Achilles and Briseis entered the palace, stepping over the lifeless bodies scattered on the floor, leading them deeper into the eerie silence within. The absence of any signs of life created a haunting atmosphere, emphasizing the emptiness of the once vibrant place
Suddenly, a piercing scream shattered the stillness, propelling Achilles and Briseis up the staircase towards the source. As they emerged into the backyard, a tense confrontation unfolded before them. King Agamemnon, Menelaus, and a group of soldiers stood face to face with King Priam, Paris, and Helen. The lifeless form of Hector's beloved, Andromache, lay on the ground, a tragic witness to the unfolding chaos.
"You savages!" Lord Priam's voice thundered with anger and grief, his sword raised in defiance.
Paris, consumed by a storm of emotions, unleashed a fierce assault towards Agamemnon, driven by a mix of rage and desperation. The King's swift reflexes allowed him to deflect the attack, sending Paris crashing to the ground in a tumult of dust and debris.
"Finish him off, brother!" Agamemnon's commanding voice echoed through the chaos, urging Menelaus to deliver the final blow to Paris.
As the tension thickened in the air, Lady Helen's voice cut through the chaos like a beacon of reason and compassion. With a sense of urgency, she positioned herself between Menelaus and Paris, her words a plea for peace and sanity in the midst of the escalating conflict.
"Menelaus, please!" Her voice trembling. "This is not the path of kindness and honor you walk. Do not let that monster tarnish the light within you." Her eyes, filled with a mix of sorrow and resolve, locked onto Agamemnon with a raw display of pure disgust, condemning his ruthless thirst for bloodshed and vengeance.
Agamemnon's voice boomed with malice as he commanded his brother, his words dripping with venom and hatred. "Don't listen to this traitorous wench! This little shit caused all of this, brother! He took your wife and humiliated you! Kill him!" Menelaus, consumed by a fiery rage towards Paris, tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes fixed on the Prince with a deadly resolve.
In a swift and decisive move, Achilles sprang into action, his movements fluid and precise. With a fierce determination, he hurled his spear directly at Menelaus's raised sword, the impact shattering the blade in a resounding clash. Menelaus, frozen in disbelief, realized with a jolt how perilously close his hand had come to being severed off.
The golden spear continued its deadly trajectory with a deadly grace. It sliced through the air, piercing through the ranks of the twelve Spartan soldiers with a devastating force, bringing a sudden and tragic end to their lives in a swift and merciless strike.
With a fierce determination burning in her eyes, Briseis wasted no time in launching herself towards Agamemnon, driven by a deep-seated desire to bring an end to his life once and for all.
As the spear found its way back into Achilles' grasp, he approached Menelaus with a cautious yet resolute demeanor, their gazes locked in a silent exchange of tension and unspoken words.
"Stand down, Menelaus. I do not wish to bring harm upon you," Achilles's voice carried a tone of firm resolve, seeking to avoid further bloodshed.
Menelaus, unable to find words to match the turmoil within him, let his eyes convey the weight of his defeat and resignation. With a heavy heart, the King relinquished his broken sword, letting it fall to the ground with a clatter, before sinking to his knees in a gesture of surrender and acceptance of his fate.
"Just end it." Menelaus whispered softly.
Achilles, moved by a sense of compassion and understanding, knelt before the defeated King. Placing a reassuring hand on Menelaus's shoulder, Achilles spoke with a mix of empathy and respect.
"You were the only one brave enough to bring Patroklos' body back to me. I won't ever forget that. You are a man of honor who faltered in the grip of anger and love. Live on, King, and seek redemption for your choices," Achilles's words carried a weight of forgiveness and understanding. Having been in Menelaus's shoes before, he hoped to prevent another from succumbing to the same darkness.
Achilles rose to his feet as Helen approached to offer solace to the despondent Menelaus. She gave Achilles a slight smile, a sign of gratitude.
On the other side, Agamemnon's anguished cry pierced the air as Briseis, with a swift and daring move, managed to drive her blade into the King's thigh. However, her triumph was short-lived as Agamemnon seized her arm, swiftly unequipping the armor from her body, leaving her vulnerable and exposed before him.
Turning Briseis around, Agamemnon pressed his sword menacingly against her neck, halting Achilles in his tracks.
"What are you doing, brother!?" Agamemnon's voice thundered with tangible fury, his anger reverberating through the tense atmosphere. "Stand up and fight!"
