The final bell rang through Sycamore High, signaling the long-awaited weekend. Students rushed out of their classrooms, excitedly chattering about their weekend plans. Ash stepped into the hallway, his hands stuffed into his pockets, his expression unreadable. The weight of the past few days lingered in his mindâhis gym battle, his tense encounter with Principal Lysandre, and most importantly, Cilan's call about Team Rocket.
He barely paid attention as Gary and Paul discussed a training session, nor did he acknowledge Serena and the other girls as they talked about visiting the shopping district. Their conversations faded into background noise as Ash silently made his way out of the school building.
[Time Skip: Nightfall in Lumiose City]
The city had transformed under the glow of the night. Bright festival lights illuminated the streets, casting a warm, golden hue over the lively crowds. Stalls lined the sidewalks, offering an array of Kalosian treats, while street performers dazzled onlookers with their skills. Laughter and music intertwined, filling the air with an infectious energy.
But Ash wasn't here for the festivities.
A sharp vibration on his wrist snapped him out of his thoughts. His Xtransceiver screen lit up with Cilan's name. Without hesitation, he answered.
"Ash, listen carefully." Cilan's voice was as composed as ever, yet there was an unmistakable urgency behind it. "There have been confirmed sightings of Team Rocket around the festival grounds. Chili and I are already here, keeping a close watch."
Ash adjusted his cap, his expression hardening. "Where do I meet you?"
"Head to the west side of the festival, near the Ferris wheel," Cilan instructed. "Cress is monitoring from a distance. We suspect Team Rocket is using the crowd as cover to transport the Meteonite."
Ash's grip on his Xtransceiver tightened. "Understood. I'm on my way."
With a swift movement, he ended the call, exhaling sharply. Around him, the festival buzzed with joy and excitement, but none of it mattered to him right now. This wasn't a night to relaxâthis was a mission.
His eyes locked onto the distant Ferris wheel, standing tall against the night sky. Without wasting another second, Ash pushed forward, weaving through the festival crowds. His pace was quick, his mind sharp. Cilan and Chili were waiting for him, and if Team Rocket was really here, he was ready to put an end to whatever they had planned.
Ash navigated through the sea of festival-goers, his eyes scanning the vibrant scene for any sign of Cilan or Chili. The warm glow of lanterns flickered against the night sky, and the aroma of freshly baked Kalosian pastries wafted through the air. Laughter and excited chatter filled the atmosphere, yet Ash remained focused. His mission was clear.
Then, near a food stall selling Tamato Berry skewers, he spotted them.
Cilan stood with his arms crossed, his usual composed demeanor intact, while Chili leaned against a lamppost, his fiery red hair illuminated by the festival lights. The moment Chili's sharp eyes landed on Ash, a smirk stretched across his face.
"Well, well, if it isn't Ketchum himself!" Chili greeted with an enthusiastic clap on the back. "Been a while, huh? Last time we battled, you took me and my brothers on in a one-on-one match back in Unova! Man, that was a wild one."
Ash gave a small grin at the memory. "Yeah, it was. You guys really gave me a tough time back then."
Chili laughed, nudging Cilan. "You hear that? He admits we were tough!"
Cilan shook his head but allowed himself a brief smile. "Chili, focus. We're not here for nostalgia."
Before they could continue reminiscing, a voice crackled through their earpiecesâCress's unmistakable calm yet firm tone.
"Enough chatter. I've been keeping an eye on our targets from a distance. They've been circling around the east side of the festival. Looks like they're searching for somethingâor someone. We need to move. Now."
Cilan nodded, instantly switching to a more serious tone. "Understood. Ash, Chili, let's go."
Chili's playful grin faded, replaced by determination. "Time to crash Team Rocket's little party."
Away from the bright festival lights and bustling crowds, in the shadowy alleyway behind a row of vendor stalls, three figures stood huddled together. The flickering glow of a nearby streetlamp barely illuminated their faces, but the mischievous grins stretching across their lips gleamed with satisfaction.
In Jessie's gloved hands, nestled within a protective case, was the Meteoniteâits faint, eerie glow pulsating like a heartbeat. She traced her fingers along the surface, her violet eyes glinting with greed.
