Hayden sensed that Harrison suspected her of stalking Joseph and felt aggrieved about it.
Hearing her words, Harrisonâs face turned a little pale. âYou were the one who broke up with him? Tell me. what are the reasons you think Joseph isnât good enough?â.
Hayden was stunned for a moment.
Mark immediately remembered Harrison, âSirâ¦â.
Only then did Harrison regain consciousness, coughed, and changed his tone, âItâs good that you know what you should do.â
Haydenâs expression returned to normal: âStella still has to have lunch. Weâll go out for lunch on the street.â
âWait a minute.â Harrison stopped her.
âSince youâve come to cook for Noah, you shouldnât leave when youâre done. In the Beckham Family, people who come to work will always be appreciated, not to mention you still have to come again later, it would be too much trouble for you to come and go.â
âNo need.â Hayden, however, thought that staying there would be the real hassle.
âIf you donât think itâs weird, you can have dinner with us, as a guest of the Beckham Family.â Harrisonâs voice was cold and intimidating, as if to say Hayden was thinking something unkind for not staying to eat with them.
Frowning, Hayden hesitated for a moment. He thought he might join Noah at the dining room table. So, he agreed, âSince you say so, sir, it would seem like Iâm being pretentious if I didnât stay and eat with all of you.â
When she agreed, she didnât think much about what Harrisonâs intention was. It was only when she got to the dining room and sat down across from Addison that she understood Harrisonâs intention in asking her to stay there to eat.
Harrison was trying to show him that Joseph already had a girlfriend and that he shouldnât come any closer to him.
Hayden felt that his action was ridiculous and looked at Addison who was sitting across from her. She smiled at Addison politely like a polite person.
âYou two should meet. The company Addison works for has worked with Hotel ST before.â
Harrison looked around at both Hayden and Addison. When he looked at Addison, his gaze was obviously much more affectionate.
Hayden sensed that things in this world were really changing fast. A few months ago, Harrison had said that she would be the one to marry Joseph. At the time, she didnât even look at Addison. However, at this moment, she liked Addison a lot compared to her.
He didnât think too much about it. As she was putting her head down, Joseph led Noah into the dining room.
Since Hayden had his back to the dining room entrance, he could only guess which people entered by listening for footsteps. When the maid greeted him, Joseph kept walking forward. He stopped walking when he reached a certain position behind Hayden.
âGrandfather⦠Why is she here?â
Of course, the question Joseph asked was why Addison was there.
However, Harrison said, âAfter all, Miss Downey came to cook for Noah. Although she insisted on leaving, it seemed to me that was no way to treat guests. Therefore, I asked her to stay for lunch together. Joseph, come and sit down.â
Hayden secretly clenched her fingers tightly. She felt really disappointed.
She knew Joseph was going to get engaged to Addison, and she was still here to join them for lunch. She must be crazy to do such things.
She was so embarrassed that she wanted to dig a hole in the ground and disappear from it, she didnât notice Joseph standing behind her. Furrowing his eyebrows, he asked, âWere you planning to leave here immediately after cooking?â
Hayden turned around and told him in a muffled voice, âI just came to cook for Noah. Itâs not appropriate for me to stay here.â
âFine.â Josephâs face turned somber, âThatâs good enough.â
Hayden didnât know what his words meant. He sensed that he was a little upset and that maybe he had said something wrong.
âNoah, come sit next to Grandpa.â Harrison waved his hand affectionately at Noah.
âNo.â Noah said firmly. He shook off Josephâs hand that was holding his and walked straight over to Hayden. He used his hands and legs to pull himself up onto the chair next to Hayden. Just like last time, he sat on Haydenâs right while Stella sat on his left.
Harrison frowned, âNoahâ¦â.
âLet him do whatever he wants.â Joseph interrupted his words. He walked past Hayden and sat down next to Addison. Hayden was across from him and only a few plates separated them.
This made Hayden very uncomfortable.
Hayden could only keep his head down while they ate, do that or take the plates for the two children. He didnât even dare to look up.
Of course, she could convince herself to put the past behind her and distance herself from Joseph. However, she felt really uncomfortable watching Joseph having a sweet time with Addison.
âAddison, try this.â Harrison asked Addison to take an avocado.
Addison, however, didnât say many words. She kept looking at Joseph and Hayden. She looked like she wanted to say something, but didnât dare say it at the moment.
âAddison, last time your father came to play chess with me. He mentioned the engagement between you and Joseph. I think the 23rd of next month is a good date, Iâm going to ask the housekeeper to check the weather that day. If there is no problem, we can finalize the date, so that both families will be relieved as well.â
Harrisonâs voice echoed throughout the dining room. Hayden felt for a moment that the atmosphere was suffocating.
âIs it that urgent?â Addison said in a hurried tone. âI donât think we should be in such a hurry. Joseph and I are just getting to know each other. In factâ¦â
âWhat do you mean youâre just getting to know each other? Youâve known them for decades.â Harrison directly interrupted her words. He said seriously, âLetâs nail down the date.â
âGrandpa, Joseph hasnât agreed yet. I donât think itâs a good idea.â
âWhy would Iâ¦?â Before Harrison finished his words, he looked at Hayden with a complicated expression. He changed the words he wanted to say, âJoseph, what do you think?â.
Hayden was taking the plates for Noah as if nothing had happened. But if one looked closely at her, one could find that Haydenâs movement was stiff as if she were a robot, âNoah, eat this.â
Joseph stared at her for a moment. Seeing her shrug it off, he suddenly put on a cold expression. Her thin lips parted slightly and her clear voice echoed throughout, âI have no problem with that.â
When Hayden heard her words, he held his breath for a long time, as if he couldnât exhale. He felt his chest congested as if it was being squeezed by a thousand pounds of rocks.
He said he had no problem with that, so he was consenting to the marriage between him and Addison.
So who was it that promised her that he only treated Addison as his sister and that they werenât a couple? Remembering his promise, she felt it was ridiculous.
âStella, are you done?â
Hayden lowered his voice and asked in a soft voice.
âYes, Mom. Letâs go home.â
Stella looked upset and nodded her head. In fact, she hadnât eaten much. She felt very angry as soon as she saw Mr. Beckham and Mrs. Sanchez sitting next to each other.
Harrison was so mean as to break his promise to her. She was very angry with him.
Hayden patted Noahâs head and smiled weakly as if what had just happened had nothing to do with her.
âIâm sorry, my daughter is sleepy, I have to take her home for a nap. Please, you guys take your time.â
