Part 38

The 'Outcast' - First Year2,410 words~13 min read

The moment Ash stepped off the bus, the familiar hum of Sycamore High's morning rush surrounded him—students chatting in clusters, lockers slamming shut, the occasional sound of Pokémon cries echoing through the halls.

But for Ash, it all felt... distant.

Pikachu clung to his shoulder, its little ears twitching as it glanced at its trainer with concern. Ash didn't say much—just walked forward, his hands stuffed into his pockets, his dark eyes staring blankly ahead. His mind was still stuck in the past—last night's conversation with his mother, the principal's office, the fight.

"No more getting into trouble."

He had promised himself that. But it didn't erase the weight pressing down on him.

—

The moment he stepped into Professor Rowan's classroom, the heavy atmosphere only grew thicker.

The old professor stood at the front of the room, adjusting his thin-rimmed glasses with an air of sharp precision. His white lab coat was neatly pressed, his stern expression making it clear that he was a man who did not tolerate nonsense.

Ash barely had the energy to acknowledge his classmates as he slid into his seat.

At the front of the class, Barry, Trip, Paul, and Gary were already seated, chatting amongst themselves. Across the room, Serena, Dawn, Misty, and May sat together, but Serena's gaze flickered toward Ash almost immediately.

Her gaze softened with worry.

Ash had barely spoken to anyone since the incident yesterday, and it showed.

Barry leaned back in his chair, nudging Trip. "Man, it's kinda weird not having Calem around. Think he's losing his mind at home?"

Trip smirked. "Maybe he and Jack are at each other's throats again, just through texts this time."

Gary chuckled, but his eyes wandered toward Ash, who hadn't said a word.

Ash stared blankly at his desk, his fingers absently running over Pikachu's ears. He could feel the weight of everyone's eyes on him, but he just... didn't feel like talking.

Gary turned in his seat, lowering his voice. "Yo, Ash. You good, man?"

Ash blinked, then gave a slow nod. "Yeah... just tired."

Gary didn't look convinced, but before he could press further—

THUD.

Professor Rowan slammed a thick textbook onto his desk.

The entire class flinched.

"Enough talking." Rowan's deep, gravelly voice cut through the room like a blade. "We are here to learn, not gossip."

A few students straightened in their seats. Barry muttered, "Sheesh, lighten up, old man..." under his breath, earning a sharp glare from the professor.

Rowan adjusted his glasses, his piercing gaze sweeping over the class. "Now, open your books to page 146. Today, we discuss Pokémon evolutionary patterns."

As the class begrudgingly flipped their textbooks open, Serena sneaked another glance at Ash, her brow furrowed with concern.

He was still staring down at his desk. Completely checked out.

The morning dragged on.

Ash barely absorbed a word Professor Rowan said. Everything just felt heavy. He wasn't sure if it was the lack of sleep or the weight of yesterday's events still clinging to him like a shadow, but either way... he felt stuck.

Pikachu, sensing his trainer's gloom, let out a soft, reassuring "Pika..." nuzzling against his cheek.

Ash exhaled slowly. He had to pull himself together.

But at that moment?

He just didn't know how.

—

The deafening ring of the lunch bell signaled the long-awaited end of Professor Rowan's painfully dull class.

Students didn't hesitate—textbooks slammed shut, chairs scraped against the floor, and hushed whispers turned into full-blown chatter as everyone eagerly rushed out of the room.

Ash moved slower.

Pikachu hopped onto his shoulder as he lazily followed the crowd. The usual routine would've been to head to the cafeteria with the gang—but today? He wasn't feeling up for it.

Gary, however, wasn't about to let that slide.

"Yo, Ash!" Gary called from ahead, motioning toward him. "Hurry up, man. Lunch is already short enough without you dragging your feet."

Ash gave a half-hearted wave. "I'll catch up later."

Gary narrowed his eyes, unconvinced. Before he could press further, Trip and Barry nudged him along, dragging him into a conversation about Rowan's lecture.

Meanwhile, Serena lingered near the exit, her light blue, ocean-like eyes watching Ash with obvious concern.

She wanted to say something. To check on him.

But the moment she hesitated—he was gone.

—

The cafeteria buzzed with energy. Students laughed, traded Pokémon battle strategies, and debated over their food choices. The usual crew had already gathered at their table, save for two notable absences.