James, practically vibrating with excitement, clenched his fists and let out an exuberant shout. "Yeah! We did it! Now we can give this to the boss!" His voice carried through the alley, his glee barely contained.
Meowth, standing on his hind legs, let out a snicker and crossed his arms. "Heh, Giovanni's gonna love us for dis one! We finally pulled off somethin' big!" His tail swayed with anticipation, his mind already picturing the lavish rewards their boss would bestow upon them.
Jessie let out a pleased hum, admiring the Meteonite's glow. "For once, we're not just running off with Pikachu like a couple of amateurs. Thisâ" she held the case up slightly, smirking "âthis is real power."
James nodded fervently. "With this, we'll finally rise to the top ranks of Team Rocket! No more grunts, no more humiliating failuresâthis is our ticket to success!"
Meowth pumped a fist in the air. "We'll be da boss's favorites!"
The three of them cackled in unison, reveling in their supposed victory. To them, the night couldn't have been more perfect.
"Just imagine, boys," she mused, her voice laced with pride. "Giovanni will have to recognize our greatness now."
But before she could revel in her triumph any further, a swift hand darted in from the darknessâsnatching the case right out of her grasp.
"Sorry," a smooth, unwavering voice cut through the night. "But you ain't giving nothing to nobody!"
Jessie's fingers curled around empty air, her face twisting in shock as she turned to see none other than Cilan standing before her, the Meteonite now firmly in his possession. His sharp green eyes gleamed with determination, his stance unwavering.
"What?!" Jessie, James, and Meowth all shouted in perfect unison, their bodies jolting with disbelief.
But Cilan was already moving. "Chili! Ash! Let's go!"
Without hesitation, he bolted from the alleyway, Chili and Ash right on his heels.
"Hey! Get back here!" Jessie screeched, lunging forward.
James fumbled with a Poké Ball, but the trio of pursuers barely got two steps before their targets had already vanished into the festival crowd, weaving effortlessly through the sea of people.
Adrenaline pumped through Ash's veins as he sprinted alongside Chili, dodging past festival-goers. The scent of sizzling food filled the air, neon lights flashed all around, but none of it matteredâthey just needed to get out.
"There!" Chili pointed ahead, and sure enough, parked just at the edge of the festival's perimeter was a sleek red sports car. The glossy finish shimmered under the streetlights, and the absence of a roof made it all the easier to jump in on the run.
Cilan leaped into the driver's seat, the keys already in hand. Chili vaulted into the passenger seat, while Ash wasted no time hopping into the back.
"Hold on," Cilan warned as his foot slammed the gas pedal.
The tires screeched against the pavement before the car shot forward like a fired bullet, roaring down the empty nighttime streets of Lumiose. The wind whipped against Ash's face as he clutched the side of the car, his heart still pounding.
Behind them, a furious scream echoed through the festival.
"YOU LITTLE BRATS!!!" Jessie's voice rang out, but by the time she and the rest of Team Rocket stumbled onto the street, the red sports car had already disappeared into the depths of Lumiose City.
Lumiose City's streets blurred into streaks of neon as Cilan's red sports car rocketed through the roads, weaving between traffic with razor-sharp precision. The wind roared in Ash's ears as he clutched the side of the car, the Meteonite case secured tightly in his grip.
Chili, seated in the front passenger seat, had an exhilarated grin plastered across his face. "Now this is what I call a joyride!" he whooped, the wind whipping through his red hair.
Cilan, eyes locked on the road ahead, barely spared him a glance. "Less joy, more not dying, Chili!" he snapped, yanking the wheel to narrowly dodge a slow-moving taxi.
A sudden screech of tires cut through the night air.
Ash's heart lurched as a black, battered convertible swerved into their lane, pulling up dangerously close. Jessie's glare was as sharp as daggers from behind the wheel, her grip on it vice-like. James sat beside her, lips curled in an uncharacteristically bitter scowl. In the back seat, Meowth clung to the roll bar, his slitted eyes locked on the case in Ash's arms.
"Ohhh, it's them all right," Jessie seethed, her voice dripping with venom. "I should've known these pests would come crawling back into our business!"
