The weekend had come and gone in the blink of an eye. Before Ash knew it, Monday morning had arrived, and with it, another week of school.
As he made his way onto campus, Pikachu perched on his shoulder, the usual morning chatter of students filled the air. Everything felt... normal. Almost as if nothing had happened. Almost as if he hadn't spent his Friday night in a high-speed chase through Lumiose City with Cilan and Chili, pursued by a furious Team Rocket and an armed FBI task force.
But that was then. This was now. And right now, his focus was on school.
As Ash stepped through the main gates, his eyes landed on a familiar honey-blonde girl waiting nearby.
Serena.
A small smile crept onto his face. It was always nice seeing her first thing in the morning.
Serena noticed him immediately, her light blue eyes brightening. "Ash! Good morning!"
Ash smiled. "Morning, Serena."
She took a quick glance at Pikachu, then back at Ash. "Looks like someone's well-rested. You, on the other hand..." She studied his face, tilting her head slightly. "Did you even sleep this weekend?"
Ash chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. "Heh, yeah... just a lot on my mind."
Serena frowned slightly. "Are you sure you're okay?"
Ash nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Really." He quickly changed the subject. "So, uh... looks like Calem and Jack are back today."
Serena sighed. "Yep. I just hope they don't start anything again. What happened last week was completely unnecessary."
It was true. Calem and Jack were back in school after serving their two day suspension following their dispute the other week.
Ash shrugged. "Guess we'll see."
As they walked together toward Professor Sycamore's classroom, the morning sunlight cast a soft glow over the school grounds. The two of them chatted idly, Pikachu occasionally letting out small squeaks in response to the conversation.
For the first time since Friday night, Ash felt... relaxed. Just walking, talking, and being in Serena's presence made things feel a little lighter.
Inside Sycamore's classroom.
The professor's enthusiastic voice faded into a distant hum, the chatter of his classmates became white noise, and even Pikachu's usual energy beside him felt muted. Ash Ketchum was zoning out.
But this time, it wasn't because he was tired. It wasn't because of battles, Gym Badges, or even the chaotic events from Friday night.
It was because of her.
Serena.
The thought struck him like a bolt of lightning. Why was it always her?
Ash didn't think much about feelingsânot in the way other people did. He wasn't the type to sit around analyzing emotions, dissecting every little detail like Clemont or Trip might. He was a trainer. A battler. He thought about strategies, Pokémon, and rivalriesânot... love.
And yet, every time he was around Serena, something inside him shifted.
She was always thereâbright, warm, constant. Always worrying about him, always looking at him with those soft, light blue eyes. Like he was the most important person in the world.
He thought back to this morning. How happy he felt when she was the first person he saw at school. How hearing her voice instantly made his day better.
Why?
Why was it different with her?
Ash clenched his fists on his desk, his brows furrowing slightly. His chest felt weird, tight in a way he didn't understand. It wasn't like the thrill of battle, nor the rush of excitement when he won a fight. It was... something else.
Something he couldn't put a name to.
He was falling in love with Serena.
And he didn't even realize it.
Leaf, of all people, would have a field day if she caught onto this. She always teased him about being dense, but this... this was something even he couldn't deny.
A sharp nudge to his arm snapped him back to reality.
"Ash? Hellooo?" Serena whispered beside him, her voice laced with concern. "You okay?"
Ash blinked rapidly, jolting upright. "Huh? Ohâyeah! I'm fine!" He gave a quick grin, hoping she wouldn't see right through him.
Serena frowned slightly but let it go. "You spaced out for a second there..."
Ash let out a breath and rubbed the back of his neck. "Guess I was just thinking about... stuff."
She smiled gently. "Well, don't think too hard. You might hurt yourself."
He chuckled, shaking off the strange feeling in his chest. Maybe he was just tired. Maybe it was nothing.
But deep down, something told him...
It wasn't nothing.
The lunch bell rang, and Ash made his way through the bustling cafeteria, his eyes scanning the room briefly before he spotted Clemont sitting at their usual spot near the far window. Without hesitation, Ash walked over, setting his tray down as Clemont offered him a friendly smile.
"Hey, Ash," Clemont greeted warmly, adjusting his glasses. "How's it going?"