Barry stabbed at his food with a dramatic sigh. "Man, it really sucks not having Calem here. The guy was annoying, sure, but at least he gave Jack a run for his money."

Trip smirked. "Yeah. Now Jack thinks he owns the place."

Serena, who was only half-listening, rested her chin on her hand, her gaze subtly shifting around the cafeteria.

Looking for someone.

"Still thinking about Ash?" Leaf's knowing voice cut through her thoughts.

Serena nearly choked on air. "Wh-What? No! I was just—uh—"

Leaf smirked. "Come on, Serena. You've been stealing glances at the entrance since we sat down."

Serena flustered, her eyes flickering toward where Ash usually sat—except this time... his seat was empty.

She frowned.

Where did he go?

—

Ash sat at an isolated table in the farthest corner of the cafeteria, where the noise of the crowd was just distant murmurs.

Pikachu munched on a berry beside him, occasionally glancing up at its trainer. Ash poked at his food, his appetite nonexistent.

For the first time since he'd gotten to this school—he felt truly alone.

That was, until...

"U-Um... excuse me."

Ash blinked, looking up to see a nervous-looking boy with blonde hair, round glasses, and a blue jumpsuit. He fidgeted with his sleeves, glancing at the empty seat across from Ash.

"Would it... be okay if I sat here?"

Ash tilted his head slightly. It was rare for someone outside his usual group to approach him, but he wasn't about to turn the guy away.

"Uh, sure," Ash said, motioning for him to sit.

The boy let out a small breath of relief before setting his tray down. "Thanks. I, uh... I'm Clemont, by the way."

Ash nodded. "Ash. Ash Ketchum."

An awkward silence fell between them for a moment before Clemont cleared his throat. "You're... not sitting with your usual friends today?"

Ash exhaled through his nose. "Not feeling up for it."

Clemont nodded slowly, pushing his glasses up. "Yeah... I get that."

Ash glanced at him. "You don't sit with anyone?"

Clemont scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "Well... I do. I usually sit with Serena and the others, but..." He hesitated, leaning in slightly as if sharing a secret.

"I, uh... kinda have a minor fear of Paul."

Ash raised an eyebrow. "Paul?"

Clemont nodded, shuddering slightly. "He's... intimidating. I mean, don't get me wrong! I know he's not a bad guy, but he has that whole 'cold stare of doom' thing going on, and I just—yeah."

Ash blinked, before unexpectedly letting out a chuckle.

Clemont perked up. "What?"

"Nothing," Ash smirked faintly. "Just never thought I'd hear someone say they're afraid of Paul."

Clemont adjusted his glasses again. "I-I wouldn't say afraid—more like... mildly unsettled."

Ash shook his head, amused. The conversation wasn't much, but somehow, it was just enough to make the heavy weight on his shoulders feel a little lighter.

Pikachu, who had been listening quietly, let out a soft, approving, "Pika."

For the first time today—Ash actually picked up his fork and took a bite of his food.

Maybe this lunch wouldn't be so bad after all.

—

The hum of the cafeteria continued around them, but Ash and Clemont seemed to have found a bubble of peace in their quiet corner. Clemont had just finished telling Ash about his latest invention, a small mechanical device to help trainers organize their Poké Balls more efficiently. His voice was quiet but earnest, and Ash had to admire how passionate Clemont was about helping others through his inventions.

So, all this time, you've been building gadgets for Pokémon and trainers," Ash mused, taking another bite of his food. "But is there anything else you do? Like, do you have another job or something?"

Clemont shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable being the center of attention, but his voice remained steady. "Well... I do have another job, but it's not really something I talk about a lot." He hesitated, glancing around as if searching for the right words.

Ash, intrigued, raised an eyebrow. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

Clemont shifted again, his glasses catching the light as he exhaled. "Actually... I'm the Gym Leader of the Lumiose Gym."

Ash blinked. "Wait—what?" He leaned forward slightly, looking at Clemont with a mix of confusion and curiosity. "You're a Gym Leader?"

Clemont nodded, sheepishly looking at the floor. "I know it's probably not what you expected. I'm not very good at public speaking, and I get nervous easily, but I love being able to help trainers improve."

