CHASE'S POV
Visiting my worst day in all of the calendar. All other students were happy seeing their parents, but what? It's so f*king embarrassing.
"Can't you at least smile for me, honey?" Mum begged.
"I don't feel like seeing you. Get out of my school, you embarrass me," I said like I meant it. In truth, I did, but I wanted her to pay for ruining my life.
She slowly wiped a tear from the corner of her eye.
"What do you want from me?" she asked.
"I want you to f*** off," I said, and with that, my cheek stung. My eyes widened in shockâmy own mum had just hit me.
"See what you made me do, Chase. What is wrong with you? Why do you hate me so much?" she asked, her voice breaking at every word.
"Because you're a f***ing whore who can't even provide the father of her only child," I shouted in her face, and she flinched a bit in fear.
"I've had enough of your nonsense, Chase. When you're OK, I'll come back, but until then, suit yourself," she said, and with that, she got in her car, and the driver drove her off.
I hate my mum, and it's an understatement. I know I feel more than that towards her. If she knew that giving birth to me was going to ruin my life, maybe she should have aborted me. I don't know who my father is, and itâs a huge setback for me.
I wiped away my tears and hoped for something better. I want a bright light.
I wiped my tears and went up to my dorm room. Itâs not like I have a roommate to talk to; Michael is just there.
---
I watched her from afar, my angelâthe only girl I've ever loved with my whole heart. She was as gorgeous as heaven, and I wanted her for myself.
I walked up close to her. Today is the day I'm going to tell her how I feel about her. Her ginger hair just added a beautiful touch to her.
I had asked her to meet me at the lounge, and she was already here.
"Hi, Anna," I said, and she smiled upon seeing me; it was her usual innocent smile.
"Hey, C. Why did you call me here?" she asked.
"I wanted to tell you something, but I want you to have this first," I said, giving her a bouquet of flowers.
"Awww, thank you," she said, smelling them.
"So, about what you wanted to say?" she asked.
"Uhmm, that⦠I just wanted to let you know that I've never felt for anybody the way I feel for you. You make me feel complete, and the way you stand up against Dylan and Ryan is truly mesmerizing. I just wish we could be something more. I like you, and I wish you could be my girlfriend," I said, the words rolling off my tongue like the sweet words of poetry.
I looked at her, hoping for a positive reply. But what I got shocked me. The usual spark in her eyes was gone. She let out an evil laugh, and I was stunned.
She stood up, turning the bouquet toward me.
"Oh my God, now every d*** riffraff thinks they can have me, even Chase, the illegitimate b******," she said.
I was shocked, and my eyes widened.
"An...," I stammered, like I usually do.
"Look, Chase, you're cute and all, but trust me, I can't be with a guy who can't stand up for himself and can't even pronounce my name in one go," she said.
"Are you blaming me for being a stammerer?" I asked, heartbroken.
"If that's what you think, then so be it. Just because you do my homework for me doesn't make me indebted to you. And by the way, you chose to do them yourself," she said, catching her breath, then added as she checked her nails, "Oh God, boys are so tiring. Bye, tiny bear." She scattered my flowers on the floor and turned to leave.
I grabbed her arm forcefully. "Have you never felt anything for me?" I asked, teary-eyed, hoping to get a good answerâeven if only from her eyes.
"No, Chase. Not now, not ever," she said, her dark eyes cold.
She left with a wicked heart.
I was left with a broken one.
This is it. I can never be happy. I wasn't destined to be happy. I'm a screw-up; itâs all I'll ever be.

FREDDY'S POV
"You paint all the time; how about you take some time off and get yourself a girl?" she said. If only she knew that she was the only girl I'd ever want.
"Ash, can you please leave me alone and go play football or go kick some asses like you always do?" I said, trying to get her off my back. She was as tempting as she could already be.
"Freddy, I think it's time you told your family to open their own gallery. This is very good! I just hope you'll paint me one day," she said.
"Why should I paint you?" I asked, teasing. I paint her every month, but I donât have the guts to show her yet.
"Because I'm your best friend, you dimwit," she said with a smack to my head.
"Yeah, I'm used to you being abusive," I said, laughing.
"Such a superficial bimbo," she muttered under her breath.
"I heard that, Ash," I said.
"I wish she heard it instead," she said.
"Who?" I asked, still focused on my milkshake drawing.
"Anna Petros," she said.
"What did she do to you? You have a problem with everything and everybody, don't you?" I asked rhetorically.
"Nah, itâs just that I feel a bad vibe from her. Something about her irks me, and I do not like her brother one bit. I wonder what Dee sees in him; sheâs a nice girl," she said.
"You have your thoughts, but it's not your place to judge anybody, OK? She likes him because she likes him. Leave it at that," I said.
She smacked my head again. "Stop acting like a Mr. Know-It-All. Maybe you should talk to Dylan and Ryan like this one day," she said, teasing.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I'm used to their beatings and taunts; I'll do just fine," I assured her.
"OK, but I want some pizza. Letâs go get some," she said.
"OK, fine. Let's go, babe," I said, trying to get under her skin.
"If any guy calls me that, I'll personally chop his tongue off," she said.
"I take it back," I quickly replied.
"Better," she said, and we laughed it off.
I am glad that she is my best friend. She completes me, even if she doesn't know it. Iâve loved her since we were in middle school, and I canât take my love back, even if she wants me to.

HADIZAH'S POV
"Nicky, what's up?" Anna asked, and in truth, I had no intention of answering her. I was still trying to find out the truth.
"I need to head to class. Bye," I said, trying to leave.
"Youâve been avoiding me, and itâs getting annoying," she said.
"I'm not avoiding you; I just need my own space," I said.
"And by space, do you mean my sister told you something?" she asked.
"You know what? Fine. She told me that you're mentally unstable and that you've been trying to sabotage me since you got to this school," I said, confidence radiating off me.
"I knew she was going to say that. She's the one with the mental issues, not me," she said.
"Now who do I believe, you or your sister?" I asked, confused by everything.
"Please, believe me. Didnât you see what she did to Dylan the other dayâthe rat stuff in the cafeteria?" she said.
"I... I⦠I donât know," I said, frustrated.
"That's part of her symptoms; she instills fear in people. Iâm sorry you had to go through that because of her. Sheâs been like that ever since our mom died," she said.
"I'm sorry I doubted you, Anna. Iâve known you longer than her. I should have known better," I said.
"Itâs fine; it wasnât your fault. Let me walk you to class," she offered.
"Thanks. Letâs go," I accepted.
I am glad all of this has been cleared up. I canât believe I trusted Anne so easily. The way I was quick to judge another person was very un-Muslim-like, and I hope Allah forgives me.
When we got to the front of my classroom, I could already see Ava waving at me, and I smiled back.
"Say hi to Julian for me," she said.
I blushed and nodded my head, entering my class, and was glad to have these people around me.
