Hello Little One
Episode 8: Family Tensions
---
The Unexpected Visit
Ivy Carter wasnât prepared for the storm that was her parents.
The moment she stepped out of her dorm, her phone buzzed with a message from her mom.
Mom: Weâre here. Where are you?
She barely had time to take a deep breath before she spotted them standing near the campus fountain.
Her mom, Julia Carterâa petite but commanding womanâstood with her arms crossed, scanning the campus like she was inspecting a military base. Despite her small frame, she radiated authority, and Ivy had no doubt she was already judging every brick and blade of grass.
Her dad, Henry Carter, was the complete opposite. Tall and broad-shouldered, he was standing there with the softest smile, like he was seeing his little girl for the first time in years.
âIvy, sweetheart!â Julia called.
Ivy barely had time to react before her dad pulled her into a tight hug. âMy baby girl,â he murmured, holding onto her for a second too long.
âDad, I canât breathe,â Ivy wheezed.
He pulled back, eyes full of warmth. âYouâre eating well, right? Sleeping enough?â
Julia, ever the realist, rolled her eyes. âHenry, sheâs in college, not stranded in the wilderness.â
Henry ignored her, studying Ivy like he could see every moment of stress sheâd ever had. âAre you struggling? You can always come home ifââ
âIâm fine, Dad,â Ivy said quickly.
Julia narrowed her eyes. âYou better be. Lila tells me this place has been very eventful for you so far.â
Ivyâs stomach dropped. âUhâLila talks too much.â
âWhich is why we know all about your RA,â Julia added smoothly, watching Ivyâs expression like a hawk.
Crap.
---
As if the universe had sensed Ivyâs panic, a familiar voice interrupted.
âWell, this is an interesting family gathering.â
Ivy froze.
Her parents turned at the same time to see Elena Moore strolling toward them, hands in the pockets of her ripped jeans, a lazy smirk on her lips.
Ivy was going to die.
âSpeak of the devil,â Julia muttered under her breath.
Ivy gasped. âMom!â
Julia ignored her. âSo youâre Elena Moore.â
Elenaâs smirk didnât waver. âGuilty.â She glanced at Ivy. âYour cousin talks a lot, huh?â
Ivy groaned. âYou have no idea.â
Henry immediately stepped forward, eyes narrowing slightly. âIvyâs resident assistant, right?â
Elena nodded, offering her hand. âThatâs me.â
Henry shook itâbut not before giving her the classic dad assessment, eyes scanning Elena like she was a potential threat.
Elena, unfazed, just raised an eyebrow.
Julia, meanwhile, crossed her arms and blatantly looked Elena up and down. âYouâre not what I expected.â
Elena smirked. âI get that a lot.â
Ivy wanted to disappear.
---
As they walked across campus, Julia and Henry asked Elena far too many questions.
âSo, Lila tells me you like to tease Ivy,â Julia said casually.
Ivy choked on air. âMom!â
Elena, fully enjoying this, glanced at Ivy. âWhat can I say? Sheâs fun to mess with.â
Henryâs expression darkened slightly. âAnd whyâs that?â
Elena just smiled. âBecause she reacts so easily.â
Ivy was going to murder her.
Juliaâs lips twitched like she was trying not to smile, but Henryâs protectiveness was on full display. âIvy is my little girl,â he said firmly.
Elenaâs expression flickered just a little.
Something softened in her gaze, but the smirk didnât leave. âIâll keep that in mind, sir.â
---
After a painfully long tour, Ivy finally got a moment alone with Elena.
The second they were out of earshot, Ivy groaned. âYou loved that, didnât you?â
Elena laughed. âYour dad is intense.â
Ivy sighed. âYeah, well, welcome to my life.â
Elena leaned against a railing, stretching lazily. âParents are complicated.â
Ivy hesitated before asking, âWhat about yours?â
Elenaâs smirk faded just a bit. âMy dad expects a lot. Wants me to take over the family business, be the âperfect heir.ââ
Ivy frowned. âAnd you donât want that?â
Elena exhaled, running a hand through her hair. âI donât know. I could do it. But do I want to?â
For the first time, Ivy saw a different side of Elenaânot the cocky senior, not the playful tease, but someone who was just as lost as she was.
She hesitated, then nudged Elenaâs arm. âGuess we both have overbearing parents, huh?â
Elena chuckled. âGuess so.â
There was a brief moment of silenceâcomfortable, warm.
Thenâ
âYou really need to stop blushing when I call you Little One,â Elena said, her smirk fully returning.
Ivy groaned. âAnd you need to stop being so annoying.â
Elena just laughed.
But Ivy didnât miss the way her smirk had softenedâjust a little.
