âWhat was thaâ abouâ? She near razed the house.â
Sebastian grunted at the sound of Mardichiâs burr as he casually entered the chamber as though it were his own.
What are you doing here? His smile died as the barbarian interrupted his pleasant reflecting on how soft sheâd been and the panic on her face when heâd gotten ahold of her.
âYe do know a well-sated woman doesnât flee in terror?â
Since when would you know? Bastâs eyes narrowed. Recognizing he was in a sour mood. Either because sheâd left or because Mardichi had intruded.
âSheâs afraid of herself. Not me.â Bast murmured, tucking his face into the pillow to avoid the man.
âJust the same if sheâs bolting yer chamber well into the night, yer failing to satisfy âer.â
âIs a barbarian trying to give me romance advice?â Bast twisted his face to ask derisively. Before tucking it back into the pillow. Still catching her scent from where her hair had been moments ago.
âNay. Advice on laying with a wench.â
Not a wench. Wenches belong in taverns.
This woman belongs in my bed. Only mine.
âCareful.â Bastâs arm shot out to point a staying finger.
âOohâ¦â Mardichi sat in the plush chair in the far corner and wiggled his shoulders into the comfortable depths.
Heâs planning to stay awhile. Bast groaned inwardly.
âDonât.â Bast lurched up to look at him. âIâve warned you brother. Do not test me.â
âOhhâ¦â Mardichi made a disappointed sound. âIâve never before found something ta goad ye.â
âInsult me as you wish.â Bast muttered. âBut do not call her names. You donât know her.â
Mardichi sighed, conceding. ââTwas no personal insult on ye woman. Most women are wenches.â
âI know.â Bast calmed. âBut she is something unique. Different.â
âHateful and sweet.â Mardichi chuckled. âI know. Iâve seen âer witâ ye.â His tone softened. ââTis endless amusement to me thaâ she sees ye complete as ye are. Nothinâ more. Nothinâ less. She sees ye witâout the magic.â
Thatâs true.
The depth of that statement struck Bast. âOnce in a while, Brother, I see rare glimmers of wisdom in you.â
Sheâs vulnerable to me as a man. Not to my magic. For some unknown reason that caused a rise in his body that made it uncomfortable lying on his stomach.
âI know.â Mardichi groaned. ââTis âcause I couldna find any drink in this blasted castle.â