Ash shrugged. "Not bad."
The two boys fell into easy conversation about last week's gym battle and some new Pokémon strategies Clemont had been working on. Ash listened intently, his mind focused on the details of Clemont's ideas. There was something about Clemont's calm, methodical way of speaking that made Ash feel relaxed.
From across the cafeteria, Gary watched the scene unfold with an increasingly irritated expression. He sat with Paul, Trip, Barry, and the others, but his attention was fixed on Ash.
"Unbelievable," Gary muttered, stabbing at his food with his fork. "That's the third time he's ditched us to sit with Clemont."
Barry, sitting beside him, raised an eyebrow. "What's the big deal? They're just talking."
"The big deal is that's our table," Gary said sharply. "Ash and Clemont barely started talking to each other recently, and now he's practically glued to him. What's gotten into him?"
Zoey, who had just taken a seat at the table next to Dawn, chuckled. "Maybe Ash just likes Clemont's company."
Gary scoffed. "Yeah, right." He leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms. "Ash isn't the type to sit with the quiet nerdy type. Something's up."
Paul, sitting with his arms crossed, barely reacted. "If it works for Ash, why does it matter?"
Gary gave him a pointed look. "It matters because it's Ash."
From the other side of the room, Ash remained oblivious to the conversation.
Ash was mid-bite into his sandwich when a shadow fell over the table. He glanced up to see Calem standing there, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, a quiet but familiar calmness in his expression.
"Hey," Calem said casually. "Mind if I join?"
Ash smiled. "Yeah, sure. Take a seat."
Calem slid into the seat across from Ash and Clemont, setting his tray down without a word. His usual composed demeanor was backâcool and effortlessâbut there was a noticeable lightness to him now, like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
"How's it going?" Ash asked.
"Better," Calem admitted, his tone steady. "Two days off gave me time to think." He glanced toward Ash. "Sorry for... y'know, dragging you into that whole mess with Jack."
Ash shook his head. "It's fine. It's not like you started it."
Calem's lips curled slightly at that. "Still, things got out of hand." He sighed. "I guess I just... lost my head a bit."
"It happens," Clemont offered, adjusting his glasses. "What matters is that you're back."
Calem's eyes flicked toward Clemont, giving him a small nod of respect before his gaze shifted back to Ash. "So... how was the gym battle?"
Ash's face brightened at the mention of it. "It was intense! Clemont's Heliolisk gave Krookodile some real trouble, but Frogadier came through in the end."
Calem smirked. "Not bad. You're really pushing toward the league, huh?"
"Of course!" Ash said confidently. "I'm not stopping until I win it all."
Calem's eyes glinted with quiet admiration. "That's what I like about you."
Clemont smiled, but his expression faltered slightly when he noticed someone from across the cafeteria watching them closely. Gary sat at his usual table, his expression cool but his eyes sharp as he watched Ash and Calem talking. Clemont's gaze lingered for a moment before he turned his attention back to the conversation.
"So, uh..." Clemont cleared his throat. "Do you know where your next gym battle is going to be?"
Ash hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "Not yet... I'm kinda figuring it out."
"Well," Calem said with a calm smile. "Wherever it isâyou've got this."
Ash grinned. "Thanks, Calem."
Junior Cup meeting after lunch with Don George...
The atmosphere in the assembly hall was electric with tension and anticipation as the trainers filed in one by one. Ash, Paul, Trip, Barry, Calem, Alain, and Tobias all took their seats among a sea of other competitors. Some were chatting nervously, others sitting in intense silence as the meeting was about to begin.
At the front of the hall stood Don George, a broad-shouldered man with thick muscles and a commanding presence. His arms were crossed over his chest, and his sharp eyes scanned the room with authority. His sleeveless black shirt only made him look more imposing.
"Alright, settle down!" Don George's deep, booming voice carried effortlessly through the room. The murmurs and whispers among the trainers died down almost instantly. "Glad to see most of you made it here today." His gaze swept over the crowd before settling on the front row where Ash and the others sat. "Let's get straight to the point."
He stepped toward the center of the room.
