âNo, Hayden is the Downey Familyâs daughter-how could she be someoneâs surrogate womb.â Violet frowned and wished she could find evidence to deny that Hayden was the girl back then, âAnd if Hayden is the surrogate girl, then how many children did she really give birth to? Why is there another child with her now?â
Lachlan pushed up his glasses and slowly opened the papers containing the details of the affair.
âAccording to Caesar, six years ago they arrested the wrong person in a nightclub. Only after they did what they wanted, they discovered they had picked up the wrong girl. Later, Caesar, secretly watched Hayden until he saw her go to the hospital for an abortion. Then he sent someone to arrest her and forced her to sign a contract.
First she gave birth to a child and Caesar took it away from her. Only later Caesar found out from the doctor that they were twins, there was still another girl, but the baby had already been taken away by Hayden and he decided to do nothing more. Partly out of guilt, and partly because he wanted to keep it a secret, he never saw Hayden again. He quit soon after and went back to his hometown.â
âSoâ¦â Violet held the corner of the dresser, her expression softening a little, âJoseph just doesnât know they made a mistake with the rent girl.â
âBased on the situation now, Iâm guessing the only person who knew is Caesar. The people involved back then may have gone to another city, Iâm not sure if theyâre alive or dead now.â
âWe mustnât let Joseph find out about this.â Violet thought vaguely that, if Joseph knew that Hayden was Noahâs birth mother, she would never have a chance to marry him. Therefore, she would never allow such a thing to happen.
âThatâs your business then.â Lachlan picked up the papers and stood up, âMy job is done, give me the final payment.â
âYouâre the best detective in N City and you value money. I wouldnât dare not pay you every penny you deserve.â Violet shot him a look with a somewhat contemptuous expression.
However, Lachlan was frank in admitting this statement, âOf course I value it, I also think money is something worth valuing. This is because the only thing that wouldnât cheat you, is money.â
It was the first time Violet had ever heard anyone speak so frankly about their love of money. She snorted with a face of disagreement and indicated to her manager standing next to her, âJason, transfer the money to her.â
While Jason was busy transferring the money, she looked at the information on the papers. Then she tore them into pieces and threw them into the wastebasket, âThese are photocopies. Whereâs the original? Whereâs the original copy of the lease?â
âCesar is not an idiot. In the end, I couldnât prove that I work for Joseph, so he took everything back and refused to let me see any more, ome these photos without him noticing. Also, I am only responsible for finding out the truth, I am not responsible for getting the original copy for you. However, you could not dock my pay for this; the conditions are stipulated in the contract.â
It was all about money. Lachlan only cared about money. Violet was sick of hearing him talk about money. Suddenly, something occurred to her. She looked at him and said, âSince you like money so much, how about you go and do something for me, and when you accomplish your task, Iâll pay you five million dollars? How about that?â
âFive million?â Lachlan was trying to decipher her intentions, âWhat do you want me to do?â
âI want the truth of this matter to be a secret forever.â A sinister look shone in Violetâs eyes.
âI wonât kill anyone no matter how much you pay me.â Rejected Lachlan her request without a second thought, âI only do technical work, you should get yourself a hitman for such things.â
But Violet said, âI didnât ask you to kill him, I just want you to find a way to destroy all the original information from Caesarâs hands, can you do it?â.
Lachlan hesitated for a moment when he heard this. It was indeed a bit difficult, but it wasnât something completely impossible to do.
âSix million.â After a momentâs calculation, he raised his head and looked directly into Violetâs eyes, âItâs a risky task. Itâs illegal to break into peopleâs homes.â
âAgreed.â Violet agreed instantly, âDeal.â
After Lachlan left, Jason closed the dressing room door and said, âItâs not a good idea for you to let him do this, he doesnât look like heâs very good at it, so donât create any more trouble.â
âMy intention is to make trouble.â Violet had a sinister look on her face, âJason, go find someone else to follow Lachlan. After I destroy all the information, get rid of Caesar.â
âYou meanâ¦â.
âOnly the dead keep secrets.â
ââ¦â.
â¦
The next morning, Joseph woke up and noticed a smell of buns. From the second floor, he saw that the two children had gotten up and were sitting around the table to eat. Moreover, the buns were still warm releasing a strong smell.
âAlready the children are awake, come have breakfast.â
Hayden came out of the kitchen, still holding a pot of congee in his hand, âThereâs red date, meat and vegetarian.â
Joseph nodded, warmth melting his icy expressions as he turned around.
âDonât worry Miss Downey, Iâll serve. You may sit.â
When Emma saw that Hayden was about to distribute the food, she rushed over to help her. She handed Hayden and the two boys a bowl of congee each, then carefully brought the fourth bowl to Joseph.
âYoung master, you may eat now.â Joseph glanced at it and asked, âWhere are the chopsticks?â
Hayden and the two boys were using spoons to drink from the bowl. They were also using their hands to eat the buns, so they didnât mind using chopsticks much. Hence, there was no sign of chopsticks on the table.
However, Josephâs question startled Emma. Her hands shook and she spilled some hot congee.
Josephâs face instantly darkened. There was the sound of the chair rubbing against the floor. He frowned and looked down at the congee in his pants, âWhatâs the matter with you?â
Emma was so startled that her legs faltered and she fell to her knees, her eyes instantly reddening. âYoung master, I didnât mean to.â
Seeing this, Hayden was also startled and came over to check on her. âAre you all right, are you burned?â
Joseph frowned, a displeased expression appearing on his face. This mess really made him feel embarrassed, especially with Hayden around.
âI guess youâre okay.â Hayden looked at the frightened Emma and frowned, âI think youâre being too fierce with the maid. Sheâs still a child, youâre scaring her.â
Hearing this, Joseph narrowed his eyes and asked, âAm I fierce?â.
She just said âWhatâs wrong with you,â was that considered fierce?
âYouâre not fierce? You made Emma scared.â Hayden hugged Emma and suddenly came to his senses, realizing he had made a mistake and tried to amend his statement, âNo, I didnât mean youâre fierce. I just meant that, after all, Emma is only nineteen. Besides, I heard that she only came to work here a month ago, you should treat her better.â
Okay, all this explanation didnât help at all. He was still a fierce guy.
âForget itâ Joseph got a little impatient and waved Emma away, then went upstairs.
The two little ones looked at each other in front of the table. Stella understood the situation and said with a worried look on her face, âIt looks like Joseph is burned. Iâm going to go check on him.â
Hayden immediately turned and looked at her, âWhatâs the use of you going to check on him? You donât know how to treat burns. Donât make trouble, sit down and eat. Iâll go take a look at him.â
With that, she wiped her hands and headed toward the dressing room where Joseph was.
