The stars dotted the night sky as Ash finally stepped through the front door of his house. The battle against Clemont had drained him, both physically and mentally, but despite the exhaustion settling in his bones, there was a small, satisfied smile on his face.
He had won his fifth badge.
More than thatâhe had made a new friend in Clemont. The Lumiose Gym Leader had proven to be a brilliant and worthy opponent, and after their intense battle, Ash could confidently say he respected him. The weight of the past weekâthe school incident, his mother's disappointmentâfelt just a little lighter.
As Ash shut the door behind him, the warm glow of the living room lights greeted him, along with the soft, familiar voice of his mother.
"Ash, you're home late," Delia said, looking up from the kitchen. She wasn't angry, but there was a hint of concern in her voice. "Where have you been all this time?"
Ash set his backpack down and rubbed the back of his head. "Had a Gym battle."
Delia raised an eyebrow, then smiled, her expression softening. "A Gym battle?"
Ash nodded, feeling a small swell of pride in his chest. "Yeah. Against Clemont, the Lumiose Gym Leader." He pulled the Voltage Badge from his pocket and held it up for her to see. "And I won."
Delia walked over and gently took the badge from his hand, examining it with an approving nod. "Another one, huh?" She handed it back to him with a small chuckle. "Well, that's my Ash. You never stop pushing forward."
Ash smiled, pocketing the badge again. "Yeah... I guess not."
His mother's gaze lingered on him for a moment, as if searching for something beneath his usual confident exterior. She had noticed how off he had been since the school incident. How something in his demeanor had changed. But now, seeing him not weighed down by frustration or disappointment, she chose to leave it be.
"You must be exhausted," she finally said. "Go get some rest. Tomorrow's another day."
Ash nodded. "Yeah... I think I will."
Ash climbed the stairs to his room, shutting the door behind him before flopping onto his bed, arms spread wide. His muscles ached, but it was a good ache. The kind that reminded him that he had given everything he had on the battlefield today.
As he lay there, staring up at the ceiling, his thoughts drifted.
Tomorrow was Friday.
Another day of school. Another day of dealing with everythingâthe people, the rumors, the weird tension in the air whenever certain classmates looked at him.
But tonight, those worries felt distant.
Tonight, he let his mind wander to what came next. Another Gym. Another battle. Another step toward his ultimate goal.
With that, exhaustion finally took over, and Ash drifted off to sleep
â
The warm glow of the morning sun barely registered to Ash as he stepped onto campus, his mind still lingering on the echoes of yesterday's battle. His body felt sore, a reminder of the intensity he and his Pokémon had endured. Pikachu, exhausted from cheering on the sidelines, was left at home to restâsomething Ash wasn't used to. It felt weird walking to school without his partner on his shoulder.
By the time he reached Professor Sycamore's classroom, he was already a few minutes late. With a quiet sigh, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The moment he did, a familiar voice filled the air.
"I'm just saying," Paul spoke in his usual composed but sharp tone, arms crossed as he leaned back in his chair. "Barry's been trying way too hard to copy Ash's style. But let's be realâit doesn't work for him. Ash's aggressive pressing and countering are instinctive. Barry? He's forcing it."
Barry, seated across from him, shot up from his chair, hands slamming onto the desk. "Hey! That's not true!" he huffed. "I just think Ash's tactics are cool, and besides, I've beaten plenty of guys using them!"
Trip smirked, adjusting his camera. "Yeah? How many of those wins were actually clean?"
Barry pointed at him, fuming. "Shut it, Trip! If you were half as bold as me, maybe you'd win more often!"
Paul scoffed, unfazed. "Boldness doesn't make up for sloppiness."
The conversation was already heating up when Ash quietly made his way toward his seat, catching the tail end of their discussion. He sat down without a word, dropping his bag onto the desk.
Gary, sitting beside him, nudged him with an elbow. "Yo, Sleeping Beauty, decide to grace us with your presence?"
Ash let out a small, tired grunt. "Overslept."
Serena, who had been listening to the conversation with concern, noticed Ash's expression. Something felt... off. He looked tiredânot just physically, but mentally.
Paul, finally noticing Ash, turned to him and raised an eyebrow. "You agree with me, right?"
Ash blinked. "Huh?"
Paul sighed. "That Barry's forcing your style. You make it look natural. He makes it lookâ"
"Like a total disaster," Trip finished for him, earning another glare from Barry.
Ash, still not fully engaged, shrugged. "I dunno. Barry's fast. If he makes it work for him, then that's his thing."
