Chapter 19: The City of Dying Light
----------------------------------------
Caelum and Lucen stood at the precipice of a cliff that wasnât there a moment ago.
Below them, the City of Dying Light flickered into viewâlike a memory hesitating to return.
The skyline was warped, leaning, melting under the strain of false time. Towers twisted into each other like lovers locked in a final embrace. Bridges led to nowhere, and streets reformed the moment you turned your back.
But most haunting of all were the people.
Their eyes didnât blink.
Their smiles didnât falter.
They repeated lines like actors in a play with no audience.
Lucen exhaled. âItâs like the cityâs pretending to be alive.â
Caelum narrowed his eyes.
âNo. Itâs refusing to die.â

As they descended the fragmented staircase of black marble, the city responded to Caelumâs presence. Lights flickered out. The false stars above dimmed. The echoes of the inhabitants turned toward himâbut didnât approach.

They recognized him.
Not as a stranger.
But as a forgotten line in their scripts.
One they had been told to avoid.
----------------------------------------
They walked past murals that painted themselves.
Scenes of AÄs-Therionâtall, golden, impossibly distantâfacing off against silhouettes of concepts.
Regret.
Silence.
Oblivion.
Lucen lingered at one, tilting his head. âThat looks like you.â
âIt isnât,â Caelum said. âBut maybe one day it will be.â
----------------------------------------
In the central plaza stood a fountain of frozen fire.
And next to itâa girl.
Back turned.
Hair like coals at dusk.
A floating crown of ember petals drifting lazily in the still air.
Chains of crystalline guilt coiled loosely around her shoulders⦠but they werenât pulling her anymore.
She was waiting.
Caelum slowed.
Lucen gave him a brief nod. âGo. Iâll keep the ghosts busy.â
And Caelum stepped forwardâtoward the girl who had once died for him.
----------------------------------------
âAevira,â he said.
She didnât turn.
âYou remember me?â
Still silence.
Then, finally, she spoke. âI remember dying in your name.â
Caelum froze.
She turned then, eyes glowing with orange grief and steel.
âYou were supposed to stay forgotten.â
âI didnât choose to be remembered.â
She laughed. Soft. Bitter. Beautiful.
âAnd yet here you are.â

Caelum clenched his fists.
Then he said, quietly, â...Iâm sorry.â
The city shivered.
Aevira blinked.
âYou remember?â
âNo,â he said, voice raw. âBut I felt the weight of it the moment I heard your name.â
She stared for a long moment.
Then, slowly⦠the chains on her shoulders shattered into sparks.

She took a step forward.
âYou donât deserve my help.â
Caelum nodded. âProbably not.â
Another step.
âBut I still remember the boy who cried in a burning world⦠and begged not to be god anymore.â
Caelumâs breath caught.
Aevira looked away.
âWalk with me,â she whispered. âAnd maybe Iâll remember whether I want to kill you or save you.â
----------------------------------------
High above them, behind the fading moonlight of the false skyâ¦
Vaelus watched.
In his hand, a broken compass spun wildly.
âSheâs breaking script,â he murmured.
And beside him, a cloaked figure chuckled. A voice both sharp and tired.
> âThatâs what makes her useful.â
Vaelus said nothing.
But deep in his chest, something old and once-pure began to fracture.
He did not know whether he was jealous⦠or afraid.
