Joseph was quiet. âSo are you making things difficult for me or for Addison?â.
âHow am I making Addisonâs life difficult? Her mother has mentioned to me several times that whenever you want, they can even have their wedding tomorrow.â Harrison was frowning, âDonât play crazy with me again.â
âAddison is going back to France at the end of this month. Besides her older brother, her whole family will be emigrating to France. So, if you want me to follow her to France, thatâs fine with me. France is a good place to live.â
âWhat?â Harrison turned white and got up from his seat, pacing back and forth inside the house. Then he came back and pounded on the table, âI donât care if Addison leaves or not. Anyway, you have to get married before the end of the year. Youâre already over thirty, but youâre always slacking off, plus you got involved with a married woman. What if the others knew?â
âMarry whoever I want?â.
âYes. Anyone but Hayden!â.
Joseph raised his arms and looked around. Then he pulled Eleanor, who was hiding in the doorway and eavesdropping, âThen let it be her. You know her well and even raised her yourself.â
âHuh?â Eleanor was dumbfounded.
Harrison turned blue, looking at Eleanor. âYou little bratâ¦â.
Mark was horrified, trying to smooth things over. âYoung Master, donât tease Miss Beckham, sheâs your aunt. Itâs incest from the point of view of her seniority, and itâs also illegal from the point of view of age.â
Joseph said expressionlessly, âSheâs Grandfatherâs adopted daughter, no blood relation to me. As for age, itâs grandfather who wants me to get married later this year. If Grandpa doesnât mind, I can wait. How old are you now?â
Eleanor gaped and stumbled as she was held up by Joseph, âThirteen.â
âThirteen, weâll have to wait another five years.â Joseph spoke as he looked at Harrison with a serious expression.
Harrison was so furious that he almost broke the table, âI think youâre crazy, itâs outrageous!â.
Joseph let go of Eleanor and straightened his suit. âEverything Iâve ever done seems unreasonable to you, what else can I do?â.
âGet out of here.â Harrison slapped his hand on the table. Everyone fell silent as Harrisonâs loud voice echoed through the room, âStarting today, youâre not stepping foot in my house until you figure out what you did wrong.â
This time Harrison really was angry.
No one dared stop Joseph from leaving. Mark wanted to persuade him, but was rebuked by Harrison.
âWhoever dares to stop him, get out of here too.â
Mark turned and saw only Harrison sitting on the couch grumbling. âWho did that boy go out to? His father was so nice, how did he ever have a son like that?â.
Mark and Eleanor looked at each other, then looked at Harrison.
This could be known as intergenerational inheritance.
After dismissing Eleanor, who was frightened, the maid went back to pouring the chrysanthemum tea. Mark tidied the chessboard to one side, âThe little lord is still young and impetuous, why should the master bother with him.â
âHeâs still young? Heâs over thirty and still an imbecile with his relations. Am I wrong to let him marry? As for his position now, how much trouble will he get into by not getting married? Is it a joke that Noah has trouble one after another?â
Harrison turned cold as he talked about it, âHeâs always been cold and impersonal. If we donât let him start a family soon and have someone check on him, thereâs no telling what else heâll be able to do in the future.â
âItâs not bad to be unfriendly. When his father was still alive, didnât you think he was indecisive and too gentle? Thatâs why, in the endâ¦â.
Harrison was saddened at the mention of his only son, who had passed away many years ago. Harrison, who was in high spirits, suddenly became depressed: âHenry was a wonderful boy. Back then I was thrilled when he came to see me and told me he wanted to marry Rebekah. But who would have thought such things would happen?â
âItâs my fault.â Mark regretted, âI shouldnât have brought up this sadness. Donât think about it, sir. You havenât finished playing chess yet. Letâs continue.â
âNo.â Harrison stood up, âIâm tired. I want to get some sleep.â
Mark let out a sigh, watching Harrison walk into the room.
Harrisonâs life had truly been full of ups and downs. He had lost his father in childhood and his son in adulthood. Joseph and Harrison had bad tempers, so they didnât get along. There hadnât been many harmonious, warm moments in the family over the years.
Suddenly, Mark remembered that there was a time when they were harmonious. It was a few months ago, when Joseph and Hayden Downey were in a relationship. Back then he even thought everything would be fine.
â¦
Hayden had returned from the supermarket with groceries and spoke into the house as he opened the door, âBenjamin, Iâve bought groceries and Iâm going to the Beckhamsâ to cook for Noah. If you are hungry, you and Stella can cook some noodles to eat. Iâll be back very soonâ¦â.
Before she finished speaking, she saw many pairs of shoes scattered on the porch as she looked down to change her shoes. Obviously there were two pairs of menâs shoes.
As Hayden stood there dumbfounded, a little boy ran up to her, hugged her and called out softly, âMommy?â
âNoah?â Hayden was dumbfounded and overwhelmed, âWhy are you here?â.
âI knew they were self-invited, but he claimed you made them come.â Benjaminâs voice came from the living room.
Hayden looked up and saw Benjamin glaring angrily at Joseph. âWhat else do you have to say now? Hurry up, get your things and leave.â
âWhatâs going on? Eleanor, why are you here, too?â
Hayden was carrying Noah in his arms, he walked into the living room and saw a line of people on the couch, from left to right in height was Benjamin, Eleanor, all the way to Stella. All three were glaring hatefully at Joseph, sitting on a single couch.
This scene was absolutely unnerving.
As he thought, Noah let go of Haydenâs hand and walked over to the couch, sitting next to Stella, and also glared hatefully at Joseph.
What the hell was going on?
âTell me. Whatâs going on?â Hayden returned from washing his hands and stood in front of the coffee table blocking the television, âWhoâs going to speak first?â
âMe.â Benjamin was the first to raise his hand, feeling indignant, âI just came back from taking Stella out to lunch and saw this girl crouched down in front of our house.â Benjamin pointed to Eleanor, who was standing next to him, âThis girl claimed to be a friend of Stellaâs, so I let her in. But it turned out she had no intention of leaving, as she ran away from home. I wanted to call the police, but before the police arrived.â Benjamin looked at Joseph, âShe brought this kid here, and she said you agreed to have dinner at our house. Did you agree to it, Hayden?â
âYour house?â
Josephâs cold, deep voice rang out, and he was obviously unhappy with Benjaminâs words. He narrowed his eyes at Benjamin coolly.