Barry beamed. "See?! Even Ashâ"
"But Paul's kinda right," Ash added bluntly. "You get reckless when you try too hard to rush things. If you wanna battle like me, you gotta learn to control it."
Barry's triumphant smile twitched. "O-Oh..."
Paul smirked, clearly satisfied with Ash's response.
Before Barry could retort, Professor Sycamore clapped his hands. "Marvelous! Now that our late student has joined us," he said, casting a playful glance at Ash, "let's begin today's lesson!"
As the class settled in, Serena glanced back at Ash again. He was here, but his mind seemed elsewhere. Something was bothering him, and she couldn't help but worry.
As Professor Sycamore launched into his lesson, Serena's eyes drifted toward Ash. He was slumped in his seat, his usual spark somewhat dimmed, his eyes unfocused. A small frown tugged at her lips. She knew something was off.
Unable to shake the feeling, Serena gently tapped Ash on the shoulder. "Hey, Ash," she said softly, her voice filled with concern. "Is everything okay? You look a little... tired."
Ash blinked and turned to face her, his expression somewhat distant at first. "Huh? Oh, yeah, I'm fine, Serena." He gave her a weak smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Just, you know, a long day yesterday. Nothing to worry about."
Serena didn't buy it. She leaned in closer, her brow furrowing. "You sure? You've got those tired eyes again. You can talk to me, you know." Her tone was warm, reassuring, the kind that made Ash feel comfortable yet somehow uneasy.
Ash scratched the back of his head, looking away. "Really, it's nothing. Just... a lot on my mind, I guess." He waved it off, though his body language screamed otherwise.
Serena's concern deepened. "Ash, you don't have to hide it from me. You know I'm here for you, right?" She leaned forward a little more, her gaze softening. "You've been through a lot recently. You don't have to carry all that by yourself."
Ash shifted in his seat, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I know, I know, I'm justâ" He cut himself off, not entirely sure how to explain. He wasn't used to someone caring this much.
Serena smiled gently, sensing his discomfort. "I'm not asking for a big explanation, Ash. I just want to make sure you're okay. You can be honest with me, alright?"
For a split second, Ash was quiet, as if the words were right there but stuck. "I'm just a little tired, I guess. It's nothing big." He managed a small grin, though it wasn't convincing.
Serena could tell he wasn't telling her the whole truth, but she decided to leave it at that for now. "Okay, well, if you ever need someone to talk to... or just take a break from everything, I'm here."
Ash nodded, grateful for her understanding. "Thanks, Serena." He gave her a grin, though it still felt a little forced.
Serena beamed back at him, always ready to offer a listening ear, but her heart ached seeing him so distant. She knew there was more to it than he was letting on, but for now, all she could do was offer him the reassurance he needed.
After Professor Sycamore's class was dismissed, Ash gathered his things slowly, still feeling a bit tired from yesterday's events. As he stood up, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Well, well, if it isn't the famous Ash Ketchum," Miette's voice rang out, smooth and teasing. She sauntered up to him with a playful smile, her short blue hair bouncing with each step.
Ash blinked, slightly caught off guard, but he gave a polite nod. "Uh, hey, Miette."
Miette leaned in just a bit closer, her eyes sparkling mischievously. "I've been hearing all about you and your little gym battle. Quite the spectacle, Ashy-boy. I'm impressed." Her tone was light, but there was an unmistakable flirtation laced into her words.
Behind her, Ursula stood with her arms crossed, watching the scene with an amused smile. "Careful, Miette. Don't get too attached. He's a lot more trouble than he looks."
Ash felt a bit uncomfortable under Miette's gaze but tried to hide it. "It was nothing, really... just another day, you know?"
Miette's lips curled into a teasing grin. "Oh, I don't think so, Ash. You've got a reputation now, and I like a good challenge. Maybe I'll see you around sometime, hm?" She tossed a playful wink in his direction.
Serena, who had been watching from a distance, couldn't help but feel a little twinge of jealousy. She clenched her fists subtly at her sides, though she tried to hide it.
"Ugh," she muttered under her breath, though it was loud enough for Dawn, Misty, and May to overhear. "She's just... always trying to get attention."
Dawn smiled sympathetically at Serena. "Don't worry about it, Serena. Ash doesn't seem like the kind of guy to fall for her games."
Serena nodded, trying to brush it off. "Yeah, you're probably right. But she's really pushing it..."
Meanwhile, Ash looked back at Miette, unsure how to respond. "I'll see you around, I guess." His tone was neutral, though his face remained slightly flushed from the attention.
Miette smiled sweetly and took a step back, her gaze still lingering on him for a second longer than necessary. "Don't keep me waiting too long, Ash. I'm not used to boys turning me down."