Yet, Menelaus remained seated, a picture of utter defeat and resignation, his spirit broken by the ravages of war.
"Let her go...or I will end you in an instant." Achilles's voice carried a steely resolve, his spear poised and ready for action.
"Ah, but of course!" Agamemnon's demeanor swiftly shifted to his customary cunning and mocking tone. "The little warrior relies solely on his mighty spear! A coward's weapon, indeed."
Achilles was keenly aware of Agamemnon's manipulative tactics, understanding that the King's only chance of victory lay in playing on Achilles's emotions. Despite this knowledge, Achilles chose to play along, not out of concern for his honor or the need to prove his prowess as a warrior, but rather out of a deeper drive to embody the role of a hero. Being the hero meant making sacrifices, even at great personal cost. This was the path he had to tread in order to be reunited with his beloved once more.
"I challenge you to a duel," Achilles declared, his voice ringing with authority as he sent his spear soaring into the sky with a display of formidable strength. "No divine weapons..." With a deliberate motion, he shed his armor and cast his gauntlet across the yard. "...no deceit, just a battle of honor between us. If you emerge victorious, Troy is yours. But should I prevail, you will lead your army back to Sparta and never set foot on this soil again."
The terms of the challenge heavily favored Agamemnon, ensuring his survival regardless of the outcome. Achilles understood the gravity of the offer and knew that Agamemnon could not afford to reject it.
All eyes were fixed on Agamemnon, the tension thick in the air as they awaited his response.
"And how can I be certain that no one will strike me down during the duel?" Agamemnon inquired, his voice tinged with suspicion.
"They won't, you have my word." Achilles offered his assurance, his tone unwavering.
"I find myself less than convinced, young Prince. This savage creature does not inspire trust," Agamemnon retorted, increasing the pressure of his sword against Briseis's neck, a crimson trail of blood marking its path.
"She will not interfere," Achilles asserted with conviction, his gaze unwavering.
"And what makes you so certain?" Agamemnon questioned, skepticism lacing his tone.
"I have given my word. She will not intervene." Achilles reiterated, his voice carrying a weight of finality and resolve.
After a moment Agamemnon released his hold on Briseis and pushing her away from him.
A blend of fury and exasperation contorted Briseis's features as she directed her gaze towards Agamemnon. Retrieving Patroklos's spear from the ground, she strode over to Achilles with purpose.
"You could have easily killed him and ended this! Why are you doing this!? What are you trying to prove!?" Briseis's words erupted in a burst of emotion.
"I'm doing this for Patroklos," Achilles replied, his eyes holding her in a gaze filled with warmth and determination. "Trust me."
In a moment of tense silence, Briseis fixed her gaze upon Achilles, her emotions a turbulent mix of anger and conflict.Despite her seething frustration with Achilles for possibly allowing Agamemnon to evade an easy triumph, a realization began to dawn on her. Were it not for Achilles and Patroklos, she might have met her demise long ago. With a mixture of anger and gratitude, she forcefully took his hand and placed Patroklos's spear into it, signifying her acceptance as she left him to face his duel.
"You know, young Prince, it's rather amusing how effortlessly your ego can be manipulated. One would think you'd have outgrown such vulnerabilities by now," Agamemnon taunted, his words laced with derision.
The two warriors moved in a cautious dance around each other, their hands firmly clutching their weapons as they locked eyes.
"My motivations are not as you presume, 'King'," Achilles retorted. "I finally understand what I need to do, and you won't keep me from him."
"Sure, we'll see about that," Agamemnon retorted with a confident smirk, his eyes gleaming with determination.
Agamemnon wasted no time, launching into a relentless series of rapid attacks. Achilles intercepted the blows with his spear, but Agamemnon's strength prevailed as he seized the weapon, using it to draw Achilles in for a powerful headbutt.
The impact sent Achilles reeling backwards, momentarily disoriented. However, his warrior instincts quickly kicked in, allowing him to recover swiftly as Agamemnon pressed on with renewed aggression. Anticipating the next onslaught, Achilles skillfully evaded each strike with calculated precision, his movements fluid and precise, gradually wearing down Agamemnon through his strategic evasions.
As Agamemnon's onslaught gradually waned, Achilles keenly observed an opening for counterattack. With a graceful fluidity in his movements, he twirled his spear with finesse, the motion almost resembling a dance. It had been a while since he had moved with such agility, and a wave of nostalgia washed over him in that moment.
