As Reshia was preparing to leave for the inn sheâd been staying at, Faith approached her with a warm smile.
âReshia, why donât you stay for supper tonight?â Faith asked.
Reshia hesitated, glancing out at the fading sunlight. âThank you, but Iâll have to head back soon. I donât like walking through the village after dark.â
Faith exchanged a quick look with Marcus before turning back to her. âActually, weâve been meaning to talk to you about that. Weâve decided to give you a guestroom here in the house. Youâre already like family to us, Reshia. You come every day to teach Raul personally, and thatâs such an honor for us.â
Reshiaâs eyes widened in surprise. âOh, I couldnât possiblyââ
âDonât even start,â Faith said with a playful wag of her finger. âWe insist. Youâre doing so much for Raul, and weâd feel better knowing youâre safe and close by. Besides,â she added, âweâre planning to give you an allowance on top of what the kingdom is paying you. Itâs the least we can do.â
Reshia blinked, taken aback by their generosity. A faint blush touched her cheeks. âI⦠I donât know what to say. Thatâs very kind of you, but, I donât want to impose.â
âNonsense,â Marcus said with a grin. âYouâre practically family already.â
After a momentâs hesitation, Reshia smiled, a genuine warmth lighting her face. âThank you. Iâll accept, then.â
By this time, Raul had already turned in for the night, worn out from using the healing spell. His mana reserves had taken a bigger hit than he expected, leaving him too tired to stay up. That left Reshia alone at the table with Faith and Marcus during supper.
As they ate, Marcus leaned back in his chair and fixed Reshia with a thoughtful look. âYou know,â he began, âI did some digging into your background.â
Reshia nearly choked on her drink. âWhat?â she said, coughing slightly. âWhy would you do that?â
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
Marcus chuckled, though his tone was serious. âItâs nothing bad, I promise. I just wanted to understand why someone as young and talented as you volunteered for the mage training program. Itâs rare for someone your age to take on something so demanding, especially in a rural village like this one.â
Reshia froze, her expression a mix of shock and discomfort.
Faith placed a reassuring hand on Reshiaâs arm. âHe means well, Reshia. You donât have to worry.â
Reshia looked between them, her shoulders stiff. For a moment, she seemed unsure of what to say.
Marcus went on, his tone gentle but direct. âWe know about your family.â
Reshia stiffened, her fork pausing halfway to her mouth. âOh,â
Marcus sighed. âYour parents and older sisterâthey were arrested by the kingdom for using magic to commit robbery. It wasnât easy to find out, but I made a few discreet inquiries.â
Reshiaâs face went pale. She lowered her fork, her hands trembling slightly. âI⦠I didnât think anyone here would know about that.â
âReshia,â Marcus said quickly, raising a hand, âI also know you werenât involved. You were studying at the Magic Research Institute in the capital when it happened. Your name wasnât tied to any of it.â
Reshia looked down, her voice barely a whisper. âIt doesnât matter. People always assume the worst when they hear about my family. Thatâs why I never talk about it.â
Faith reached across the table, placing a comforting hand over Reshiaâs. âWe understand, dear. Everyone has their own struggles. What your family did doesnât define you.â
Marcus nodded. âWe know youâre here trying to raise funds to help them. And we donât have any problem with thatâitâs your business, and it doesnât change what we think of you.â
Reshiaâs eyes glistened, though she quickly blinked back the tears. âThank you,â she said softly, her voice unsteady.
Faith squeezed her hand. âYouâve been nothing but kind and hardworking since you came to this village. â
As Reshia tried to gather herself, the soft creak of a door caught their attention. Raul emerged, his hair tousled and his eyes half-lidded with sleep. âJust heading to the washroom,â he mumbled, but as he passed, he couldnât help overhearing snippets of the conversation.
ââ¦trying to raise funds to bail out my familyâ¦â Reshiaâs voice was quiet, tinged with a sadness Raul had never heard before.
He paused for a moment before continuing to the washroom. As he washed his hands, her words stuck in his mind. Reshia had been so good to himâpatient, encouraging, and kind. She didnât deserve to carry such a heavy burden.
Raul dried his hands and returned to his room, lying awake in the dark. Reshia had always seemed so strong, so put-together. But now he saw a different side of herâa side weighed down by pain and responsibility. He clenched his fists, his ten-year-old mind racing with ideas.
âIâll find a way to help her,â he whispered to himself. âSheâs done so much for me. Itâs the least I can do.â
