Chapter 33 of 58

Part 33

The 'Outcast' - First Year2,284 words~12 min read

Paul, Gary, Calem, and Barry sat around their usual table in the cafeteria, with Ash as company. The Junior Cup battles had concluded for the day, and now, the group was taking it easy during lunch. Each trainer lost in their own thoughts about the events that had unfolded earlier.

"So, Ash," Barry began, leaning across the table with a grin, "I gotta say, you really pulled it off yesterday. Your battle against Remo was insane!" he exclaimed.

Ash grinned, scratching the back of his head. "Thanks, Barry! It was intense, but, Krookodile, Lucario, and Talonflame really gave it their all. I couldn't have done it without them!"

Paul, who had been quietly listening, gave a slight nod. "I'll admit, Ash, your strategy was solid. You didn't just rush in without thinking. Using Krookodile's speed to set up Lucario and Talonflame was smart. I didn't expect that from you."

As the conversation continued, the door to the cafeteria creaked open, and two boys stepped in. The first was a tall, blonde-haired boy, his face twisted in a scowl as his eyes fixed on the group. The second, a blue-haired boy, followed behind, looking more relaxed but still cautious.

The blonde-haired boy, Jack, marched toward the table with purpose. His eyes lingered on Calem for a moment before he spoke up, his voice dripping with annoyance. "Well, well, if it isn't Calem. I should've known you'd be here."

Calem raised an eyebrow, clearly uninterested, and replied, "Jack... What's up?"

Jack crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. His voice was sharp when he spoke again, as if he couldn't hold back his irritation any longer.

"Listen, Calem, stay out of my way," Jack snapped, his gaze hardening. "I don't want any more of your... competition around here."

Damian, standing beside Jack, sighed, clearly used to this side of his friend. "Jack, not this again. Calm down."

But Jack wasn't listening to him. His eyes never left Calem, his frustration only growing.

Calem smirked slightly, unfazed. "Her? You mean Leaf? You're acting like she belongs to you or something. Maybe you should chill out." Ash raised an eyebrow at the mention of his cousin's name but decided not to interfere.

Jack's expression darkened, and he took a step closer, lowering his voice. "I'm not joking, Calem. Stay out of my way, or we'll have a repeat of what happened last week."

Damian placed a hand on Jack's shoulder, trying to calm him down. "Jack, seriously, drop it. Leaf isn't some prize to fight over."

Ash, still confused, spoke up. "What's going on between you two?"

Jack glanced briefly at Ash, then back to Calem. "It's nothing. Just... stay away from her."

Truth to be told, once Jack found out Ash was related to Leaf and opposed no serious threat to his chances with Leaf, he stopped targeting him. Plus, he'd also heard about his triumph over Remo the other day and grew some mutual respect for the Raven haired trainer.

The tension at the table was palpable.

Jack's eyes narrowed. "Don't act like you didn't know exactly what you were doing, Calem. You're always trying to get under my skin."

Calem smirked, leaning back in his seat, unfazed. "Oh, I'm just speaking the truth. You act like Leaf is some kind of prize. Maybe if you stopped obsessing over her, you'd see that she makes her own decisions."

The words hit harder than expected, and Jack's face turned red with rage. His fists tightened. "What did you say?"

"Leaf doesn't need you to fight her battles for her," Calem continued, his tone casual, his smile still in place. "But I guess that's what you do best, right? Fight for attention."

Jack's temper finally snapped. Without warning, he lunged at Calem, his fists aimed at his face. "Shut up, Calem!" Jack shouted.

The cafeteria went dead silent in an instant. As Jack's fist swung toward Calem, Ash and Paul reacted at the same time, both jumping to their feet.

"Ash!" Paul barked, grabbing his arm as he tried to rush into the chaos. "Don't get involved! It's not worth it!"

Ash tried to pull Jack away, but Jack shook him off with a growl, his eyes filled with anger. "Stay out of this, Ash! This is between me and Calem!" He swung again, narrowly missing Calem's face.

