Ash stepped off the bus, feeling the cool afternoon breeze sweep across his face as he adjusted his bag over his shoulder. The ride home had been quiet, his thoughts still clouded with flashes of Serena's smile and those deep blue eyes. He shook the thoughts away as he walked up the familiar path toward his house.
The front door opened as soon as he reached it, and his mother's warm smile greeted him.
"Welcome home, honey," Delia said sweetly, stepping aside to let him in. "How was school today?"
Ash shrugged, slipping off his shoes. "It was fine."
Delia's smile faltered slightly, her eyes softening with concern. "You've been staying out of trouble, right?" Her tone was light, but Ash could tell there was weight behind the question. "After that whole incident with Calem and Jack..."
"Yeah, yeah," Ash waved it off, not really wanting to get into it. "It's fine, Mom."
"Well, good." Delia's expression brightened as she added, "Oh, by the wayâLeaf's here."
"What?" Ash blinked, glancing toward the living room.
Sure enough, there she was, sitting cross-legged on the couch, flipping through a magazine. Leaf's mischievous green eyes sparkled when she noticed him standing there.
"Well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, tossing the magazine aside and standing up. Her brown hair bounced as she stretched. "My parents went out of town for the day, so I figured I'd crash here. Hope you don't mind."
Ash sighed. "Why would I even have a choice?"
Leaf grinned. "You don't."
Ash shook his head, but before he could say anything else, Leaf crossed the room and linked her arm with his.
"C'mon," she said with a mischievous smirk. "Let's go for a walk."
"A walk?" Ash raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
Leaf shrugged. "Why not? You look like you've got a lot on your mind. Besides, it's been a while since we've just hung out."
Ash hesitated for a moment, then let out a small breath. "Alright, fine. Just for a little bit."
"Good answer," Leaf chirped, dragging him toward the door.
"Don't stay out too long!" Delia called after them as Leaf pulled Ash down the path outside.
Ash sighed as they walked side by side through Vaniville Town's quiet streets. The late afternoon sun cast a golden hue over the cobblestone roads and flower-lined walkways. Leaf's grip on his arm was light, but her presence next to him somehow made his racing mind settle a little.
"So..." Leaf's tone was playful. "Are you gonna tell me what's been eating at you lately?"
Ash frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, don't play dumb with me, Ashy-boy." Leaf's green eyes glinted knowingly. "You've been off. Like, more than usual. And you keep sitting with Clemont."
"What's wrong with that?" Ash shot back.
Leaf shrugged. "Nothing... but it's not like you."
Ash sighed, letting his gaze drift to the cobblestone beneath his feet. He really didn't know how to explain it â the recent battle with Clemont, the wild night with Cilan, the feelings about Serena that he barely understood himself. His mind was a mess.
"Maybe I just needed a change," Ash said quietly.
Leaf studied him for a moment, her smile softening. "Well... if you ever feel like talking about it, I'm here."
Ash glanced sideways at her, his expression softening despite himself. "Yeah. I know."
Leaf's hand slipped away from his arm as she grinned. "Alright, then. Let's keep walking. You could use the fresh air."
They had been walking for a while now, the sun slowly dipping toward the horizon, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets. The gentle hum of Vaniville Town's quiet atmosphere surrounded them â the distant chatter of people, the occasional rustling of leaves as the breeze swept through the trees.
Ash hadn't spoken much since they left the house. His hands were buried deep in his pockets, eyes fixed on the ground as his thoughts swirled relentlessly in his head.
The memory of that night with Cilan still weighed on him. The sound of Meowth's panicked yowling, the cold look in Cilan's eyes as he reached into his waistcoat, the deafening blast of the FBI's attack on Team Rocket's boat â it all replayed in his mind like a bad dream. He hated feeling like this â uncertain, rattled, and worst of all... scared.
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. What if Team Rocket came back? What if Cilan and his brothers were in over their heads? What if he was dragged into something worse?
"Ash?"
He snapped out of his thoughts when he felt Leaf's hand lightly touch his arm. She was looking at him, her green eyes narrowed in quiet concern.
"You've been quiet," she said gently. "What's going on?"
Ash hesitated, then shook his head. "It's nothing."
Leaf stopped walking, planting herself in front of him. "Ash." Her tone sharpened, but her eyes remained soft. "It's not nothing. I know you. You don't get this quiet unless something's really bothering you."
Ash's mouth tightened, and he let out a slow breath. "...It's complicated."
Leaf folded her arms. "Then try me."
Ash hesitated for a moment longer, then sighed.
Leaf raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
Ash rubbed the back of his neck, glancing away. His cheeks flushed slightly. "I... I don't know how to say this, but... I think... I think I'm starting to feel kinda weird around Serena."
Leaf's eyes widened slightly before a knowing smile crept across her lips. "Weird, huh?"
Ash's face reddened. "Yeah... I mean... whenever I see her, my chest kind of feels tight. And my heart starts beating really fast. And whenever she talks to me, I don't know why, but I start feeling... nervous. And not like battle-nervous. Just... different."
Leaf's smile widened. "Ash..."
"And it's not like I don't like it," Ash quickly added. "I mean â it's nice. She's nice. But... I don't know. It's confusing."
Leaf chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Ash, you're so clueless."
Ash frowned. "Huh?"
Leaf stepped closer, tapping his chest with her finger. "Ash, you like her."
Ash's eyes widened. "Whaâ I mean, yeah, of course I like her. She's my friendâ"
"No," Leaf cut him off, her smile growing mischievous. "You like her."
Ash's mouth opened... then closed. His face flushed deeper. "Wait... you mean..."
Leaf laughed. "Yes, dummy. You've got a crush."
Ash's mind raced. His mouth opened again, but no words came out. The idea that he liked Serena â liked her â was almost too much for his brain to compute. But when he thought about it â the way she smiled at him, how his heart sped up when she laughed, the way her ocean-blue eyes made him feel like the world slowed down â it all started to make sense.
"...Oh."
Leaf grinned. "Yeah. Oh."
Ash rubbed his forehead. "But... what do I even do about that?"
Leaf shrugged. "That's up to you."
Ash sighed, running a hand through his messy black hair. "Great."
Leaf's smile softened. "Hey. Don't stress about it too much. Just... be yourself. She already likes you, you know."
Ash's head snapped toward her. "Wait â what?"
Leaf smirked. "Oh, come on. It's so obvious."
Ash's face burned. "You're kidding."
Leaf giggled. "Nope."
Ash groaned. "This just got so much more complicated."
Leaf reached over, playfully ruffling his hair. "You'll figure it out. Just don't overthink it."
Ash sighed heavily, but despite his confusion, he couldn't help but feel a little lighter. The feelings swirling in his chest were still messy and complicated â but at least now, they made sense.
So Ash has finally realized what his conflicted emotions and feelings mean about the Honey blonde-haired performer, and it was all thanks to the talk with Leaf. He developed a crush on Serena without even realizing it. Now it's just a question of what he will do about it.