Ash scratched the back of his head nervously. "Uh... okay then," he mumbled, before quickly turning to join the others, who were already beginning to walk away.
Serena watched Ash go, her heart racing slightly, though she was determined to keep her cool. She'd show Miette that Ash was someone worth more than just teasing.
During lunch...
The bustling hallways of the school were filled with students heading toward their next destination. Ash, walking alone as usual, was making his way to the cafeteria, the sounds of chatter and laughter echoing through the corridors. His mind was still a bit clouded, the lingering weight of the events from the previous day hanging over him.
Just as he rounded a corner, he nearly bumped into someone. Looking up, he froze.
It was Principal Lysandre, standing tall with his usual stern expression. His sharp eyes locked onto Ash, and for a moment, the entire hallway seemed to quiet down. Ash's stomach twisted uneasily at the sudden confrontation.
"Ah, Ash Ketchum," Lysandre's voice was calm but authoritative. "I trust you've been keeping out of trouble recently?"
Ash opened his mouth, but the words stuck in his throat. His gaze dropped slightly, avoiding eye contact. "I, uh... yeah, I've been fine."
Lysandre raised an eyebrow, a faint trace of skepticism in his eyes. "Is that so?" he said, his voice cold, as if he could see right through Ash's attempt to act casual. "I hope that 'fine' includes staying out of conflicts. After all, I'm sure you'd agree that your recent actions have caused quite the disturbance."
Ash shifted awkwardly on his feet, his hands tucked into his pockets. "Yeah, I guess... I'm sorry about that, Principal."
Lysandre took a slow breath, seeming to weigh his words carefully. Then he spoke again, this time with a bit more finality in his tone. "I've arranged for you to begin school counseling next week. You've been given an opportunity to make better choices, Ash, but if you can't keep your cool, we may need to consider further steps."
Ash's heart sank. He hadn't expected it to be this serious, but he understood where Lysandre was coming from. He knew his actions weren't exactly exemplary. The thought of the counseling session wasn't exactly reassuring either.
"I'll... I'll be there, sir," Ash said, his voice a little quieter now. He couldn't help but feel like the weight of everything was catching up to him.
Lysandre nodded sharply. "Good. I trust you'll make the most of this opportunity." He gave Ash one last look, his piercing gaze softening just a bit. "I hope you realize the importance of learning how to handle your frustrations. You're better than this, Ash."
Ash didn't respond at first, taking in the words. After a long pause, he nodded.
"Understood, Principal Lysandre."
With that, Lysandre gave him a curt nod and walked away, leaving Ash standing in the hallway alone. The sound of his footsteps echoed faintly as he disappeared around the corner, leaving Ash with a deep, lingering sense of disappointment and reflection. The day ahead felt a little heavier now, but maybe, just maybe, he could start to turn things around.
Taking a deep breath, Ash continued on his way to the cafeteria, his mind already turning over the upcoming counseling and what it might mean for him. Maybe it's time to stop running away from what I've done.
The cafeteria was buzzing with activity as students piled in, grabbing their lunches and chatting amongst themselves. Ash, still tired but feeling slightly better after the school counseling discussion with Lysandre, had opted to sit away from the usual group today. He made his way over to Clemont's table, the shy, awkward boy sitting with a tray of food in front of him, looking up in surprise as Ash sat down across from him.
"Hey, Ash!" Clemont greeted with a warm, slightly nervous smile. "Did you sleep well after our battle yesterday?"
Ash sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I did... but I couldn't stop thinking about the battle," he admitted, taking a bite of his sandwich. "It was intense, huh?"
Clemont's eyes lit up, clearly excited. "It sure was! You and your Krookodile were amazing. I honestly wasn't expecting you to handle my Heliolisk so easily."
Ash chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "Krookodile's strong, but I've gotta admit, I underestimated your Luxray. That thing's quick."
Clemont smiled sheepishly, looking down at his food. "Yeah, Luxray's been with me for a long time. He's a great partner." He glanced up at Ash. "But youâyour Frogadier was unbelievable. I've never seen speed like that before. It was a real pleasure seeing it in action."
Ash blushed a bit at the compliment, rubbing the back of his neck. "Thanks, Clemont. It's just... the way we've trained. Frogadier's not just fast, he's smart, too."
"Well, whatever you're doing, it's definitely working." Clemont paused, then leaned in a little closer, a bit more excited. "I was actually thinking, maybe we could do some training together sometime. It could be fun!"
Ash smiled, glad to be talking to someone like Clemont. "That'd be cool. I'll let you know when I have the time."
