When Hayden got out of the car, she was surprised to see a familiar house in front of her.
âLorraine, I sold this house, didnât I?â.
Lorraine asked her assistant to take the suitcase inside the house, then explained. âMr. Godfery is worried that youâre not used to living somewhere else, so he let me buy this house back after you left.â Haydenâs feelings were complicated.
The interior furnishings were the same as before. The only difference was the Christmas tree by the fireplace. The tree was decorated with colors, creating a Christmas atmosphere.
âThis tree was decorated by Mr. Godfery before Christmas.â
âDid he invite his friends over to have a party here?â Hayden patted the bells on the tree and said, âHe used to like to have parties.â
âNo.â Lorraineâs voice sounded behind her, âOn Christmas Eve, he stayed here alone all night.â
The hand holding the bell was stiff, Hayden turned around slowly, looking at Lorraine in astonishment, âAlone?â.
In recent years, Edison would prepare for a party a month in advance. For example, he would select and roast the turkey himself for Thanksgiving, pick out and wrap the gifts, choose the games for the Christmas Day party. Hayden always thought Edison was a funny guy.
âYeah.â Lorraine nodded, sadness shining in her eyes, âIn fact, Mr. Godfery doesnât have many friends in the U.S., most of the so-called friends are just business associates. After his departure, for Mr. Godfery the festivals are nothing more than ordinary calendar days.â
Contrary to Haydenâs belief, Lorraine worked with Edison for many years. She often saw Edison with a frown, but whenever she saw Hayden, she hid all her worries and kept smiling.
When her company faced the forced merger, she also took time out to decorate the Christmas tree and buy gifts for Hayden and her daughter.
Lorraine offered to help with that, but was turned down.
Earlier, Lorraine thought she would go with Hayden.
Because there was no other man who loved Hayden more than Edison.
Facing Lorraineâs gaze, Hayden suddenly felt uncomfortable.
âIâllâ¦Iâll stay at the hotel, itâs more convenient.â Finishing speaking, she stopped the assistant who was lifting her suitcase, âThank you, but I can carry it.â
âHayden.â Lorraine stopped her, âStaying here is more convenient than staying at the hotel, nothing will change, everything is the same as before.â
Hayden pulled the suitcase towards himself and slowly turned around.
âItâs changed, everyone has their own life.â Lorraineâs eyes grew cold.
âDonât you think itâs cruel to say that? Why didnât you say that for the last five years? He loves you so much, but you used him and threw him out after using him. Why are you so cruel?â
âThatâs your opinion.â Hayden was relieved, âEdison shouldnât have let you bring me this far, I think you should go back.â
Lorraine frowned and said in disgust.
âSo what? I have to let you know how much heâs done for you. All these years, you knew he was kind to you, but do you remember how kind he was to you? Or why he was so kind to you?â
âSo you think I should do something to repay his kindness.â Her words stunned Lorraine.
âI should run to Edison and say âHow about we get married for real, I wonât leave you. I know why youâre so kind to me, I love you too.â Do you think I should respond to him like that?â In a level voice, Hayden looked at Lorraine, âIn your eyes, Edison is very kind to me. But keep in mind that I married him, but he also treated me like a friend. He never asked for an answer from me, did you think I would turn him down?â.
âI think you would have.â Lorraine looked at Hayden.
âIf he didnât approach me with the fear of loss, he would have had more fears after I was actually with him. There is a knot in his heart, which makes him have no faith in love. He is kind to me, not because of love, but because of the hopes of love in his heart that will never go away.â
Hayden looked at Lorraine with a serious countenance, âAs for the knots in the heart, I think you know them well.â
Lorraine was a bit taken aback.
âIâm going to the hotel. Please tell Edison that Iâm very tired and wonât be seeing him today. Weâll have dinner tomorrow night.â
Looking at Haydenâs back, Lorraine felt for the first time that Hayden knew Edison better than she did.
Hayden reminded her that Edison had a knot in his heart.
She thought Hayden had healed his wounded heart, but he had not. He had been hurt badly. A man automatically avoids hurt, so he unconsciously hid the sad past deep in his heart. And the wound cannot heal for so long buried.
The thorniest thing was that Edison had been abandoned by his lover. It had nothing to do with Hayden.
After arriving at the hotel, Hayden took a shower and then lay down on the bed to have a video call with Joseph.
âIâm fine, are you worried that I wonât come back to you?â.
Joseph curved his lips, âI donât think youâll stay in the U.S. and leave Stella here.â Hayden sat up suddenly, with a double glare.
âThatâs why you signed her up for winter camp and let me come here alone. So you consider her your hostage.â
âItâs wrong to say that.â Joseph made a meek face, âI agree with you, but the girl is not strong-willed. Iâm worried she wonât be willing to come back because of Edisonâs kind treatment. So itâs better for her to be my hostage, rather than Edison.â
âClever.â Hayden rolled his eyes, âYouâre arrogating bad motives to her.â
Speculating, his phone rang.
âI have to take a call.â
Hayden set his laptop aside, and paused after seeing the name on the screen. Then he pressed the green button.
âHello.â
âItâs me.â Edisonâs voice was very deep .