James crossed his arms tightly, shaking his head in frustration. "Unbelievable! Every single time we're on the brink of success, these twerps show up like a bad rash!"
"And they took our score!" Meowth growled, his claws digging into the edge of the car. "We had the Meteonite in our hands!"
Jessie's foot slammed harder on the gas, bringing them even closer to Cilan's vehicle. Her piercing blue eyes burned with rage as she shouted, "Do you three have any idea how long we've been working on this operation?! How dare you mess with us again?!"
Cilan's emerald gaze flickered toward her for only a split second before he refocused on the road. His grip on the wheel remained steady, his tone calm but firm. "Oh, we dare," he said smoothly, "because somebody has to put an end to your criminal streak."
Jessie's face twisted with fury. "Tch! You think you're some hero, do you?! We stole that fair and square!"
Chili snorted from the passenger seat, tossing a glance back at them. "Pfft, fair and square? You mean you cheated, stole, and schemed for it? Yeah, totally fair."
James' eye twitched, his frustration reaching its limit. "It was meant for the boss!" he shouted, his voice filled with bitter resentment. "Do you have any idea how important that thing is?!"
Ash clenched his jaw. "I don't care who it was meant for," he shot back, his amber eyes narrowing. "You're not keeping it."
"Oh yeah?" Meowth sneered, his claws tightening on the roll bar as a dangerous smirk formed on his face. "We'll just see about that..."
Ash caught the look in Meowth's eyes, but before he could react, Cilan suddenly yanked the wheel, swerving the car sharply into a narrow side street.
"They cut us off!" Meowth yowled, gripping the back of his seat to avoid flying out.
Jessie slammed her palm against the dashboard, seething. "Ohhh, that's IT! I don't care what it takes, we're getting that case back!"
James exhaled sharply through his nose, nodding firmly. "Agreed. This time, they won't get away so easily."
Jessie's grip on the wheel tightened as she gunned the accelerator, their vehicle screeching around a corner as they fought to catch up.
The roar of engines filled the air as Jessie's stolen convertible screeched back onto their tail, the black vehicle now only inches from Cilan's red sports car. The tension was palpable, the city lights blurring as both cars tore through the streets of Lumiose, weaving between traffic like two predators locked in a deadly pursuit.
Jessie's face was twisted in frustration, her grip on the wheel tight as she jerked her car closer, ramming the side of Cilan's with a sudden slam!
"Gah!" Ash's body jolted from the impact, his arms tightening around the Meteonite case.
Cilan, however, remained eerily calm, his hands steady on the wheel as he simply smirked, ignoring them.
James leaned out of the passenger side, teeth clenched, eyes burning with frustration. "Give Us Back That Case!" he bellowed, his voice nearly drowned out by the roaring engines.
Cilan's expression didn't change.
"THAT'S IT!" Meowth snarled from the backseat, his slitted eyes gleaming with rage. He crouched down, muscles tensed, before springing into the air with feline grace.
"Give us. The. CASE!" he screeched, latching onto the back of Cilan's car.
Ash's eyes widened as Meowth's claws dug into the frame. "Whoaâ!"
Before he could react, Meowth lunged, his paws snatching at the case.
"Oh no you don't!" Chili growled, his instincts kicking in as he thrust his arm out, shoving Meowth back.
But Meowth was persistent. The feline's sharp claws hooked onto the edge of the seat, and with a feral grunt, he swung himself forward again, nearly tearing the case out of Ash's grip.
Ash gritted his teeth, twisting his body away as he and Chili grappled with the scrappy Pokémon, each second bringing Meowth closer to snatching the prize.
For a split second, Meowth's fingers brushed the caseâ
âUntil Chili drove his elbow straight into Meowth's face.
"HURKâ!" Meowth let out a strangled yowl as his head snapped back, his grip faltering. His body tilted, nearly slipping off the carâ
But his claws just barely managed to hook onto the door handle, leaving him dangling precariously mid-drive. Cilan finally turned his gaze toward the struggling feline, a glint of mischief in his emerald eyes. His lips curled into a dangerous smirk.
Meowth's pupils shrunk as he saw Cilan's hand casually move toward the door handle.
CLICK.
The driver's door swung open. Cilan was now driving the car with the driver's door wide open, Meowth hanging on for dear life.
