Mark stared at her with gentleness and wisdom in his eyes.
âJoseph is stubborn and really believes that you are the one, itâs only a matter of time before he marries you. The barrier between him and his grandfather has existed for a long time, if you could help them erase that resentment, I think Mr. Harrison would be happy to accept you.â
âYou overestimate me, Mark, why are you so sure I can help you?â
âBecause I believe the accident three years ago was not Mr. Josephâs doing, he is cold, not inhuman. The Beckhams just lack communication, we just need you to convince Joseph to sit down and talk to his grandfather.â
At the moment, Haden seemed to be the only person Joseph would listen to.
Markâs intention was good. But he didnât know that Hayden had already investigated the accident and her opinion on the matter matched Harrisonâs. She didnât trust Joseph as much as Mark thought she did.
People change, and Joseph had changed a lot since sheâd known him. He might not do those things now, but the Joseph of the past did.
âMark, what makes you so sure Joseph had nothing to do with it?â
âJoseph grew up under my watch, spent far more time with me than with anyone else. Everyone knows he banished his mother at thirteen. But the truth was more complicated than it seems.â
Hayden was intrigued, and puzzled.
âHer mother was five months pregnant when he demanded she leave, and her parents were always separated. His mother only returned for his fatherâs funeral. That said, how could the baby be a Beckham?â
Noticing that Hayden was still somewhat confused, Mark decided to set the record straight: âAlthough Josephâs mother is Mr. Harrisonâs favorite adopted daughter, Mr. Harrison would not allow such a scandal to ruin the reputation of his son and his family. For the Harrisonâs pride, he would not let the boy survive.â
âSo.â Hayden was surprised, âJoseph did that to protect the boy?â
âJoseph isnât as cold as people paint him.â Sighed Mark, âHeâs just not good at expressing his feelings. Miss Hayden, please help Joseph.â
Hayden was conflicted.
What Mark told her changed her view of Joseph. But she learned the truth about the accident three years ago with Benjamin. If thatâs not the truth, then what is?
She didnât give Mark an affirmative answer, but told him she would consider it.
It was pitch black when Hayden arrived. Benjamin, now a full-time ânannyâ, was lying on the couch with Noah and Stella in his arms. All asleep, snoring.
He set the takeout on a table, and gave Benjamin a gentle nudge to wake him up.
âHi, Hayden.â Benjamin greeted as he yawned.
âGo sleep in your room. Thanks for taking care of the kids.â
âYouâre welcome.â Benjamin rubbed his eyes and then snorted, âWhat did you bring home?â
âSome desserts. Would you like some? Have you had dinner yet?â
âYou bet.â Benjamin nodded, âBabysitting is hard work. The kids are naughty, I almost had to beg them to eat and watch cartoons, but you also told me not to let them watch too much TV. So I almost ran out of things to convince them.â
âAlright, help me take the kids to the room. Iâll fix you some noodles.â
âOkay.â
Benjamin devoured the noodles in two minutes, being left with sauce all over his mouth.