Calem swiftly dodged, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You really need to calm down, Jack. Leaf doesn't care if you throw a tantrum every time something doesn't go your way."

"Enough!" Paul's voice rang out, sharp and commanding. He stepped forward, trying to stand between them before Jack could land another blow. "Both of you, stop it! This is embarrassing."

Jack shoved Paul aside. "I don't care! Calem's been asking for this!"

Before the situation could escalate further, a deep, authoritative voice interrupted.

"That's enough!"

Everyone froze at the sound of Lysandre's voice. The principal stood at the entrance of the cafeteria, his tall figure commanding attention. His sharp eyes scanned the group before locking onto Jack, who was still seething with anger.

Jack's face twisted with frustration, but he reluctantly lowered his fists. "This isn't over," he muttered under his breath.

Lysandre's gaze never wavered as he took a step forward, his presence causing the students around the room to fall into a tense silence.

"I've had enough of this behavior, Jack," Lysandre said, his voice calm but filled with authority. "Fighting in the cafeteria is unacceptable. Do you think I won't hold you accountable for this?" His tone was one of controlled fury, and his eyes burned with the weight of his words.

Jack clenched his jaw but didn't argue, the fight drained from him as he stood there, fists still shaking. Damian placed a hand on Jack's shoulder, urging him to calm down.

"You've got a lot of growing up to do," Lysandre continued, his gaze now turning to Calem. "And Calem, I suggest you be more careful with your words in the future. This isn't the place for your rivalry."

Calem shrugged nonchalantly, clearly unfazed. "I was just telling the truth. But I'll keep it in mind."

Lysandre gave him a sharp look. "I don't want to see this happen again. Both of you, report to my office after school. Understood?"

Jack's fists were still clenched, but he nodded curtly. "Yeah, fine."

Calem raised his hands in mock surrender. "No problem."

With that, Lysandre turned to leave, his eyes lingering on the students in the cafeteria before he disappeared through the door, leaving an almost tangible tension in the air.

The cafeteria slowly returned to its usual hum, but the fight had left a clear mark on the group. Barry leaned back in his chair, arms folded, his voice dripping with amusement.

"That got a little too intense," he said, flashing a grin.

Ash let out a sigh of relief, his hands still shaking slightly from the chaos. "Yeah, it's over for now, but I really didn't expect it to get that bad."

Paul rubbed his temples, clearly exhausted by the whole situation. "It's not over. That rivalry between them is far from finished."

Calem shot Jack a glance, who was still glaring at him from across the room. "You're right, Paul. I don't think Jack's going to let this slide anytime soon."

After school...

The sun had already started to set as Calem and Jack found themselves standing outside Principal Lysandre's office. Both boys had been quiet since the confrontation earlier, their nerves still on edge from the earlier chaos in the cafeteria. They had been sent to Lysandre's office after school, and now they were facing the consequences of their actions.

Calem crossed his arms, leaning against the wall, clearly trying to stay relaxed. Jack, on the other hand, was pacing, his hands still clenched into fists from the frustration that hadn't fully subsided. The tension between them was thick.

"Just... don't say anything stupid," Jack muttered under his breath, though his voice was still tinged with anger.

Calem looked at Jack, raising an eyebrow. "What? You think I'm going to say something stupid? I'm just here to hear what Lysandre has to say."

Jack's gaze darkened. "I'm not the one who started all of this, Calem."

"Well, you're the one who couldn't keep it in check," Calem shot back with a shrug. "But whatever. Let's just get this over with."

Before Jack could respond, the door to Lysandre's office creaked open, and Principal Lysandre himself stepped out. His presence immediately commanded attention. The tall, imposing man looked at the boys for a long moment before motioning for them to enter.

"Come in," Lysandre said, his voice calm but stern. "We need to have a conversation about what happened earlier."

