Rebekah regained lucidity and wiped away her tears. She asked in a low voice, âWho is it?â.
No one answered.
Rebekah was stunned. She asked again, âWho?â
It was half past one in the morning. Customers would ask the front desk for help if they needed anything and only when the front desk was not available, they would come to get her. However, the person outside did not answer her.
Just when she thought she hadnât heard right, the person outside knocked again.
âWho is it?â Rebekah got up and went to the door.
Different people were coming to the inn, so each room had a peephole.
Rebekah looked out the peephole, but found no one.
She was confused, but suddenly a black shadow covered the peephole.
Rebekah was startled and couldnât help but stagger back.
The person outside knocked on the door again.
A piece of paper slipped through the slot in the door.
Rebekah hurriedly touched the paper and looked it over.
There were only a few words on the paper, â[Rebekah, where is our son, is he okay?â.]
Rebekahâs face suddenly paled, she couldnât even regain lucidity. She felt her legs go weak and she fell to the floor.
The knocking on the door had also awakened Benjamin. Benjamin was always a light sleeper, so he got up, even though he had heard a very low noise. He felt uneasy when he heard the knock, so he went out and checked on everything.
There was no one in the hallway.
The reception staff was fast asleep, the front door was closed and the wind chimes were also silent. There seemed to be no one there.
Benjamin hesitated for a second, yet he went to the door of his motherâs room.
He knocked on the door.
âMom? Are you sleeping?â
Inside there was silence. But soon Rebekahâs voice was heard. Her voice was low and strange, âItâs late. Whatâs wrong?â
âWell, nothing important.â Benjamin let out a sigh of relief, âI heard someone knocking on the door a moment ago and no one answered. Did you hear?â
âOh? I didnât hear anything, you must have misheard.â
âReally? Then Iâm going back to sleep. Good night, Mom.â
âGood night.â
The sound of Benjaminâs footsteps faded.
In Rebekahâs room, Rebekah was standing by the door. And on the couch by the window, about six feet from her, sat a man in his fifties. He was smiling coldly.
âWhat are you afraid of? Iâve met you before. It must have been hard for you, raising our son all by yourself all these years. Why donât you come and get me?â
âShut up.â
Rebekah stopped the man in a cold voice. Then she lowered her voice in case the others heard her, âTed, listen carefully. Benjamin is not your son, and our life has nothing to do with you either.â
âOh?â Ted frowned. Then his face turned ominous, âThatâs right. Heâs a little younger than my son should be. So, that young man from the Beckham Family is my son, is he?â.
âWhat are you talking about?â Rebekah gritted her teeth: âMy son has nothing to do with you. Why did you come back, why did you come looking for me?â.
âYouâre as grumpy as ever.â The man sighed regretfully, âYou shouldnât talk so directly, we should greet each other first. Talking to each other like this will damage our relationship.â
âRelationship? Whatâs the relationship between us? You were with me only because you wanted the Beckham property. You lied to me, and youâve lied for years. You bastard.â
âI donât think so. After all I let you discover the deep love Henry had for you. You always wanted a love story, didnât you? The one about a love deep enough to have someone die for you. I didnât do that, but I did inspire another man, didnât I?â
âYou bastard!â Speaking of the past, Rebekahâs face turned sullen and her body trembled, âYou planned that! Even Henryâs death was your idea. How dare you go back after all that?â.
âWhy canât I go back?â Ted snorted, âItâs been twenty years since that case, plenty of time for me to get out of the litigation period. Besides, you donât dare tell the police either.â
âHow do you know I donât dare?â.
âThen go tell the police! Better let everyone know the truth, let them know that the noble Beckham Family Young Master actually has no Beckham blood in him. Let everyone know that he is my sonâ¦â.
Before Rebekah could stop him, the door was pushed open. With the spare key, Benjamin stepped inside and shouted at the man sitting on the couch.
âSay it again!â
Rebekah was nervous, even forgetting that her son was extremely watchful. His voice and words from earlier failed to make her believe that everything was okay.
He must have heard the whole argument between her and Ted.
Ted stood up and smiled arrogantly, âYouâre good at eavesdropping, huh? Havenât you heard? I donât think I need to say it again.â
âShut up!â Rebekah was furious. She just wanted Ted out of here. She shouted angrily at him, âGet out of here! Or Iâm going to call the police!â.
âPolice?â Ted took a deep breath, then snorted, âI donât think youâre brave enough to call the police. You even left the Beckham Family with that little bastard to protect their image. Youâll never call the police.â
However, Benjamin wasnât afraid of anything: âIâm not my mother, I donât care about the Beckhamâs fame. Who are you and what do you want, do you think there are no police in this town?â.
Then Benjamin pulled out his phone and wanted to call the police.
However, Rebekah was quick to stop him.
âMom?â
âYou canât!â Rebekah snatched the phone from him. She took a deep breath and tried to calm down, then looked at Ted, âTalk, what do you want?â.
Hearing this, Ted grinned mischievously, âYou should have said that earlier, do you really think Iâm here to talk about the past?â
âYouâ¦â.
How could Benjamin stand this? He wanted to run to Ted, but his mother stopped him. His motherâs tone-deaf voice came from behind him, âWhat do you really want? I have nothing but this inn. Iâm not a member of the Beckham Family.â
âTwenty million dollars.â Tedâs cold voice was firm, âI donât care if you are a member of the Beckham Family. I need twenty million, in one week.â
âAre you crazy?â Rebekah glared at this man. She wanted to cut this bastard to pieces, âI canât get that much money for you.â
âI donât care.â Ted lit a cigarette. He sneered, âIf you donât give it to me, Iâm going to go to the Beckham Family house and ask my son for money. Iâm his father, so I deserve his pity.â
