âOkay, I know, thank you, youâre the best.â Taking off her shoes, Addison leaned back on the couch smiling. Suddenly, her face shadowed, âAh, yes, I want to ask you something.â
ââ¦â.
âYou told me that Joseph had a new girlfriend, is she the hall manager named Hayden?â.
ââ¦â.
âNothing. I saw her today, sheâs quite pretty. Well, I still have things to do, see you next time. Let me buy you lunch when Iâm done with this project.â
Hanging up, Addison put the phone away and groggily lay back against the pillow.
She remembered the woman she had seen this morning. She was young, but not as pretty as she was. And she looked like the meek type who didnât have much of a temper. There was nothing special about her, she didnât look like someone Joseph would fall in love with.
Was it because he was getting old and picking someone at random as a companion? Addison wondered.
Well, no matter what kind of woman she was, she was an enemy as long as she was around Joseph. The reason Addison came back this time was to get back together with Joseph.
â¦
The next afternoon, when Hayden was on duty in the lobby, he saw a familiar car stopped at the door. His eyes lit up and he approached it with long strides.
Before he reached the car, he saw two people getting out. It was Joseph and Addison.
âTake me to lunch later, Joseph. Iâve given your company this huge contract because of you. From now on, your hotels will no longer have to worry about the influx of customers, whether itâs high or low season.â
âWhat do you want to eat?â
âChinese food. Iâve been abroad for so long that I havenât had a chance to eat Chinese food.â
As they were talking, they noticed someone looking at them in the distance.
âIs that you again?â Addison frowned, âDidnât I tell you? While I have no right to interfere with your employerâs management system, I donât want to see your irresponsible face while Iâm still here.â
Haydenâs face turned pale and his hands clenched into fists. He wanted to greet Joseph, but at that moment he would be doing him a disservice. He lowered his head in embarrassment.
âIâm so sorry.â With that said, she turned and walked away.
Frowning, Joseph asked as he looked at Haydenâs back, âWhatâs wrong?â
âWell.â Explained Addison casually about what had happened the day before, âPollen allergies can cause asphyxiation and there are many such cases overseas. Isnât she the ward manager? Why did you hire someone like that as a ward manager? You should talk to your HR department.â
âItâs just a minor matter.â Joseph glared at her, âIâve never seen you worry about such petty things.â
âI didnât used to run a huge company.â Addison blinked, âItâs a cruel world out there, I know it best after striving for my career for so many years.â
Speechless, Joseph looked toward the door where Hayden had exited and felt bad. âAll right. But letâs let this one go.â
âLet it go? This isnât your style, Joseph. You used to fire an employee immediately if you caught him being irresponsible. What, are you mesmerized by that girlâs beauty?â
âSheâs my fiancée.â
Hearing that, Addisonâs smile froze and her eyes instantly bugged out.
On the evening of that day, the SG Travel Agency inspection team had dinner with ST Group staff at the hotel as a pre-celebration that they had passed inspection. Hayden was invited and sat next to Joseph. Sitting next to Joseph, she felt uncomfortable about what had happened in the evening.
Addison raised her glass, âCheers to Principal Downey. I didnât know you were Josephâs fiancée, excuse my ignorance.â
There was an implication in this comment. Explicitly she seemed to be apologizing to class, but implicitly she implied that she was only apologizing for Joseph, and that Hayden was nothing more than a good-for-nothing who had gotten where she was because of her connections.
âIt was my fault, Iâm glad you donât mind. I should drink this as punishment.â Hayden raised his glass as his heart filled with aggravation.
As she was about to drink it, Joseph grabbed her hand as he looked at Addison.
âSheâs bad with alcohol. Iâll drink this for her.â After saying that, he took the glass from her hand and finished it in one gulp.
Staring at her wavy Adamâs apple, Hayden felt better than before. She consoled herself with the thought that even though she was being mistreated at work, she was still appreciated in her love life.
No one noticed how crooked Addisonâs expression became when Joseph said he would drink the wine for Hayden.
During dinner, unlike his usual behavior, Joseph drank quite a bit with people, which was partly for Haydenâs sake. At the end of dinner, he went to the bathroom.
Hayden was waiting for him in the living room. After a long while, Joseph still hadnât returned, she went to the front desk to get some medicine in case he threw up in the bathroom. Then she grabbed a hot towel and went to find him in the bathroom.
Just as she reached the bathroom, she heard a womanâs voice and stopped at the door.
Unconsciously, he raised his head to look at the sign. It was the menâs room.
She was immediately stunned when she heard what was going on inside.
âJoseph, it was my fault six years ago. I was just a teenager, I didnât know what love was, I just tried to run away from the marriage my family arranged for me. I didnât even ask myself if I loved you.â
Standing in the bathroom doorway, Hayden clearly saw Joseph standing with his side toward her, and Addison was leaning against his chest, sobbing gravely.
âJoseph, I know you love me, I know you wonât leave me. Kevin told me you made a necklace with the emerald your grandmother left you, and your grandmother told you to give it to your wife. I understand it all now.â
At that moment, Hayden felt his head explode, he had nothing left but ruins, he had completely lost the ability to process any thought. He wanted to flee the scene, but his legs would not respond to his command.
That was until she saw Joseph raise his arms and embrace Addison. His deep, gravelly voice lingered in the bathroom clearly, carrying a tinge of complaint, âAddison, Iâve lost the necklace.â
Hayden couldnât take it anymore. A sudden spurt of strength came over him. He turned and ran. He kept running away from the hotel until he found himself in the middle of an intersection, with streams of cars passing around him.
He stood against the fence, bent over holding his knees and gasped furiously.
Only then did he realize that in his hands were medication and a cold towel.