Ash's mind wandered back to his first day in Lumiose City. He remembered walking into the gym, excited to take on the challenge, only to be rejected by a robot. "Clembot," it had called out, saying Ash didn't have enough badges to battle. At the time, Ash did not have any badges, which meant he couldn't battle for a one.

A small frown tugged at Ash's lips as he thought back to the embarrassment.

He hadn't been able to challenge the Lumiose Gym until much later, when he had gained his fourth badge. But as soon as the memory came flooding back, it was quickly replaced by a new thought.

He had four badges now—thanks to the hard work he'd put in across Kalos.

"Hey, wait a minute..." Ash raised his head. "You're the one who created that robot, aren't you? The one that said I didn't have enough badges?"

Clemont's face turned a shade of red. "Oh no, you remember that?" He chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his neck. "I'm really sorry about that. Clembot was a bit overzealous with its job. I had no idea it would cause so much trouble. I'm sorry if it made you feel bad."

Ash smiled a little, understanding now. "It's fine. I get it. I didn't have all the badges then. But now, I do!" His voice brightened, a sense of pride bubbling up within him.

Clemont nodded eagerly. "That's great! I really respect that! And as a way to make up for the whole Clembot incident, how about we have a Gym Battle after school? I'd love to see what you've learned since then. Besides, I owe you for making things awkward in my gym..."

Ash's eyes lit up at the idea. "A Gym Battle? You mean it?"

Clemont nodded, his face softening with a sincere smile. "Of course. I'll be there, waiting for you. I know you'll do great."

Ash couldn't help but feel excited. He didn't expect to find such a cool new friend today, but here he was—sitting across from the Lumiose Gym Leader, talking about a battle. Clemont might be a little shy and awkward, but he was kind, and Ash could already see the potential for a great friendship.

"Alright, you've got yourself a battle!" Ash grinned, standing up a little straighter. "I'll be there! I won't disappoint you, Clemont!"

Clemont smiled back, relieved. "Thanks, Ash. I'm looking forward to it."

Pikachu cheered, giving a soft "Pika pika!" as it hopped up onto Ash's shoulder, as if agreeing wholeheartedly.

The two boys shared a moment of understanding, a new bond forming between them. Ash was no longer the lone boy trying to fit in. He now had a new friend—and a chance to prove himself again.

Ash wasn't sure what the future held, but for the first time in a while, he felt like he was on the right path.

And maybe, just maybe... he was starting to find his place here in Kalos after all.

—

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of another long school day, the halls of Sycamore High buzzed with students eager to head home or hang out with friends. But Ash had only one destination in mind.

He walked through the corridors without a word, hands stuffed into his pockets, Pikachu perched on his shoulder. Normally, Gary or Leaf would crack a joke, or Serena would find an excuse to walk with him—but today, he didn't give them the chance. He didn't even glance in their direction.

Serena furrowed her brows in concern. "He's been so distant today..." she murmured, watching as Ash slipped through the exit doors.

Gary crossed his arms, sighing. "Yeah, and that's not like him. You think he's still worked up over yesterday?"

Leaf exhaled, resting her hands on her hips. "No doubt about it. But, knowing Ash, he won't talk until he's ready."

The group shared uneasy looks, but none of them moved to follow. If Ash wanted space, they'd let him have it.

The golden hues of the setting sun bathed Lumiose City in a warm glow as Ash made his way through the bustling streets. Cars honked, people chattered, and the occasional Pokémon scurried by, but Ash remained unfazed. His thoughts were set on only one thing—his battle with Clemont.

Pikachu flicked its tail, sensing Ash's quiet intensity.

Pikachu flicked its tail, sensing Ash's quiet intensity.

"Pika?"

Ash glanced at his partner and offered a small smile. "I'm good, buddy. Just... focused."

The towering silhouette of Prism Tower loomed in the distance, its metallic frame shimmering as the lights of the city flickered on one by one. The very place that had once rejected him now stood before him again—but this time, he was ready.

As Ash stepped up to the grand entrance of the Lumiose Gym, the doors slid open with a quiet hiss. He clenched his fists, his tired eyes now filled with nothing but determination.

Tonight, he'd battle. Tonight, he'd push forward.

And no matter what, he wouldn't let himself fall behind.

A/N: To be honest I was going to just throw in the gym battle in this part, but it was going to be way too long of a part if I did. I will publish the gym battle between Ash and Clemont next time so I have more time to make it epic.
