Part 42

The 'Outcast' - First Year1,805 words~10 min read

The sleek red sports car cruised down the darkened roads leading out of Lumiose City, its tires humming softly against the pavement. The adrenaline from the chase had long faded, replaced by a heavy silence that sat between Cilan and Ash. Streetlights flickered past them in a rhythmic pattern, casting momentary glows over their tired faces.

Cilan, gripping the wheel with one hand, let out a small sigh before speaking. "I know tonight didn't go as planned, but I still appreciate your help, Ash. We were so close." His voice carried frustration, but also gratitude.

Ash, sitting in the back seat, arms folded, nodded. "Yeah... I just can't believe they got away. And the Meteonite—who knows where it is now." His voice was quieter than usual, lacking its usual energy. The night had drained him.

Cilan tightened his grip on the wheel. "It's not over. Not yet. As soon as we get another lead, I'll reach out to you." His emerald eyes flickered to Ash in the rearview mirror, sharp and serious. "Be ready."

Ash met his gaze and nodded firmly. "I will."

Before long, they rolled to a stop in front of Ash's home in Vaniville Town. The familiar sight of his house, warmly lit from the inside, was a stark contrast to the chaotic night he had just endured. Ash exhaled, rubbing the back of his head.

"Thanks for the ride," he said, opening the door.

Cilan gave a small nod. "Get some rest, Ash."

With that, Ash stepped out of the car and watched as Cilan drove off into the night, the red glow of his taillights fading into the distance. Taking a deep breath, Ash turned toward his home. He was exhausted—physically and mentally. As he stepped inside, the warmth of his house embraced him, but his mind was still elsewhere, replaying the events of the night.

It had been a long Friday night.

—

Sunlight streamed through the blinds, casting golden streaks across the room. Ash lay sprawled on his bed, arms lazily draped over his chest, staring at the ceiling. His mind was a tangled mess, replaying last night's chaos over and over.

Ash sighed, sitting up and ruffling his hair. Man... what a night. He still wasn't sure how to process it all. Part of him wanted to push it aside, to focus on something else—anything else. Maybe getting his next Gym Badge? He had already won five... why not go for number six?

Only problem was, he had no idea where to go next.

He grabbed his Xtransceiver from the nightstand, scrolling through a map of Kalos, but his tired brain refused to focus. The thought of battling again, feeling that rush, strategizing, and clashing with another Gym Leader—it sounded good. Something to take his mind off everything.

But where?

A soft knock at his door broke his train of thought.

"Ash, are you awake?" came the gentle voice of his mother, Delia.

Ash blinked and set his Xtransceiver down. "Uh... yeah, I'm up."

The door creaked open slightly, and Delia peeked inside with a warm smile. "Good, because Gary's at the front door waiting for you."

Ash raised an eyebrow. "Gary?"

She nodded. "Mhm. He seemed pretty eager to see you."

Ash swung his legs off the bed and stood up, stretching his arms over his head. What could Gary want this early? Whatever it was, he had a feeling it wouldn't be anything ordinary.

"Alright, I'll be down in a sec," he said.

Delia gave him a smile before closing the door behind her.

Ash stepped out of his house, his hands in his pockets, feeling the cool air of the morning breeze against his skin. He greeted Gary, who was waiting for him at the front gate with Barry by his side. The trio exchanged friendly greetings before setting off down the quiet, peaceful streets of Vaniville.

The walk to Gary's house was filled with the usual chatter between the three boys. Barry was as loud and energetic as ever, rambling on about how he was going to charge into his next battle headfirst, while Gary occasionally rolled his eyes at the blond's antics. Ash, on the other hand, remained unusually quiet. His thoughts kept drifting back to last night—the flashing red-and-blue lights, the roaring engine of Cilan's car, the cold fury in Cilan's voice when the Meteonite was lost. The intensity of it all still lingered in his mind, making it hard to focus on anything else.

When they arrived at Gary's backyard, the sight before them was nothing short of intense. Paul and Trip were locked in a heated battle, their Pokémon clashing with raw power and precision. Sparks crackled in the air, dust kicked up from the force of their attacks, and neither boy looked ready to back down.

Ash watched, but his mind barely registered the battle. It was like white noise to him. The chaos of last night's mission still loomed over him, and for some reason, it just wouldn't fade.

Gary, noticing Ash's quietness, crossed his arms and shot him a sideways glance. "Alright, spill it."

Ash blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. "Huh? Spill what?"

Gary scoffed. "Don't play dumb, Ashy-boy. You've been acting weird lately. And don't think I haven't noticed you ditching us to sit with that nerdy kid, Clemont."

Barry chimed in, "Yeah, man! What's up with that? Not that we're, y'know, mad or anything, but it's kinda weird seeing you hang out with someone like him instead of us."

