The city was clean after several days of heavy rain, the air smelled fresh in the early morning after the rain, but unfortunately the good times would not last long. The sun came out early in the afternoon, and the whole city fell into the endless monotony of summer, even the chirping of the crickets was hoarse.
Kevin locked himself indoors for several days. The housekeeper came every day to tidy up the place at a fixed time. However, she could no longer stand the foul smell coming from the room and called her sister.
âKevin.â Lindsay Jackman opened the door directly and entered the house.
Kevin lived in an older condo, where the two floors were connected to each other. The downstairs was renovated into an open room, and upstairs was the living room. The decorating and renovation was supervised by a person sent by Lindsay. It was Nordic minimalist style, which made the place look bright and clean.
The housekeeper was quite responsible, the door was neat and clean. But when she took a few steps down, Lindsay felt choked by a whiff of sour smell. She held her nose and shouted downward:â
âKevin, donât you dare tell me you took a shit in the room. Are you still a normal human? How did you make the place stink like that?â.
There was no movement downstairs.
Lindsay hesitated for a moment, overcame the nausea in her stomach, and took the first step to leave.
At a glance, she saw that the whole place looked like a dump. All kinds of bottles, snacks, and miscellaneous items were piled up on the floor. On top of the small table was a mountain of garbage. It was piled with take-out food containers.
âYou can still drink and eat and even order takeout! Stop playing dead!â
Lindsay was furious. She used one of her hands to move the blanket and another to touch the containers on the table. âIâm going to dump all the food on your head! You know Iâm really busyâ¦â.
Before she finished her words, Lindsay turned her head and saw that all the take-out containers were not open at all. Her expression suddenly changed.
âKevin, how long have you not eaten?â.
All the take-out containers on the table had not been touched at all.
The person under the covers was silent, as if dead. Lindsay panicked and opened the blankets. She stared at what was under them.
Then, she ripped it off and threw it on the floor to release her anger.
âGoddamn it! You bastard!â
The husky stuffed animal rolled into the corner innocently. The bells around its neck jingled for a while before calming down.
Lindsay grabbed her purse and angrily stormed out of the apartment in her 12-centimeter heels.
âYou cheated on me, you little brat.â
Downstairs in the inpatient department, Alayna had just finished eating with Hayden. They were sitting in a booth chatting.
âSo that day you turned down his proposal without giving any reason?â
âWhat reason?â Alayna looked down and smiled as if laughing at herself, âI donât think I need to explain my reason, itâs my problem. Heâs that kind of Young Master who used to be free, if I really trust him with the rest of my life, it will prove that I really have a problem in my head.â
âBut itâs been so long, havenât you recovered, and didnât the doctor say that as long as you keep your emotions stable, youâll be fine?â
âIâm not recovered.â
Alayna lifted her head and looked seriously into Haydenâs eyes. âItâs not something that can be fixed, itâs just not happening at the moment. Itâs like an ill-timed bomb, you never know when itâs going to go off. The years I joined the military were the quietest for me. If it wasnât because I want to experience more about life, I wouldnât leave that place. You see, nothing can catch me.â
The Army didnât allow for mood swings. They just had to obey orders, but Alayna didnât want to lock herself in that place forever. So, since she chose to live, she would have to deal with the life she chose.
âItâs not Kevin who wants to trap you, itâs you who doesnât want him to be trapped by you.â
Haydenâs words broke the mystery.
Alayna originally smiled and her smile suddenly froze.
Hayden thought her words had been too direct, and was about to make amends. Then, she noticed that Alaynaâs gaze was not fixed on her, but was directed directly over her shoulder and looking behind her.
Hayden followed her gaze and saw a person he could hardly recognize anymore.
A bearded man was standing outside the booth. His white shirt was stained with an unfamiliar yellow substance, the midday sun shining brightly on him, which looked painfully hot.
It was Kevin.
He was the man who dressed neatly for a meeting at the hotel. He would spray on a unique perfume and even arrange his locks of hair so that they were perfectly neat.
Did that man become so scruffy even like that?
âHmm⦠Alayna, Iâll be leaving for a while.â Hayden stood up and wanted to excuse himself.
âNo need.â
Alaynaâs voice sounded deliberately cold, because she had never been a cold person, even when she argued with people, her voice was fiery, like a flame exploding with energy at all times.
âI think I made that very clear to you the other day, Kevin. Now, you come to me and make yourself look like those men in those pathetic dramas, thinking you can gain sympathy for saving something this way.â
âNo.â
Kevin took a step forward, his tall frame blotting out the blazing sun and casting a shadow over her.
Hayden took two steps to the side, but she still felt like she was being tortured out of breath by the aura of these two people, it was really depressing.
âIâm just coming to confirm something one last time.â
âConfirm what?â
âI want to confirm that what you told me that day is true. Say it again if you dare.â Kevin gritted his teeth as if the words were coming out clenched between his teeth.
âThese last two days I thought I was dead. Those words you said were like a knife sticking in my heart over and over again, say it again if you have the guts.â
Alayna was good at scolding men.
Hayden had long witnessed her skill. After all, she was not a good woman. All these years, sheâd had dozens of boyfriends. Sheâd also met men like Kevin who really loved her to death.
âWait a minute.â
Before those words could come out, Hayden forced himself to break the stiff atmosphere and flashed a smile.
âSorry to interrupt, before the two of you start arguing. Kevin, let me ask you a question, do you really like Alayna, what is it about her that you like?â.
âHayden, why are you asking him about this? Heâs not in love with me. He has lots of women, and he doesnât really need me.â Alayna was still feigning coolness.
Hearing this, Kevinâs brow furrowed sharply. He confessed aloud as if he had made a big decision, âHow do you think I donât love you? Iâve never seen a woman who had so much passion for the world, a passion that burns like a fire. You have a wild imagination, and a freedom that no one can take from you. You are a woman far more splendid than fireworks.â
Her voice was strong and full of assurance and confidence.
However, the last glimmer of light in Haydenâs eyes faded. He sighed quietly, looked at Alayna and said, âGo ahead and argue with him.
If everything you liked about her was false or even totally opposite, will you still like that person? Alayna was this kind of person.
âKevin, go away.â
The voice in the booth was suppressed and low.
âThe number of sexual partners I have is no less than yours. Weâre just having fun, whoever gets serious first loses the game. So donât be embarrassed.â