"NYAAAAAAAAHHHHH!" Meowth let out a horrified wail as his grip slipped, his body whipping wildly in the wind, now dangling from the very edge of the speeding vehicle.
His panicked yowls echoed through the streets as he kicked his little legs, his tail thrashing desperately.
Jessie and James gasped, watching in horror.
"MEOWTH!" James shouted, reaching out.
Jessie gritted her teeth, slamming the gas pedal even harder. "Hang on, you flea-ridden furball!" she yelled. "We're coming for you!"
But Cilan's smirk never wavered as he held the door open, watching Meowth dangle for dear life.
Meowth's panicked yowls pierced through the night as he flailed wildly, the wind whipping at his fur as he dangled helplessly from the side of Cilan's speeding car.
Jessie and James' eyes widened in horror as they spotted something up aheadâ
An oncoming truck.
The massive vehicle barreled toward them, its horn blaring as its headlights flooded the road with blinding light.
James lunged forward, stretching his arm as far as he could. "GRAB ON!"
Meowth desperately reached out, their fingers brushingâ
With a final desperate lunge, James snatched Meowth by the scruff of his neck and yanked him back into their car just before the massive truck roared past in a deafening blur of metal and wind.
Meowth landed face-first onto James' lap, his little chest heaving as he gasped for air.
James gritted his teeth, fixing his hat. "They think they can escape? Think again!"
Jessie shoved the gearshift forward, tires squealing as their vehicle tore after them once more.
Cilan's red sports car screeched to a halt near the dimly lit docks in a discreet part of Lumiose City. The area was deserted, save for the occasional flickering lamppost casting long, eerie shadows over the stacks of shipping containers.
Cilan leaned back in his seat, a satisfied smirk creeping onto his face. "That was exhilarating," he mused, fingers drumming against the steering wheel.
Chili let out a breath, still buzzing from the chase. "Man, I haven't had this much fun since we battled that crazy gym challenger with a Scrafty!"
Ash, still clutching the Meteonite case, shot Cilan a sharp look. "Fun? That was insane!"
Cilan simply chuckled darkly in response, his emerald eyes gleaming. "Insanity and excitement are often two sides of the same coin, my friend."
But before Ash could retortâ
The distant roar of an approaching engine made all three of them snap their heads toward the entrance of the docks.
Jessie's stolen convertible came screeching onto the scene, its tires skidding against the pavement as she slammed the brakes.
The moment the car stopped, Jessie and James flung their doors open and stormed out, their faces twisted with unfiltered rage. Meowth, still a little wobbly from his near-death experience, staggered behind them.
Cilan, Chili, and Ash instinctively stepped away from the car, standing their ground as the fuming trio closed in on them.
Jessie's eyes blazed with fury as she pointed a shaking finger at them. "You absoluteâslimyâSNAKES!" she shrieked.
James adjusted his coat with a huff, his usual prim demeanor cracked by his simmering anger. "Do you three have ANY idea how much trouble you've caused us?!"
Meowth hissed, still rubbing his sore face from Chili's elbow. "Yeah! That's OUR Meteonite! Hand it over before I make ya regret it!"
Cilan, unbothered as ever, simply crossed his arms and gave them an amused smirk. "My, my... what an awfully emotional reaction for a bunch of so-called professionals."
Jessie's eye twitched. "You..."
Ash, stepping up beside Cilan, tightened his grip on the case and glared at them. "You really think we're just gonna give it back to you?"
James scoffed, his hands balling into fists. "You don't know what you're messing with, kid!"
Cilan's smirk widened, his gaze sharp. "Oh, I think we know exactly what we're dealing with... and that's precisely why we're keeping it far, far away from the likes of you."
The air between them was thick with tension, both sides standing their ground, neither willing to back down.
The tense silence was shattered in an instant.
With a feral growl, Jessie lunged forward like a striking Seviper, her fingers snatching the Meteonite case from Cilan's grasp in one swift motion.
Cilan's composed expression snapped, his voice sharp as a blade. "Heyâgive that back!" he barked, reaching for her, but she was already pivoting away.
A smug smirk curled on Jessie's lips. "Too slow, Connoisseur!" she taunted before hurling the case to James.