Ash furrowed his brows, then shook his head. "Clemont's not a nerd," he said firmly. "He's a good friend. I feel comfortable around him."

Gary raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed by the answer. "Comfortable? You serious?"

Ash just nodded. He didn't feel like explaining further. Clemont had been nothing but kind to him, and for some reason, sitting with him felt easier than dealing with whatever tension was starting to brew among his usual group.

Gary exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "Tch. Whatever, do what you want."

Barry still looked confused but shrugged it off. "Well, as long as you don't go full nerd on us, I guess it's fine."

Ash rolled his eyes at Barry's comment but said nothing.

In the background, Paul and Trip's battle raged on, but Ash's mind was already elsewhere again. He knew his friends weren't exactly mad at him, but something told him they weren't thrilled, either.

As the battle between Paul and Trip raged on, the sheer intensity of their attacks made it feel like the entire backyard had become a battlefield. Ash watched absentmindedly, still caught up in his own thoughts, when suddenly, Paul called out, "That's enough for now."

Trip nodded in agreement, rolling his shoulder as he recalled his Pokémon. "Yeah, let's take a break."

The two boys stepped back, breathing slightly heavier than before but still composed. Paul took a swig from his water bottle before turning his sharp gaze toward Ash. "You look out of it," he noted bluntly. "Something on your mind?"

Trip crossed his arms, also studying Ash. "Yeah, you're unusually quiet. What's up?"

Ash blinked, snapping himself back to reality. "Oh, uh, it's nothing," he said quickly, brushing off their concerns. Instead, he glanced around the backyard, suddenly realizing someone was missing. "Hey... where's Calem? I haven't seen him since, well..." He trailed off, not wanting to bring up the fight with Jack too much.

Gary leaned against the patio railing with a smirk. "Oh, him? He's been grounded."

Ash's eyebrows shot up. "Grounded?"

Barry whistled, shaking his head. "Yup. His folks weren't too happy about the fight, especially since he didn't even need to get involved. So now he's stuck at home, can't go anywhere."

Paul scoffed, crossing his arms. "Figures. He had no reason to throw himself into that mess."

Trip smirked slightly. "At least now he has time to think about what he did."

Ash frowned slightly. He knew Calem had acted on impulse, but he also knew the guy wasn't bad at heart. Maybe he just let his emotions get the best of him.

"Huh," Ash muttered, running a hand through his hair. "Didn't think it'd be that serious."

Gary shrugged. "Well, that's what happens when you make dumb decisions. Anyway, not our problem."

—

As the afternoon sun cast long shadows over Gary's backyard, the conversation naturally drifted to the biggest event—the Junior Cup.

Barry, as always, was the first to bring it up, practically bouncing on his feet. The Junior Cup is gonna be insane when it starts back up!"

Trip smirked confidently. "Yeah, and we all know who the favorites are. Tobias, Paul, Alain... and, of course, me."

Paul rolled his eyes at Trip's arrogance but didn't argue. Instead, he folded his arms and said, "Tobias is still the biggest threat. The guy's got that Darkrai and probably even more legendaries up his sleeve."

Gary, despite no longer being in the competitive scene, was just as engaged in the discussion. "Yeah, but let's not forget Alain. His Mega Charizard X is no joke. He's the type of guy who just keeps getting stronger with every battle."

Barry grinned. "And then there's Paul! He's been training non-stop. I wouldn't be surprised if this year's final comes down to Paul and Tobias."

Trip huffed. "Tch, don't count me out so easily. I've trained harder than ever. This year, I'm aiming for the top."

Paul gave him a sideways glance. "You'd better back up that talk when the battles start."

As the boys continued discussing potential matchups, strategies, and rivalries, Ash sat on the steps of Gary's patio, barely absorbing the conversation. His mind was still drifting—the flashing red-and-blue lights, the helicopter's roaring blades, the FBI's commanding voices. Ash was starting to think running with professionals like Cilan wasn't the best idea. He hadn't had time to fully process last night, and even though he was physically here with his friends, mentally, he was somewhere else.

Gary eventually noticed Ash's silence and nudged him with his elbow. "Yo, Ash? You still with us?"

Ash blinked a few times, snapping out of his daze. "Huh? Oh—yeah, yeah, I'm here."

Barry snickered. "Man, what's with you today? You look totally out of it."

Ash forced a small grin. "Just... didn't sleep great last night."

Gary studied him for a moment but decided to let it go. "Well, wake up, Ashy-boy. You're missing out on all the fun talk."

Ash just chuckled slightly. If only they knew what he had really been up to last night.

A/N: We'll be back to Junior cup action during midweek in the story. The Trainers who already have a guaranteed spot in the last 16 are Trip, Paul, and Ash. We'll soon find out who else makes it through.