"As you all know, the Junior Cup operates on a group stage format," Don George began, his tone sharp and professional. "We have eight groups of four trainers. That means a total of 32 trainers at the start of the tournament. After each trainer completes three battles within their group, only the top two trainers from each group advance to the Round of 16."
Ash leaned back slightly in his seat, arms crossed. He already knew this, but hearing it out loud made the stakes feel heavier.
"We've already got five confirmed trainers in the Round of 16," Don George continued. "Let's take a moment to recognize them: Trip." His eyes flicked toward the cocky blonde sitting with his arms folded and a self-assured smirk on his face.
"Paul." Paul gave a small nod, his face completely unreadable as usual.
"Ash." Ash's eyes widened as a few scattered claps echoed through the room. He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Tobias." The dark-haired trainer sitting toward the back didn't even flinch, his piercing eyes calm and analytical beneath the brim of his hat.
"And of course... Alain." Alain, sitting coolly with his arms folded, gave a slight nod of acknowledgment.
Don George's gaze sharpened. "Now, that still leaves 11 open spots in the Round of 16. That means some of you better step up your game. There are still a handful of you who haven't finished your third battle yet. That includes some of you sitting right here." His eyes flashed toward Barry and Calem, whose expressions both tightened.
"Make no mistake," Don George's voice deepened. "This is not just any tournament. The Junior Cup is a breeding ground for champions. You think you're good enough to be the best? Then prove it." His gaze hardened. "We're looking for the best trainers in the world, not excuses."
Trip smirked slightly, leaning back in his chair with an annoyingly confident glint in his eye. Barry, seated next to him, huffed. "Tch. Like I need another battleâI'm ready to win it all now!"
Paul shot him a cold glance. "That's exactly why you'll lose."
Barry's mouth opened in protest, but Don George's voice cut through any brewing arguments.
"Final group battles are scheduled to finish by Wednesday," Don George announced. "If you don't finish them by thenâyou're out. No exceptions."
Alain's expression remained cool as his dark blue eyes watched Don George with laser focus. Tobias's gaze barely flicked upward. Paul sat perfectly still, arms crossed, while Trip's smirk deepened.
"That's all for now," Don George said gruffly. "Train hard. You'll need it."
As Don George turned and walked toward the exit, Ash glanced around at the others. The tension in the room was palpable. The stakes were real now. All the months of training and battlesâit was all building toward this moment.
Trip stood, stretching his arms behind his head. "Well, this is going to be fun."
Paul stood without a word, his eyes narrowing as he watched Trip saunter away. Alain was already heading toward the exit. Tobias followed behind him silently, his dark eyes cutting through the room like ice.
Barry turned toward Ash. "Man, this is going to be intense!"
After the school day ended...
The bus rumbled quietly beneath Ash's feet as he sat near the window, his head resting lazily against the cool glass. The sky outside was painted with hues of deep orange and soft lavender, the last remnants of sunlight slowly fading into the quiet of the evening. The steady hum of the bus's engine mixed with the faint chatter of a few students scattered throughout the seats, but Ash wasn't paying attention to any of it.
His mind was elsewhere.
No matter how hard he tried to focus, his thoughts kept circling back to her.
Those bright, ocean-blue eyes that sparkled every time she laughed. That silky honey-blonde hair that flowed so naturally, catching the light whenever she turned her head. And that smileâ
That smile.
Ash's heart tightened at the thought of it. How many times had she smiled at him today alone? He could recall every single one. That soft curve of her lips, the way her eyes lit upâeach time, it made his chest tighten and his face warm. He wasn't sure why it affected him so much... but it did.
And every time she smiled at him, he had to fight to keep his composure. He'd press his hands into his pockets, clear his throat, and try to act like it was nothing. Like his heart wasn't racing. Like his cheeks weren't burning.
He was used to facing down some of the strongest trainers in the world. He'd battled legendaries, pushed through injuries, and trained harder than anyone he knew. But thisâ
This feelingâ
It was different.
Serena was different.
He didn't understand it, but it stirred something in him. Something that made him restless. Something that made him feel a little... off balance.
Ash sighed, his breath fogging up the glass. His reflection stared back at him, dark eyes shadowed with quiet confusion.
What was this?
What was she doing to him?
One thing was certain, he needed answers and fast!