James caught it effortlessly, adjusting his grip with a flourish.
Before Cilan could make another move, James tossed the case into the airâ
Meowth, agile as ever, leaped up and snagged it mid-air, landing smoothly on all fours. He grinned, his sharp little teeth glistening under the dock lights, zigzagging between Ash and Chili, making a mockery of their efforts to grab him.
Cilan's eye twitched. His patience was gone.
"Alright... no more games."
His voice was low, cold, and dangerously steady. His hand moved, slipping into the inner pocket of his waistcoatâclose to his chest.
Jessie and James froze.
Even Ash, ever the fearless one, felt his stomach tighten as he watched the motion unfold.
Meowth's pupils shrank. He gasped, his breath catching in his throat.
"NoâDON'T!" he pleaded, his voice breaking with something close to fear.
Cilan's fingers wrapped around something within his waistcoat. His grip tightened.
Thenâ
A blinding beam of light flooded the docks from above, deafening whirr of helicopter blades roared through the air.
A booming voice, laced with authority and finality, echoed down from loudspeakers.
"THIS IS THE FBI! YOU ARE SURROUNDED! GET ON THE GROUNDâNOW!"
The world stood still.
Jessie's smug expression vanished, her eyes widening in pure shock.
James' grip on the case loosened, his breath hitching.
Meowth staggered, his ears flattening as he stared up at the approaching helicopter, its searchlight fixated directly on them.
Cilan did not move. His hand was still inside his waistcoat.
Chili leaned closer to Cilan, his voice barely above a whisper, yet laced with a rare nervousness.
"What do we do?"
Cilan didn't answer. His eyes remained locked on the FBI agents closing in, his mind calculating a way out of this.
But before the brothers could so much as twitch, a panicked shriek tore through the air.
"RETREAT!" Jessie screeched, whirling on her heel.
"Legs, don't fail us now!" James yelped, already scrambling toward the edge of the docks.
"Forget da dramatics, MOVE!" Meowth hissed, the Meteonite case clutched tightly in his furry paws.
In one desperate motion, the trio leaped onto a nearby motorboat, which was conveniently tied up at the docks. Jessie shoved the engine into gear, the boat roaring to life as it began to speed away from the scene.
One of the FBI agents, a burly man with deadly precision in his stance, lowered his binoculars. His lips pressed into a thin line as he watched Team Rocket's futile attempt at escape.
He muttered one simple word.
"Smoke 'em."
Without hesitation, another agentâhis face impassive, his movements preciseâswung a massive bazooka off his shoulder, adjusting his aim.
A low hum filled the air as his finger tightened on the trigger.
Thenâ
A thunderous BOOM ripped through the docks.
The projectile sliced through the night sky, tearing toward the escaping boat like a predator locking onto its prey.
Jessie barely had time to glance over her shoulder before her eyes bulged in horror.
The rocket made direct contact with the boat's engine.
A blinding explosion erupted into the sky, engulfing the entire vessel in a fiery inferno. The force sent Jessie, James, and Meowth screaming as they were hurled into the air.
A twinkle of their silhouettes faded into the night as they disappeared into the sky.
A faint ping echoed as something metallic hit the water below.
The Meteonite case.
Gone.
Later...
Cilan had a lengthy discussion with one of the FBI agents, going over everything that had transpired. Despite his frustration, the situation was ultimately calmed and resolved. The agents assured him that they would monitor the area for any signs of the Meteonite, though that did little to ease Cilan's anger. He stood rigid, his hands clenched into tight fists, his usual composed demeanor barely holding together as the reality of their failure sank in.
Meanwhile, Ash remained silent, standing slightly behind Chili. His breathing was still uneven, his heart only now beginning to settle after the chaos. It had been a long time since he had felt that kind of adrenaline rushâthe high-speed chase, the confrontation, the sheer tension of it all. He was somewhat shaken but relieved that it was over. Even so, a part of him couldn't shake the feeling that this wouldn't be the last time he'd be caught up in something this dangerous.
A/N:Â No, this wasn't the crisis that was mentioned earlier in the story. This is only the beginning. Team Rocket will obviously make a comeback. But it is not over. No, it was far from over...
