Chapter 56
In a daze, I thought of the past.

Back then, Ryan and I had only been married for six months. My period was delayed by about 10 days. Even though he always used protection, I still faintly wondered if I might be pregnant each time. When I bought the pregnancy test kit, I was eager to share the news of being pregnant with him.
Now that I really was pregnant, thinking about Ryan standing just a door away, I couldnât muster any excitement or joy. All I felt was fear and nervousness about what unexpected changes might come.
The worst outcome would be losing this child.
The mere two and a half years had turned everything upside down as if we were from different worlds
now.
My legs felt like lead as I walked to the door, my emotions complex, but I found no sign of Ryan outside! Where was he?
All that remained was my handbag, left alone on the metal bench by the door.
Had he left?
I pulled out my phone from the bag, a message was on the screen.
âI have some urgent business. After the medical report is ready, Gary will deliver it home. Iâll be back later, wait for me.â
I sighed and walked outside the hospital. Suddenly, my mind changed.
I already had the ultrasound report in my hand.
It would be easy to make some adjustments now.
I dialed Janeâs number. She answered almost instantly. âI was just about to call you. Where are you? Why didnât you come to work? What happened last night? Why did your phone suddenly turn off? Did you and Ryan have sex?â
She fired questions in rapid succession.
The last question made me blush with embarrassment.
What was she on about?
I chose to answer the first one. âIâm at the St. Heart Hospital.â
âFor a prenatal checkup? Why didnât you tell me? I could have gone with you.â Jane always managed to get straight to the point. âWait. Isnât one of the Frost Groupâs hospitals? Why did you go there?â
I briefly explained the situation to her. âHowever, when came out of the ultrasound room, Ryan had already left.â
âDamn, you almost scared me.â
Jane summed it up. âSo Ryan still doesnât know that youâre pregnant, right?â
âYeah.â

âThatâs good then.â
I hailed a taxi on the side of the road and sat in the back seat. âJane, I feel lost.â
I had originally planned to tamper with the report during this time.
But when I lowered my head and saw the tiny child on the report, my heart softened.
The doctorâs words also echoed in my mind.
Could he change his mind because of the pregnancy?
If so, could I provide a complete family for the child, and would I finally find my own happiness?
âAre you thinking whether he might severâties with Jessica because of the child?â Jane asked after a short pause.
I didnât hide it either. âYeah, am I being foolish?â
âDonât you dare say that about yourself.â
I had expected Jane to scold me once she knew my thoughts, but instead, she said, âCharlotte, I know how much you love him. Love isnât something born out of rationality. If everyone could cut their losses and weigh pros and cons in time, love would be even rarer.â
âBesides, youâve spent a third of your life on him. As long as he gives you a glimmer of hope, itâs hard for you to back away in time.â
âItâs not that youâre foolish, itâs that men are just despicable.â
Her words left me silent for a long time. With a strained voice, I said, âI want to try again.â