In the past, the sheer power of his spear had often sufficed, rendering such intricate footwork unnecessary. However, in this present confrontation, faced with a fair and evenly matched opponent, Achilles found himself reverting to the fighting style of his youth with an effortless ease that surprised even him.
Agamemnon strained to fend off Achilles's relentless assault, but the speed and precision of Achilles's strikes proved overwhelming. The swift movements of Achilles's spear left a trail of cuts on Agamemnon's arms, waist, and thighs, drawing blood with each precise hit.
Covered in his own blood, Agamemnon crumpled to the ground, defeated, his grip tightening on his grievous injuries.
Achilles declared, towering over his fallen adversary. "The battle is yours no longer. Return home." Achilles's voice resonated with finality as Agamemnon lay there, gasping for breath, defeated and humbled.
A sudden chuckle escaped Agamemnon's lips as he taunted, "Do you believe that sparing me will earn you a place in Elysium? You are weak... much like that boy of yours... the soldiers spoke of how he cried out for you as he lay wounded on the battlefield, a pitiful sight-"
Before Agamemnon could finish his cruel words, Achilles's rage surged forth, his hand closing around the king's throat in a vice-like grip, cutting off his words and his breath.
"Speak of him again, and I will rend you limb from limb," Achilles growled, his teeth clenched and eyes bulging. In his blinded wrath, Achilles unknowingly fell into Agamemnon's trap.
A sly smirk played across the King's face, as he swiftly drew a concealed dagger, catching Achilles off guard and driving the blade deep into the Prince's chest.
Achilles's eyes widened in shock, his mouth agape as he struggled to draw breath, the searing pain coursing through his body.
Releasing his grip on Agamemnon, Achilles staggered backwards, a desperate gasp escaping his lips as he summoned his spear with a flick of his wrist. As Agamemnon rose to his feet, Achilles hurled the spear with all his might, but his aim faltered, the weapon missing its mark. In a cruel twist of fate, Agamemnon stomped down on the dagger lodged in Achilles's chest, driving it deeper and piercing through his lung with a sickening finality.
Suddenly, Briseis emerged from the shadows, wielding Agamemnon's own sword as she drove it into his back with a bloodcurdling scream.
Agamemnon's scream pierced the air, a primal sound of agony and shock, as he attempted to elbow Briseis in a desperate bid for survival. However, to his dismay, she remained unfazed, clad in Patroklos's formidable armor that rendered her impervious to his feeble attack.
In a chilling sequence of events, Paris emerged with his own sword, thrusting it mercilessly through Agamemnon's abdomen, the blade piercing through his guts with ruthless efficiency.
Agamemnon's hands instinctively grasped the weapon, his fingers slick with his own lifeblood as he futilely tried to wrench it free, each movement a testament to his waning strength and impending demise.
As the light of life dimmed in Agamemnon's eyes, a final, fatal blow came from King Priam, who drove his sword through Agamemnon's heart with a swift and decisive strike, bringing an end to the once-mighty king's reign of terror once and for all.
With the King's demise, a hollow emptiness settled within Briseis, a void where she had expected closure. Yet, as Agamemnon breathed his last, the world remained unchanged.
The anguished cries of the citizens reverberated through the air, the city engulfed in flames, the chaos unabated. The thirst for vengeance still burned within her, a relentless fire that refused to be quenched.
Struggling to compose herself amidst the turmoil, Briseis knew this was not the moment for reflection. Her gaze shifted to the fallen hero with golden locks, the one who had selflessly sacrificed himself for the greater good. His lifeless form lay motionless, a crimson river flowing from him like the eternal waters of Styx.
Briseis moved closer to the fallen hero, her steps heavy with sorrow as she knelt beside him, her hand gently clasping his in a gesture of reverence and disbelief.
"Why...why would you make such a foolish decision?" Her voice trembled with emotion, the weight of her words heavy with unspoken grief. "You could have won and kept your life! Why waste it like this?"
Her plea hung in the air, a desperate search for understanding in the face of his sacrifice. But the hero remained silent, his form still and unmoving, his gaze fixed on the twinkling stars above. And in that serene moment she noticed a faint, enigmatic smile upon his features.
As Briseis clasped his hand, a subtle weight caught her attention. Within his grasp lay a bracelet, its surface adorned with meticulously carved dice.
In that moment, a part of her understood that he could have easily killed Agamemnon at any moment, but that was not what he was fighting for.
Achilles' fight was one that would return him to his home, his philtatos, his agà pe.
