Chapter 58

I donât know how much time had passed before a nurse from the operating room came out calling names.
âIs Jessicaâs husband here?â
Ryan walked up in big strides. âDoctor! Iâm here.â
Those four words pierced my heart like daggers. The pain caused me to find it difficult to breathe.
All the waiting throughout the day and the decision I had finally made became a joke at this moment. Standing there made me feel like I was a clown.
We werenât divorced just yet.
My husband had already become someone elseâs husband.
Not far away, he asked desperately, âHow is she? Is it serious?â
âShe lost a lot of blood, what do you think? But fortunately, you brought her to the hospital in time, sheâs fine now.â After a short pause, the nurse added as if to reassure him, âThe child is fine too.â
âChild?â
âJessica is pregnant?â
âThey have a child now?â
I couldnât breathe and looked awkwardly at Ryan.
He breathed a sigh of relief, his face finally softened a little. âThatâs good.â
Maybe my gaze was too obvious, or perhaps he finally noticed that someone was looking at him, as he finished speaking, he turned his head slightly in my direction.
Almost simultaneously, I turned and slipped into the fire escape.
I collapsed against the wall, my body crumbling, the scene from earlier began replaying in my mind.
I laughed uncontrollably, as if I were crazy, and as I laughed, a bitter taste filled my mouth.
âHow foolish have I been? Charlotte, he already has a child with someone else. Maybe he only moved because of his grandfatherâs pressure, and you, in wishful thinking, held onto hope for him. You are truly starved for love,â I thought.
Maybe it was time for me to let go. I took out my phone to send him a message, but his call came through just as I was about to send the message.
His voice was calm. âHey, Charlotte, are you at home?
âYeah.â I sniffed, trying to hold back the tears as I asked, âWhatâs wrong?â
âReally?â
âWhy would I lie to you?â I casually said. âBy the way, have you seen anyone who looks a lot like me?â
This time, I wanted to get clear answers, to understand.
1/2
âNo.â He chose to lie.
But I pressed on. âWhere are you? Is everything not taken care of yet?â
ââ¦â He hesitated for a moment, only choosing to answer the second question. âNot yet, I canât come home tonight. Make sure you get a good nightâs rest.â
I chuckled, âIs it a business matter?â
There was a moment of silence at the other end of the line, then he answered calmly, âIâll come back after
I finish.â
He was still lying.
I took a silent breath. âWhen? What about tomorrowâs concert? Are you still going?â
âIâll go.â This time, he didnât beat around the bush and gave a definite answer.
I looked up at the ceiling, letting tears stream down my face. âOkay, Iâll wait for you.â
âThis is the last time that Iâll wait for you,â I thought.
When I left the hospital, it was already dark.
After several rains, the night wind blew like needles through my bones.
I was wearing only a thin dress, but I didnât feel the cold at all. Perhaps it was because my heart had gone cold.
âOuch!â
Someone ran into me headâon and sent me flying into the hospital.
I gasped softly as I was sent backwards. I didnât know what I stepped on, but I slipped. Just when I was about to fall over, someone caught me.
Instinctively, I thought it was Ryan.
But when I looked up, I was disappointed and surprised, I steadied myself quickly, smiling as I asked, â Jack, what are you doing here?â
It was Jack, whom I hadnât seen in a while.
