Chapter 18: Aeviraâs Dream
----------------------------------------
In a realm stitched from forgotten lullabies and broken promises, the City of Dying Light shimmered beneath a permanent twilight. Lanterns never stayed lit. The stars above were painted illusions. And the peopleâsmiling, polite, hollowâwalked like actors caught mid-script, repeating scenes they could no longer remember the meaning of.
And at the heart of the city stood Aevira.
She was beautifulâbut not in the way legends sang of.
She was unfinished.
Her skin shimmered with dusk-hue, and her eyes held reflections of lives sheâd never lived. A crown of ember petals floated above her brow, drifting slightly in wind that didnât exist. On her back, chains made of crystallized guilt coiled tightly, as though dragging some unseen weight.
She stood atop a crumbling balcony, eyes closed⦠and dreaming of a name that should not have returned.

In her dream, she saw him.
Not Caelum as he was nowâbut Caelum as he would become.

Burning like a truth too sharp for the world to hold.
Wielding a blade made from silence and a soul stitched together from regrets, choices, and fading warmth.
And in that dreamâ¦
They were not enemies.
Nor lovers.
But something far more dangerousâ
> âTwo echoes drawn from the same wound.â
----------------------------------------
She woke screaming.
The sky above the city cracked slightlyâthin fractures appearing like tears in a painting.
And from the shadows below, priests of the Cult of True Silence emerged, their faces hidden behind hollowed-out masks carved from god-bone.
âYouâve dreamed of him again,â one rasped.
Aevira turned slowly, the embers around her pulsing. âI didnât dream. I remembered.â
They stepped closer. âThen you are near your awakening. He approaches the city.â
âAnd?â
âIf he reaches you,â the priest hissed, âyou will remember your purpose. You will remember why you chose to die.â
Aeviraâs hand twitched, flames crackling at her fingertips.
âThen I hope he runs fast,â she whispered, âbecause I no longer agree with the ending we wrote.â
----------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in the Living Archive, Caelum jolted as the memory-shard whispered her name again.
Aevira.
The weight of it nearly staggered him.
Lucen noticed. âWhat was that?â
Caelum stared off toward the eastâtoward a horizon now glowing faintly with blood-orange fire.
âI donât know yet,â he said quietly. âBut I think someone important just remembered me.â

Lucen grinned. âLet me guess. Another cursed city? Maybe a secret flame-witch with abandonment issues?â
Caelum didnât smile.
He whispered, almost reverently:
âNo. This oneâs... mine.â
----------------------------------------
Far beyond both of them, hidden in layers of false reality and sealed mythsâ¦
Vaelus watched.
No longer dormant.
No longer quiet.
From behind a mask made of cracked stars, he whispered into the void:
> âTwo of us have awakened. Let the first chapter of the true war begin.â
And the sky, for a moment, blinked.