Calem and Jack exchanged one last glance before walking into the office. They sat down in the two chairs across from Lysandre's desk, both of them remaining silent, though their bodies were still tense from the confrontation.

Lysandre closed the door behind them and took his seat behind the desk, his sharp eyes locking onto both boys.

"I'm not going to pretend I didn't hear what happened today," Lysandre began, his voice steady. "But I am going to tell you both that what you did—fighting in the cafeteria—was completely unacceptable. Do you understand that?"

Jack shifted uncomfortably in his seat, looking away. "Yeah, I get it. But Calem—"

Lysandre raised a hand, silencing Jack immediately. "I'm not here to point fingers, Jack. And I'm not here to excuse anyone's behavior. What I'm here to do is help you understand why this matters."

He leaned forward slightly, his gaze intense.

"Both of you are incredibly talented individuals. You've proven that through your skills, your strength, and your abilities. But none of that matters if you can't handle your emotions," Lysandre continued, his voice calm but carrying weight. "Fighting—acting out like you did today—shows that you're not in control of yourselves. And if you can't control your emotions, you'll never truly be in control of your future."

Calem, who had been silent up until that point, opened his mouth to say something but was cut off when Lysandre raised his hand again.

"Calem," Lysandre said, his tone now more pointed, "you might think you're just speaking the truth. But words matter. When you deliberately provoke someone, it doesn't matter if you think it's just playful banter or the truth. You're still inciting conflict, and that is no different from throwing the first punch."

Calem's expression softened, and he shifted slightly in his chair, clearly absorbing Lysandre's words.

"And Jack," Lysandre continued, his gaze now directed at the blonde-haired boy, "anger can be powerful, but it's also dangerous. You've let your jealousy and frustration blind you. You're so focused on Calem, on what you think he's doing to 'steal' something from you, that you can't even see what you're really fighting for."

Jack clenched his jaw but didn't say anything. His face was tight, but Lysandre's words were starting to sink in.

Lysandre's expression remained calm but firm. "I understand that rivalry between the two of you has been building for a while. But let me make this clear: whatever it is you're fighting for—it isn't worth tearing yourselves apart over. Not now, not ever."

There was a long pause before Lysandre leaned back in his chair, his gaze softening just slightly. "You both have something special. But if you let your pride and your anger take the lead, you'll waste it. You'll throw it all away."

The silence in the room stretched, neither boy daring to speak. Jack seemed to be processing the principal's words, while Calem remained quiet, his expression thoughtful.

Lysandre finally broke the silence, his tone now slightly less severe. "I'm not saying you need to be friends, but you do need to learn how to coexist. You're here for a reason, both of you. And if you can't figure out how to handle your rivalry with maturity, then you're both going to continue making mistakes like this."

Calem finally spoke up, his voice more subdued than usual. "I get it. I didn't mean to push Jack that far. I just... I don't know. I guess I didn't think about how it would affect him."

Jack's gaze softened slightly, though his stubbornness was still evident. "And I... I shouldn't have let it get to me. I don't know why I let you get under my skin so much, Calem."

Lysandre nodded, a small but approving look crossing his face. "Good. I'm glad to hear that. Now, the next time something like this happens, I expect you both to walk away before it goes any further."

The tension in the room had lightened somewhat, but Lysandre's next words were still serious.

"I'm not going to suspend either of you. But I'm keeping a close eye on you both. If I see another incident like this, there will be consequences. Understood?"

Both boys nodded, though Jack's nod was more reluctant than Calem's.

"Good," Lysandre said with a final, stern look. "Now, you're free to go. But remember this: you're here to learn. Don't let something as trivial as pride get in the way of that."

The boys stood up, and as they left Lysandre's office, they exchanged one last glance—this time with a faint hint of understanding between them.

Well the message from Principal Lysandre was clear: One more time they got into fight like that, they would both be suspended.

By the way in case you guys were wondering why I'm publishing quite a few chapters today, it's because most of these parts I already had finished, I just needed some time to edit them.
