Overexerted, Chastain dropped her face to her hands and wept.
The woman dropped down next to Chastain, lifting her chin. âCome, little one. Letâs find you a chamber and get you warm. Are you a Dread seeking the sanctuary of the Hideout?â
Chastain shook her head.
Margaret put an arm around Chastainâs shoulders and began turning her.
As if a wild redhead child appearing at their gate was the most natural thing in the world.
Chastain lifted her gaze to the rising sun. It warmed her face within the beautiful garden.
Chavias knew that look. Her soul is calm now. Peaceful.
âI-I-â Chastain stuttered to explain why she was there.
The older woman hushed the stuttering words. âNo need, Love. Some things go without being saidâ¦â She smiled softly. âMy nameâs Margaret.â
Chastain lifted sorrow-filled eyes and a hesitant smile turned her lips.
Margaret offered her hand.
Taking it hesitantly, Chastainâs hand wrapped hers.
âWhat is it Dear? Itâs only a hand.â
âNo one but my sisters have offered me one afore.â
The woman clucked. âThen itâs high time.â
Chastain sobbed.
âYou cry, Love.â Margaret encouraged. âIt seems you could use a good one.â
Margaretâs hand was soft and comforting as she led Chastain up a barren staircase. âThese rooms are slight and cold. But Iâm afraid there all we have.â
Chavias haunted the steps behind them. Wanting to tell the girl goodbye. It meant alot she trusted me enough to sacrifice everyone and everything she knew to believe in me.
âTheyâre far warmer than what Iâve known.â
âThey are?â Margaret asked softly. Expression worried.
The girlâs sad eyes fell.
Margaret regretted the question sheâd asked. âShall we see if we can find you a warming block?â
Chastainâs voice was choked. âThank you. Thank you so much!â
The other woman materialized in the doorway. Offering a calm smile. âMy name is Agatha Dear.â
Working together, they fetched her a block from the fireplace on the lower level.
Chastain collapsed onto the soft cot. Hearing the crunch of rushes under her.
Upon returning, Margaret sat on the edge of the cot and tenderly caressed Chastainâs curling locks while the other woman carefully tucked the covered block under the blankets.
Chastain pressed her feet to them and wrapped her arms around her body. Only moments later she surrendered to blissful sleep.
A smile danced about both womenâs lips as they exited the chamber. âShe came.â
âAnd you said she wouldnât.â Mags said.
âThere are still rare occasions when Iâm wrong.â
âDo you think he sent her here?â
Acharius. Far from. Chavias smiled at their backs.
âI donât think so.â Agatha shook her head. âIf he didnât, what will he think of her being here?â
âHe wonât want her to know about all of it. About him.â
âThen we shanât tell her.â
âAgreed.â Mags nodded decisively.
Wise decision. Chavias turned back to look down at the little girl.
âGoodnight and goodbye sweet one.â He brushed knuckles over her cheek. âSleep well and be safe.â
âThank you.â She murmured sleepily. âChavias...â

âHow could you let this happen?â Radix pointed a gnarled finger at her.
âMe?â Udora asked, petrified.
âI thought your spells kept them from leaving?â He murmured thoughtfully. Beginning to pace the caverns.
âSomeone showed them how to get passed my magic. They couldnât have done it without help! Who could do that?â
âYou!â He spat.
âWhy would I save the children?â She squawked. âYou know I hate them. Iâve thrived every moment in knowing the last of the little watchers would soon die.â She gestured wildly. âI was near to breaking that littlest one as you asked. The one with visions.â
âWhy was it not done already?â
âYou said it was best to crush their spirits first before you consumed their soulsâ¦â
He growled in his throat recalling the words. âDread Wench! You failed me!â He continued his rant. âI should burn you alive.â
âNo, My Lord!â She threw herself at his feet. âPlease do not. Iâd do anything. Youâre the one who loves me. Iâd do anything you asked of me! Iâd never betray you.â
âI have heard that from women before.â
âBut none such as me.â She pleaded. âWhat would you have of me?â She quickly unbuttoned her dress, tugging the sleeves down to expose herself to his roving eyes.
âI-Iâ¦You know Iâm yours!â She proclaimed. Tossing her head back to expose her neck.
A neck Radix was sorely tempted to slit just now. âFool woman! Youâll be punished for their loss. Today has cost me greatly.â
She nodded emphatically. âI understand.â
âOkine.â He shouted.
Making Udoraâs eyes dart nervously. âNo.â She shook her head fervently. Clutching the edges of her dress in an effort to cover herself. âNot that.â She wailed.
âOkine!â He shouted again. Summoning the giant who lumbered into the cavern. Thick hammer in hand. He wore only a strip of leather to cover himself. And a strap over his torso that he could sling his hammer through when the want arose. His skin was pale green, and he was wound all over with thick muscle from his years as a blacksmith before becoming Cimmerii. He was massive.
âTake her, Okine.â Radix almost pitied her, had he been capable, before giving a dismissing wave. âTake her Okine. You may have her.â
âNo!â She cried. Reaching out for Radix as Okine, cackling, circled a crushing arm around her waist and ribs. Lifting her from the floor. âPlease!â She cried.
Radix looked over his shoulder dispassionately. âWe shall see if there is enough of you left to forgive when he is done.â
