Chapter 224

The CEO’s little ones1,164 words~6 min read

No one expected the man in the leather jacket to do that.

Even the policemen who were holding him didn’t know how to react. After all, he didn’t attack anyone, not even himself. All he did was talk.

The crowd of people was agitated. They started running in Hayden’s direction.

“I saw her ID card – her name is Hayden Downey, Bentley Downey’s daughter! Get her! Get her to give us our money back!”

The man in the leather jacket was still cheering the crowd.

The situation spiraled out of control.

Hayden was now the center of the crowd. The police and firemen were protecting her, but people were still attacking, berating and humiliating her.

“Get her! Give us back the money!”.

“Give us back the money!”.

This was all Hayden could hear.

When the cops’ team leader wanted to call for backup, a line of black Porsche cars pulled over to the side of the road. They even braked the cars at the same time.

A few muscular men got out of the car and pushed their way through the crowd before the policemen could react.

A young man in a suit then entered the scene and came out carrying the woman who had been attacked by the crowd.

Hayden was unable to see such a heroic scene take place because she was knocked unconscious before she was rescued.

It was already midnight when she regained consciousness.

The room was modestly decorated, but she could still identify the extravagance in the details. There was a sandalwood lamp burning next to the bed, which had a soothing effect.

Hayden pushed himself out of bed, propping himself up on his elbow. The coverlet slipped off and revealed the pink silk nightgown she was wearing.

“You’re awake.”

A familiar voice rose. Hayden lifted his head and saw Edison standing in the bedroom doorway. He held a brown wooden tray.

There was congee with meat and pickles on the tray. It was simple, but it was the most delicious meal for a person who had been sleeping for a long time.

“What a cheapskate you are, you live in an expensive house, And you only offer me a bowl of congee?”.

Hayden sat on the bed as he ate the congee. Edison sat on the couch across from the bed and was reading a travel magazine. He replied resignedly, “Would you be able to consume a bird’s nest and a shark’s fin if I gave them to you now?”

“No.”

“You’re sincere.” Edison shook his head and humored Hayden, “Finish the congee. I’ll bring you another meal when your body has warmed up. For your information, the doctor has said that you have a head injury and that you shouldn’t eat strong food.”

Hayden raised his head and looked at his reflection in the mirror. His head was bandaged and he looked like a mummy. Hayden was unhappy, “Why did you wrap me up like that? I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t told me.”

Edison was resigned, “You need to look like that to end the trouble on the Internet.”

It seemed that playing the victim was the most effective thing to do.

Hayden curved his lips and tried to redo his blindfold in the mirror. She suddenly flinched as a sharp pain shot through her wound as she accidentally touched it.

“Stop moving.” Frowned Edison as he fussed over Hayden.

Hayden was surprised by his straight face and promised him she wouldn’t move. Then she remembered that Edison had saved her from the crowd a moment ago.

“You saved me?”

Edison turned his serious face away and looked at Hayden curiously, “Are you disappointed that it wasn’t Joseph?”

Hayden was struck dumb at the sound of Joseph’s name. He replied sourly, “Can’t you stop teasing me, since you’re so well informed, you should know we’re done.”

Edison looked away from the magazine and glared at Hayden, “I wouldn’t be on time if I didn’t know about your breakup.”

“What do you mean?” Hayden frowned, “Can you be more direct? I’m tired of guessing the meaning of your words.”

Edison did not respond to Hayden’s request. Instead, he changed the subject, “It all seemed so planned, like they were just waiting for you to show up. don’t you think?”

“That’s not possible, why do they want me to show up? I have nothing to do with the Downey Group.”

Edison disagreed with Hayden: “They wanted someone to take the blame, and you’re Bentley Downey’s daughter. You thought you had nothing to do with the Downey Group, but the public didn’t know that.”

Edison was right.

Hayden recalled what happened at Chelsea’s funeral. He asked, “Is it all Chelsea’s uncle’s doing?”

“Hey, you’ve got brains.”

Edison sounded mean, but his tone was kind. It was hard to get mad at Edison.

Hayden rolled his eyes and countered, “You don’t have a brain.”

Hayden changed and followed Edison downstairs for a walk after lunch. Hayden then learned more details of what happened after she passed out.

Edison was worried that people would follow them to the hospital if he admitted Hayden, so he took Hayden back to his villa after rescuing her from the crowd.

“Where’s Stella, have you seen her?”

Hayden was too busy to arrange a meeting between Stella and Edison.

It was a sham marriage, but Edison should be Stella’s father according to Stella’s understanding.

“I saw her from afar. It was chaotic, so I asked Lorraine to inform Scarlett that I brought you home.”

“I see.” Hayden nodded.

It was impossible to think of other things under that kind of situation. “I’ll bring Stella to see you next time.”

“I’ve heard that before.” Edison shot a glance at Hayden, “You decide the date. But I’m afraid you couldn’t even find time to meet with me after I fly back to the U.S. when my vacation is over. You’re even busier than the President of the country.”

“I’m serious. Then you decide the date, I have no objection.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Edison then continued in a mocking tone, “Let’s meet this afternoon.”

…

“Mr. Beckham, just as I thought. Edison has been contacting many companies in N-Town. It’s as if he’s looking for people to collaborate on the development and advertising of an artificial intelligence product.”

“Who has he contacted?”

“Here’s the list.”

Magnus placed the document on Joseph’s desk. Then he asked hesitantly as he saw Joseph concentrating on reading the documents, “Mr. Beckham, have you seen the news today?”

“No. Why?”

“There was a man who wanted to commit suicide on the roof of the Downey Group.”

Joseph stopped flipping through the pages, but his expression seemed normal. “So?”

“Miss Downey showed up and her identity was exposed. The public is furious, I heard she was attacked and injured by protesters.”

Joseph clutched the document in his hands, and there was fury in his eyes.
