âI have something to do, Iâll be back at the company tomorrow afternoon.â After hanging up the phone, Joseph stepped on the accelerator and headed straight for the highway.
It was already dark. GX City was two hundred kilometers away from N City. Joseph did not stop the car the whole way, after more than two hours, he arrived at the hospital.
As soon as he reached the door of the ward, he heard Haydenâs screams coming from inside.
âWhat are you doing? Let go of me.â
Without even thinking, Joseph immediately opened the door and rushed inside.
On the hospital bed, the man with a gauze on his head was wrapping his hands around Haydenâs waist. Even though he had gauze on, you could still tell he was quite handsome. Hayden struggled to wriggle free, but surprisingly the man jumped off the bed and reached out again toward Hayden.
Josephâs face changed and he moved forward. He grabbed the manâs neck from behind while with his other hand he pulled the manâs arm behind his back. The man screamed miserably.
âHey, let him go quick, heâs just been patched up. You canât do this to him.â Hayden continued, âLet him go quick.â
Joseph scowled and threw him down on the bed, speaking in a cold tone. âThis kind of scoundrel doesnât deserve to survive a car accident.â
That âscoundrelâ understood what Joseph meant and was scared out of his wits. He hastily crawled on the bed and wrapped the blanket tightly around himself, revealing only a pair of eyes.
Only then was there silence in the room.
Hayden breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Joseph. His mood was somewhat complicated, âWhy are you here?â
âAn employee of my company has run over someone, so I came to take a look, in case someone takes this opportunity to spread some news that I hurt the company.â
Joseph responded with self-assurance and his tone was somewhat aggressive. He was actually intimidating Hayden who had been out of work for a long time and did not know that the group had a special team of publicists in charge of such matters.
âThe police have clearly investigated. My car has a tape recorder and itâs true that he suddenly got out himself, so I couldnât hit the brakes in time. But at the time, I was looking at the navigation on my phone so I also made a mistake⦠Iâm sorry.â
Hayden really thought he was here to scold her for doing something wrong.
Joseph frowned and looked slightly impatient, âWhy are you apologizing? I heard from your assistant that heâs just a bum Is he?â.
The person on the bed looked blond and tall. Other than looking a little silly, he didnât look like a bum at all.
Hayden was also a little confused. âWhen I hit him at the time, he was really dressed in a raggedy way and looked like he hadnât showered in a long time, his whole body stank. After the examination, the doctor said he has blood clots in his brain and apparently they were there before I hit him.â
âYou have hit a person whose brain is abnormal.â Josephâs words summed up the current situation.
âWhat about his relatives, have you been able to contact them?â.
Hayden shook his head, âThere is no contact information for him.â
âAfter he recovers from his injuries, send him to the temporary shelter in the city.â Joseph spoke directly and concisely. He decided where this âdrifterâ would go with a single sentence.
âI donât think it should be like this. After all, Iâm the one who hit him, so I should find out where he came from. It is possible that his relatives are also looking for him and that his brain problem is caused by me.â
Hearing this, Josephâs face darkened slightly, âAs you wish.â
Seeing Joseph leaving, Hayden quickly went out. âItâs already late, where are you going?
Itâs already very dark outside. You wouldnât have any intention of rushing back to N-Town tonight, would you?
As expected, Joseph looked at her and spoke in disgust. âIâm going back. I have a meeting tomorrow afternoon, do you think I have much time?â.
The reason he had come was to see if she was okay, not to see her get in trouble.
âItâs too late.â Hayden frowned, âItâs going to rain tonight. Youâd better spend the night here and leave tomorrow morning.â
In the morning, GX City had announced the arrival of a typhoon and a storm. Many roads back to N City were next to mountains. Landslides would happen very easily so it was always wise to play it safe.
âWhere do I stay?â
âThis place is not far from GX City. The atmosphere of the inn I was at isnât bad, do you want to consider it?â.
âOkay.â Joseph agreed almost unceremoniously and looked at her, saying, âCome on, I havenât eaten yet.â
Was he being so easily swayed? Hayden froze for a moment and quickly followed Joseph.
As they left the hospital, thunder rumbled. Almost instantly, a curtain of rain came down from the sky and fell on the car windows. Not even the windshield wipers could clear the raindrops.
Joseph sat in Haydenâs car. The car drove the whole way slowly and leisurely. It took them more than half an hour to arrive even though the distance was only a few miles.
âThis is it.â
Hayden put away the umbrella and led Joseph to the inn. He asked the clerk, âIs there any more room? Set up a room for him.â
âIâm sorry, all the rooms are reserved, Miss Downey.â The clerk had an apologetic look on his face, âSince itâs raining so hard, the tourists who were originally leaving renewed their reservations for one more night. So I guess not many inns here will have rooms available tonight.â
âHuh?â Hayden was stunned on the spot. It was awkward. She brought Joseph, but there were no more roomsâ¦.
âMiss Downey, why donât you let your boyfriend share a room with you? The room he was in on the second floor is the largest room in this inn. Itâs certainly no problem for two people to stay.â The clerk smiled meaningfully.
âHe didnâtâ¦â
âAll right.â Without waiting for Hayden to deny, Josephâs voice rang out.
Haydenâs eyes widened. Just as she was about to say something, Joseph had pulled her to walk to the second floor.
âWait, what are you doing?â Back in the room, Hayden squeezed Josephâs hand who was about to close the door, lowered her voice and said, âDonât tell me youâre really going to room with me?â
âItâs you who asked me to stay one more night.â Answered Joseph certainly sure of himself.
âBut I was talking about you staying in another room, isnât it all right for you to stay in a room with me?â.
âItâs all right. Iâll sleep on the bed and you sleep on the couch.â Joseph didnât bother her and walked straight into the room. He looked around and directly sat on the bed.
âHow can you do that?â Hayden was instantly annoyed, âThis is my room, why do I have to sleep on the couch?â.
âThen you sleep on the bed, Iâll sleep on the couch.â
âThis makes more senseâ¦â. The moment the words were spoken, Hayden wished she could slap herself. How could she be fooled so easily by his words?
âI canât, I definitely canât. Iâll find another place for you to stay.â
âWhat are you afraid of?â Joseph looked at her frankly, âAre you afraid Iâll do something to you? Donât worry, Iâm pretty picky and Iâm not that hungry.â
Hearing this, Hayden was immediately irritated, âWhat the hell are you saying, you clearly have an ulterior motive. Donât think I donât know what you did to me that night in the Maldives.â
That night, even though she was dizzy and had a fever after getting wet in the rain, she knew Joseph had kissed her. Only she kept pretending she didnât know.
After she uttered the words, there was no response in the room for a long time.
After a while, Joseph took a step closer to her. He spoke in a low, deep, mocking tone, as if lighting the cumulus fires in his mind, âSo, what did I do to you that night?â
