This man seemed to be a deep person. He wouldnât accept anything, even if it was money, without an equivalent exchange. Hayden decided to cut to the chase: âWhen you go again to see the Bevis family, take me with you as an assistant. After the deal, you will offer to go through the house to see if there is any other furniture. And I will look for the person I want.â
The man stared at her for a moment.
âDeal.â
The manâs assistant called him Señor Sanchez, so Hayden followed the way he called the man. This time, they entered the Bevisâ house smoothly, with Hayden following behind them. It turned out that the woman who had driven her away wasnât there, and she had less trouble.
Hayden examined the desk and then gave Señor Sanchez a meaningful nod after checking it out.
Señor Sanchez looked at the Bevis, âWeâll take it at the price youâve offered.â
Arnoldâs older brother Edward, who was selling the furniture, was overjoyed and extended his hand, âThank youâ¦â.
The assistant next door walked past Mr. Sanchez to shake Edwardâs hand, âSo, the fund will be transferred to your account in half an hour and weâll have someone here to take the desk. We still have time, can we take a walk around to see if you have any other furniture?â.
âSure, of course.â
Edward hoped they could buy more here.
Señor Sanchez was very generous. Many people came to see this desk, but no one could afford the price he was offering.
Hayden followed Señor Sanchez and his assistant to the patio, where he pretended to look at the furniture. After passing by, they went into the courtyard. Edward followed them and explained, âThis is where my little brother lives. His furniture is new and nothing special.â
Hayden scoffed, âYouâre not hiding some treasure here and youâre afraid Mr. Sanchez will see it?â
âHow is that possible?â Edward waved his hands and said helplessly, âIâm telling the truth. You can take a look if you donât trust me, Iâm just afraid to waste his time here.â
The assistant, who was not far behind Hayden, muttered, âYou really take her to be a secretary herself.â
When he finished saying that, he raised his head and saw the boss looking at him with a deadpan expression, âIf you think itâs troublesome, Iâll take Devin with me next time.â
The deputy felt a shudder and was embarrassed, âI didnât mean it like that.â
âThen cut the crap.â
Hayden smelled the rich milky flavor as he walked into the backyard. Edward, at his side, explained, âMy little brother is a pastry chef and just retired. Heâs used to making these kinds of pies and the smell is strong. How about we go to the other places and take a look.â
âMake pies?â Hayden feigned surprise, âAre there any that are already made? Señor Sanchez hasnât eaten yet. If there is, we can buy some to have on the way.â
Edward waved his hand, âNo need to buy it. You can take it with you, Señor Sanchez, what flavor do you prefer, sweet or salty?â.
Señor Sanchez looked at Hayden and seemed to question her.
This woman was really good at improvising. He had never said what he wanted to eat, but she was already getting cheeky.
Hayden then blinked at her, wanting her to act accordingly.
The aide on the side couldnât stand her anymore and wanted to speak, but a clear voice rang out before him, âShow us the way.â
The aide was stunned, raising his head and looking at the boss for a while, his jaw dropped.
Was the chief acting surprisingly in agreement with the woman?
Hayden gave him a grateful look and thought the man was so considerate, knowing that the person she was looking for was in the kitchen.
Edward passionately led the three people into the kitchen, where the fragrance of bread came from. They felt the warmth as they entered the kitchen.
Hayden saw a familiar figure kneading dough in the kitchen, and it was precisely Arnold. And he seemed to have fully recovered.
âArnold, Señor Sanchez just came in to buy furniture, I brought them all the way down here so they can take a look at the loaves youâve made and you can serve them some.â
Arnold nodded without looking back and said, âSure, take as many as you want.â
Edward pointed to the table next to the oven, âMr. Sanchez, this way, please.â
There were all kinds of pastries, which were also the specialty of the ST Hotel. It would be complicated for the hotel to hire a new pastry chef after Arnold had left.
âSeñor Sanchez, take a look and see which one you prefer.â Hayden recommended to Señor Sanchez, âThis puff pastry with duck oil looks good. The place where I worked before also had this, itâs their specialty.â
As she finished speaking, behind her, where Arnold was standing, something fell to the floor making a loud noise. The crowd looked back and saw the sifting tool on the ground, with white powder scattered everywhere.
Arnold was lost, pinned in place, staring at Hayden. âMiss Downey?â
Edward frowned, âWhat happened to you? You scared the hell out of me.â
Hayden frowned, also looking surprised, âArnold?â.
A few moments later, Arnold washed his hands and walked into the living room. The house was quiet and they could hear Arnoldâs wife screaming as she fed the chickens.
Señor Sanchez and his assistant had left. Edward asked no questions and led the people out, after learning that Hayden and Arnold knew each other. The two stayed in the backyard.
âMiss Downey, did you quit your job?â
âPretty much, since I was in charge during the fire accident. As you can see, I now work for Señor Sanchez.â
Arnold seemed nervous at the mention of the fire. He was fingering his pants pocket to pull out a pack of cigarettes. As he was about to light his cigarette, his wifeâs cursing, grumpy voice sounded from outside, âKeep smoking and youâd better smoke yourself to death.â
Arnold felt ashamed. He put the cigar back in the box after hesitating for a while and said, âWhat a coincidence. I thought you were here for me.â
âWhy would I be here for you?â
Hayden shot him a puzzled look as he glanced toward the door. âBy the way, thatâs your wife isnât it? I saw her this morning, but why did she tell me she didnât know you?â
Arnold was startled for a moment and then stammered, âShe was arguing with me-didnât you hear it too?â
âJust because you smoked? That should be it, because of that habit, you have caused huge losses to the company. The back kitchen equipment alone had cost tens of millions.â
Hayden seemed indifferent, as if she was talking about a matter that had nothing to do with her.
At Haydenâs words, Arnold lowered his head, feeling somber.
âWell, I still have to accompany Señor Sanchez to take a look at the furniture. Iâll be on my way.â
Hayden stood up abruptly.