As they continued chatting, Gary and Paul, sitting a few tables away, couldn't help but notice Ash's absence from the usual crew. Gary, ever observant and smug, raised an eyebrow when he spotted Ash sitting with Clemont.
"Well, well," Gary muttered, casting a glance at Paul, who barely looked up from his food. "Looks like Ash is hanging out with the 'nerd' today. What's that all about?"
Paul's sharp eyes narrowed, and he let out a low scoff. "It's none of our business. Let him be."
Gary snorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, sure, but it's a little weird, don't you think? First, he's avoiding the group, now he's buddying up with the guy who builds robots." He shook his head, clearly unimpressed. "I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that's not how Ash normally is."
Paul's disinterested expression softened a little, but he didn't say anything more. Gary leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms, but he couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was off. He wasn't sure why it bothered him, but it did.
Meanwhile, Serena, Dawn, and the rest of the girls noticed the odd pairing of Ash and Clemont, but they weren't as quick to judge. Serena's gaze softened as she watched the two of them laughing and chatting, her worry for Ash lingering.
"Looks like Ash is getting along with Clemont," Dawn observed, her voice light.
Serena nodded, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, it's nice to see him opening up a bit more. Maybe they can help each other out."
"Do you think he's alright?" May asked, her brow furrowed slightly.
"I hope so," Serena murmured, watching Ash out of the corner of her eye. "He's been through a lot lately."
Meanwhile, Misty, who had been observing from another table, turned to Iris. "It's nice that Ash has someone to talk to, but I wonder if he's just avoiding the rest of us."
Iris shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Ash's a mystery sometimes, but it's probably nothing. He'll be fine."
The boys at the other table, still not entirely convinced, kept throwing side glances at Ash and Clemont's table. Gary muttered, "It's like he's ignoring us."
"Let him do what he wants," Paul said, clearly uninterested, and the conversation ended there.
Back at Clemont and Ash's table, Ash smiled, feeling a little more at ease. The worries from the day before seemed a little further away now. He took another bite of his sandwich and looked up at Clemont, glad to be having this quiet moment.
"You know, Clemont," Ash said thoughtfully, "I think we could make a good team."
Clemont's eyes widened, a huge grin breaking across his face. "You really think so?"
Ash nodded, his voice firm. "Yeah. I'm looking forward to seeing where we can go from here."
The two shared a smile, the beginning of a solid friendship forged through their shared love of battling and growth.
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. Students filed out of the cafeteria, some heading to the next class, while others loitered in the hallways, chatting away. Ash, feeling slightly refreshed from his conversation with Clemont, made his way down the hallway when he felt a soft buzz from his wrist.
He looked down to see his Xtransciever blinking, a call coming through. With a quick flick of his wrist, he answered it. The face of Cilan, his long-time friend and a skilled Pokémon Connoisseur, appeared on the screen.
"Hey, Cilan! What's up?" Ash asked, his voice a little more cheerful than it had been earlier in the day.
"Ah, Ash!" Cilan's face brightened with a smile. "I'm glad I caught you. There's something important I need to tell you. My brothers and I... we've managed to track down Team Rocket."
Ash's expression immediately turned serious. "Team Rocket?" he echoed, his voice dropping slightly. "What are they up to now?"
Cilan's face darkened with concern. "They've got their hands on the Meteonite. We've been keeping an eye on their movements, and it looks like they're planning something big. My brothers, Chili and Cress, have located their hideout, and we need to act quickly."
Ash's eyes narrowed in determination. "I'm in. What do you need me to do?"
Cilan smiled, grateful for Ash's willingness to help. "We'll need your strength, Ash. The three of us can handle ourselves, but we'll be much more effective if you join us. The plan is to retrieve the Meteonite and make sure it doesn't fall into their hands."
"I'm there," Ash said immediately, a fire in his eyes. "What time?"
"It'll be tonight," Cilan replied, adjusting his glasses. "We've already set the plan in motion. I'll send you the details, but I need to know you're ready."
Ash's lips curved into a confident grin. "You bet I am. I'll meet you later tonight. Let's show Team Rocket they messed with the wrong people."
Cilan chuckled lightly. "I knew I could count on you, Ash. I'll see you tonight. And make sure you're ready for whatever comes our way."
With a final nod, the Xtransciever call ended, and Ash tucked the device back on his wrist. His mind raced as he thought about what Cilan had said. Team Rocket had the Meteonite, and they were up to no good. It was up to him and Cilan to stop them before it was too late.
The familiar excitement of a new challenge stirred in Ash's chest. He couldn't wait for tonight's mission.
