The next morning, Hayden woke up and turned his body over, he felt as if his bones were breaking into pieces.
He slowly opened his eyes and found himself in a sumptuously decorated room. It was not unfamiliar to him. He glanced around the room and realized it was the guest room of Josephâs house.
He lifted the blanket as he wanted to get out of bed and looked down. She immediately opened her eyes and screamed loudly, âAhh!â.
Her scream was muffled by the sound of water splashing in the bathroom.
Hayden looked horrified into the bathroom. He could faintly see the figure of a fit man through the frosted glass.
Really?
She tugged hard on the sheet. What did he do last night?
The noise of the water in the bathroom abruptly ceased. A moment later, he pulled the door open with a slightly wet hand. She wrapped a towel around her waist and dried her hair as if nothing had happened. It seemed he hadnât heard her scream. After taking two steps, she saw Hayden sitting on the bed and their gazes met in an instant.
Gazing at her strong upper body, Haydenâs mind went blank.
She tilted the corner of her lips and revealed a tight smile. She stammered the words, âYou and Iâ¦last night, maybeâ¦? Did something happen?â
âCanât you feel it yourself?â Joseph asked her. He draped the towel over his shoulder and water droplets from his partially wet hair slid down his face. He looked extremely hot.
âStay back.â Hayden covered his eyes because he didnât want to look at her body.
âWhat are you afraid of?â Joseph stood beside the bed with a calm face, âWeâve done everything we should and shouldnât have done last night. Donât tell me you donât remember anything that happened last night.â
Hayden lowered her head, her face red as a tomato. She was so nervous she couldnât say a word.
Of course she knew what happened last night. âI⦠I canât remember anything.â
She steeled herself and planned not to admit it.
Joseph grimaced above his head, and Hayden thought heâd misheard. When he looked up, Joseph had already grabbed a bathrobe from the closet and was heading for the door.
âThe servant will send you clothes and medicine later. Come down to eat when youâve changed your clothes.â He stood in the doorway with his back to her and said in a cold tone.
âMedicine?â Hayden froze for a moment, âWhat medicine?â.
Was it a birth control pill or something? Just as he was thinking nonsense, a deep voice sounded on the other side of the door.
âAntiseptic cream.â
âDid I hurt myself?â Hayden felt funny at the man who couldnât make his words clear. He really didnât understand his words.
When he got out of bed to shower, his face turned red. In an instant, she understood where she should apply the antiseptic cream.
She didnât know whether to be angry with the man or thank him for his consideration.
After changing her clothes, she stayed in the room for more than ten minutes to clear her mind before heading out the door. When he saw the servant in the hallway preparing to clean the room, his face was still calm.
He pretended nothing had happened and greeted the servant.
âGood morning.â
The servant smiled cheerfully, âMiss Downey, itâs no longer morning. Itâs noon now.â
The forced smile on Haydenâs face seemed even more forceful now.
When he came downstairs, Joseph was not in the parlor.
âMaster is attending to some business matters in the study room. He told me to call him for lunch as soon as he came down.â
âNo need.â Hayden quickly raised his hand and made a dismissive gesture, âDonât call him. Iâm leaving now, I have something else to do, so I wonât be eating here.â
âAhh, Miss Downey, I donât think this is such a great idea. Thisâ¦â
Hayden was afraid the maid would stop him from leaving, so he hurried out, even though he hadnât changed his shoes.
The sound of a car pulling up sounded and Hayden stopped his steps.
A black car pulled up in front of the yard. An old housekeeper who looked familiar got out and opened the car door. The Beckham family elder stepped out of the car. âMiss Downey?â
The old man looked her up and down, âWhat a coincidence, Iâm here to visit Joseph, are you here too?â.
âMr. Beckham.â
Hayden smiled guiltily. She wanted to dig a hole and hide her head inside. At that moment, he realized that everything that had happened before wasnât awkward at all. The awkwardness now, was the most awkward moment he had ever experienced in his entire life.
Mr. Beckhamâs car was blocking the front door to the courtyard, obviously not planning to let her go.
Two minutes later, Joseph came downstairs from the study and Hayden had gone to sit at the dining room table, as if he were a criminal awaiting trial.
âGrandpa?â Joseph frowned and turned toward them, âWhy are you here?â
The old man replied warmly, âItâs been a long time since youâve come to visit me. I stopped by to see you on my way, but I didnât expect to have an unexpected surprise here.â
The old man decided to stop by today? It was too much of a coincidence.
Joseph didnât expose him. He walked to the seat across from Hayden and was about to sit down, but a servant pulled a chair up next to Hayden, âYoung master, sit here.â
Hayden suddenly coughed and shook his head at him. He felt as guilty as a teenage girl who hadnât been home all night and then was discovered by her parents.
Joseph ignored her uncomfortable expression and directly walked over to sit next to her. âSince Grandpa is here, letâs eat together.â
The old man nodded his head slightly. He asked Hayden to eat more, but didnât move his chopsticks at all.
Hayden prepared to eat, and felt really uncomfortable eating with them.
She was afraid the old man would ask her strange questions. He ate in silence so that the old man could ignore his presence. However, things didnât always go her way.
âI already knew about last night.â
Hayden directly choked on the pork stew in his mouth when he said that. Her face turned bright red. She wanted to say something, but couldnât, she could only hold the glass of water and keep emptying water down her throat.
âOur Joseph is not irresponsible. Iâll let him give you an explanation.â Saying that, the old man looked fiercely at Joseph, âDo I still have a say now?â.
âGrandpa, itâs too quick for you to know about this.â Joseph glared at Mark.
The old man had received the news so quickly and it came the next morning. It was obvious to conclude who it was that told his grandfather.
After being stared at by Joseph, Mark immediately lowered his gaze. There was still no expression on his face.
Hayden had finally swallowed the stew. He wanted to wave his hands and said no.
Before he could speak, the old man said to Joseph, âBy the way, now that youâve settled down with Hayden, you should hurry up and fix things with Violet. I get a headache every time I see some of that erroneous news.â
Settled?
Hayden lifted her head and gaped. What had they fixed while she was still choking on a piece of stew?
Her and Joseph?
