Episode 11: Confessions and Fears

The sky was painted in soft hues of orange and pink as the sun dipped toward the horizon. Ivy and Elena sat side by side on a quiet bench tucked away in a secluded part of campus. It had become an unspoken tradition between them—escaping from the chaos of college life to enjoy the peace of the evening.

Ivy hugged her knees to her chest, watching the golden light flicker through the swaying branches. "It's weird," she murmured, breaking the comfortable silence.

Elena, who was leaning back with her arms stretched across the back of the bench, turned her head lazily. "What is?"

Ivy exhaled. "How everything still feels so new. Like I’m still figuring out how to exist here."

Elena smirked. "That’s because you’re still a baby freshman, Little One."

Ivy shot her a glare but didn’t have the energy to argue. "I just feel like there’s so much I don’t understand yet. About myself, about life, about people." She hesitated. "And about you."

Elena raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Me?"

Ivy bit her lip, hesitating before admitting, "You're kind of a mystery, you know."

Elena let out a short laugh. "A mystery?"

Ivy nodded. "You act all cool and unbothered, but sometimes I get the feeling there’s a lot you don’t say."

Elena regarded Ivy for a moment, her usual smirk softening. "Maybe," she admitted.

Silence stretched between them again, comfortable yet charged. The cicadas hummed in the distance, filling the space where words had yet to form.

Then, in a voice quieter than usual, Elena said, "I’m intersex."

Ivy blinked, her mind taking a second to register the words.

"Oh."

Elena turned her gaze to the horizon, her expression unreadable. "I don’t usually bring it up unless it feels right. But you wanted to know more about me, so…"

Ivy sat up straighter, her heart suddenly pounding. She wasn’t sure why. Maybe because this felt important—more important than Elena’s usual teasing or casual remarks.

"I…" Ivy started, then hesitated.

She wanted to say something, anything, but she was afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Elena glanced at her sideways, amusement flickering in her eyes. "Relax, Little One. I’m not about to bite your head off."

Ivy let out a nervous chuckle. "I just… I don’t know what to say."

"Say whatever you’re thinking," Elena said simply.

Ivy swallowed. "Does… does it bother you to talk about it?"

Elena tilted her head, considering. "Not really. I just got used to people making assumptions, so I don’t always feel like explaining myself."

Ivy nodded slowly, trying to process everything. She had never knowingly met someone who was intersex before. She wasn’t ignorant—she had read about it in passing, but now that it was Elena, someone she admired and looked up to, she suddenly felt out of her depth.

She didn't want to say something stupid. She didn't want to offend her.

But her silence stretched too long, and Elena noticed.

"You're overthinking again," Elena said, shaking her head.

Ivy exhaled sharply. "I just… I don’t want to say the wrong thing."

Elena studied her, then smirked. "You’re cute when you’re nervous."

Ivy groaned, hiding her face in her hands. "You can’t just drop something personal like that and then tease me right after!"

Elena chuckled, nudging Ivy’s shoulder with her own. "I can do whatever I want."

Ivy peeked at her through her fingers. "You’re impossible."

"And yet, you still hang out with me."

Ivy sighed, dropping her hands. "I mean… yeah." She hesitated before adding, "I like spending time with you."

Elena’s smirk faltered for just a second, her gaze flickering toward Ivy’s. Something passed between them—something unspoken yet undeniable.

"I like spending time with you too, Little One."

Ivy's chest felt too warm, her face too hot. She needed to break the tension before she combusted.

"So," Ivy said, clearing her throat. "You said people make assumptions about you. What kind of assumptions?"

Elena leaned back again, stretching out her legs. "Oh, you know. Some people get weird about it. Like, they don’t know where to place me. Others think it’s some kind of taboo topic. And then there are the ones who think it’s their business to ask personal questions."

Ivy frowned. "That’s awful."

Elena shrugged. "It is what it is."

Ivy hesitated. "Do you… wish people understood better?"

Elena was quiet for a moment. Then, she smiled—this time, a little softer, a little more real. "Yeah. But I don’t let it define me. I’m just… me."

Ivy found herself smiling too. "Yeah. You are."

Elena turned her head, locking eyes with Ivy in a way that made her stomach flip.

"Thanks, Ivy," Elena murmured.

Ivy blinked. "For what?"

Elena’s lips curled into a small smirk. "For not being weird about it."

Ivy huffed. "I was totally weird about it!"

Elena chuckled. "True. But you were also genuine. And I appreciate that."

Ivy felt her heart swell at the words. She ducked her head slightly, fiddling with the hem of her sweater.

The moment settled between them, warm and comfortable, until Ivy finally broke the silence again.

"Hey, Elena?"

"Yeah?"

Ivy glanced at her shyly. "You ever think about what’s next? Like, after college?"

Elena exhaled through her nose, smirking. "Every day."

"And?"

Elena tilted her head toward the sky, watching the first stars peek out. "I think… I’m still figuring that out."

Ivy nodded, exhaling slowly. "Me too."

Elena turned to her again, her gaze softer than usual. "Guess we’re both just two lost souls, huh?"

Ivy smiled. "Guess so."

And for the first time, Ivy didn’t mind feeling a little lost—as long as she had Elena beside her.
