, smug smile curled at the corner of his mouth.
"Well," Gary said, standing and stretching. "Looks like someone's finally growing a backbone."
â
Hours later...
After class had been dismissed early, due to Professor Rowan losing his patience with a certain group of students, Ash walked down the sidewalk, his hands stuffed in his pockets as the cool evening breeze swept through Lumiose City. The streets were busy with the evening rush â trainers walking with their Pokémon, street vendors calling out to sell their snacks, and the hum of traffic mingling with the chatter of city life. The sun was beginning to dip behind the skyline, casting a soft golden hue over the polished buildings and cobblestone streets.
Ash's head was still spinning from what had happened in class. His confrontation with Professor Rowan replayed in his mind over and over â the anger he'd felt, the sharpness in his own voice... and the way Paul had actually stepped in for Barry.
Paul â standing up for someone. That alone was enough to make Ash question reality.
Ash sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, his thoughts a tangled mess. He could still see the subtle admiration in Serena's eyes when he had stood up to Rowan. And Paul...
"Since you started treating us like we're beneath you."
Ash's fist tightened at his side. Maybe Paul had a point. Maybe Rowan was too hard on them. Or maybe Ash was just tired of being treated like he wasn't enough.
He was so deep in thought that the sudden buzz from his Xtransceiver made him flinch.
He pulled it out from his wrist, glancing at the screen. The caller ID flashed a name â Cilan.
Ash frowned and tapped the screen. "Cilan?"
The screen lit up, and Cilan's face appeared â sharp green eyes, slicked-back hair, and that usual calm intensity about him. But this time... his expression wasn't calm. His brows were furrowed, his gaze intense.
"Ash," Cilan's voice was steady, but there was an underlying urgency in his tone. "Where are you right now?"
Ash slowed his pace, his frown deepening. "Uh... walking home. What's going on?"
"I need you to meet with me," Cilan said quickly. "Downtown. The plaza near Prism Tower."
Ash's expression tightened. "Now?"
"Yes. Chili and Cress are already there," Cilan said, his eyes narrowing slightly. "We don't have much time."
Ash's heartbeat quickened. "What's going on?"
"I can't explain it over the line," Cilan's tone darkened. "Just... trust me, Ash. This is important."
Ash's gaze sharpened. "Is this about... Team Rocket?"
Cilan's eyes flashed. "I'll explain when you get there."
Ash's hand tightened around the edge of his Xtransceiver. His mind raced. Cilan wouldn't reach out unless it was serious.
"Got it," Ash said, his voice firm. "I'm on my way."
Cilan's face softened slightly. "Good. And Ash?"
"Yeah?"
"Be careful."
The screen went dark.
Ash stood there for a moment, heart pounding. Then his gaze lifted toward the towering spire of Prism Tower in the distance, its golden lights shimmering in the evening sun.
He clenched his fist.
Time to find out what's going on.
Without another second of hesitation, Ash broke into a run, weaving through the crowded streets of Lumiose City â straight toward the heart of the city.
