Hello Little One
Episode 4: Family Calls
---
Ivy had barely rolled out of bed when her phone started buzzing on her nightstand. She rubbed her eyes, groaning, before glancing at the screen.
Mom Callingâ¦
She sighed. She loved her mom, but damn, the woman was determined to check in on her every other hour. She swiped to answer.
âHey, Mom.â
âIvy! Finally! I was starting to think you forgot about your poor mother.â
Ivy flopped back onto her bed. âMom, we talked last night.â
âYes, but a lot can happen overnight! What if you got lost? What if you fell down the stairs? What if your roommate turned out to be some kind of serialââ
âMom!â Ivy cut in, exasperated. âCamila is not a serial killer. Sheâs just messy.â
In the background, her dadâs deep voice chimed in. âTold you, sweetheart. Sheâs fine.â
Ivy smiled. âHey, Dad.â
âHowâs my grown-up college student doing?â he asked. âMade any new friends? Any professors out to destroy you yet?â
Ivy hesitated. âUh⦠yeah, I made some friends.â
Her mom gasped. âIs it that Elena girl?â
Ivy winced. Damn it, Lila. âUh⦠maybe?â
âI knew it! Lila said sheâs a senior, Ivy. Be careful around her! Older students can be bad influences.â
Her dad chuckled. âRelax, honey. Itâs not like sheâs dating the girl.â
Ivy nearly choked on air. âDAD!â
Her mom gasped. âOh my God, Ivy! Are you dating her?!â
âWhat? No!â Ivy sat up, flustered. âWe just talk sometimes! Sheâs annoying and likes teasing me, thatâs all!â
âThatâs how it starts,â her mom muttered suspiciously.
Ivy groaned. âI regret this call.â
Her dad laughed. âWeâre just messing with you, kiddo. But seriously, donât forget to focus on your studies, alright? Youâve worked too hard to get here.â
Ivy softened. âI know, Dad. I got this.â
There was a pause.
ââ¦Weâre proud of you, Ivy,â he said, voice warm.
Her chest tightened. âThanks, Dad.â
Her mom sniffled. âIf you ever need anythingââ
âI know, Mom.â
ââ¦And Iâm not overreacting about this Elena girl.â
Ivy groaned.

Elenaâs Conversation
While Ivy dealt with her overbearing parents, Elena sat on her bed, staring at her phone with a deep scowl.
Dad Callingâ¦
She exhaled through her nose before answering.
âHey.â
âYou took your time picking up.â
Elena rolled her eyes. âI was busy.â
A scoff. âWith what? Teasing freshmen?â
She smirked despite herself. âMaybe.â
Her father sighed, unimpressed. âElena, youâre graduating in a few months. When are you going to start taking things seriously?â
There it was.
Elena leaned back against the wall. âYou mean when am I going to âstop messing around and get my life togetherâ?â
Her fatherâs silence was confirmation.
âElena.â His voice was sharp. âWeâve discussed this. You need to figure out your career plans. I donât want you aimlessly drifting through life. This world wonât wait for you to get your act together.â
Her jaw tightened. âI have my act together.â
âNo, you donât,â he said bluntly. âYouâve spent the last four years dodging serious conversations about your future. You donât talk about your plans. Hell, you barely even come home anymore.â
Elena swallowed. âI have a life here.â
Her father scoffed. âA life of what? Playing around? Avoiding responsibility?â
Elena clenched her jaw. âIâm not avoiding anything.â
Silence stretched between them. Thenâ
âYou still donât want to take over the family business, do you?â
Elena closed her eyes. âI never wanted to.â
Her father exhaled, long and heavy. âYouâre so damn stubborn, Elena.â
She smirked faintly. âYou say that like itâs a bad thing.â
âIt is when it ruins your future.â
Elenaâs chest ached, but she kept her voice steady. âMy future is mine to ruin.â
There was another long pause before her father muttered, âYouâre impossible.â
âI know,â she whispered.
Then the line went dead.
Elena let out a slow breath, pressing her phone against her forehead.
Shit.

Later that night, Ivy was lying in bed, mindlessly scrolling on her phone when a text popped up.
Elena: Still alive, Little One?
Ivy smiled.
Ivy: Barely. My mom thinks youâre a bad influence.
Elena: Sheâs right. I am.
Ivy snorted.
Ivy: Rough day?
There was a long pause before Elena replied.
Elena: Something like that.
Ivy hesitated, then typedâ
Ivy: You wanna talk about it?
Another pause.
Elena: Nah. But thanks, Little One.
Ivyâs heart did a weird little flip.
She bit her lip.
Ivy: You sure you donât need some terrible freshman wisdom?
Elena: â¦Fine. Distract me, then.
Ivy grinned.
And just like that, they kept talkingâlong into the night.
