I seemed not to have heard him and continued, âItâs not just that she doesnât like me. You probably dislike me quite a bit too, right? But I know youâre my biological father. Why would a father dislike his own child? Is it because of some enmity between my mother and youâ¦?â
âEnough!â Mr. Shaw cut me off sharply, his face reddening. âYouâve been back in Jelaston for two years, and youâve become just as unruly and aggressive as you were when you were younger?â
âOh.â I received the answer I wanted. âIt seems my birth mother is indeed someone else.â
This was what the psychologist in Frankes had told me.
The more people try to deflect or get agitated when you ask something, the more it indicated there was
an issue.
What I initially suspected was now a certainty.
Mr. Shaw, who was usually quite elegant, looked at me with a hint of disgust. âGet lost!â
âAlright.â I smiled slightly and turned swiftly before he could lose his temper further.
âWait!â He suddenly called out to me. âHave you talked to Grandma?â
I turned back. âYes.â
âDid she mention anything about a willâ¦â
âA will? Did Grandma make a will?â I feigned ignorance in my response.
He sighed in relief, then asked, âWhat about the distribution of assetsâ¦â
âYouâre being too impatient, arenât you?â Iâfrowned, pretending to be angry, âGrandmaâs mind is suffering from Alzheimerâs. How could she discuss asset distribution with me? I advise you not to pressure Grandma either. Otherwise, if she gets upset, it might affect her health!â
Pausing slightly, I casually added, âAfter all, no one knows whatâs in the will. Only while Grandma is alive do we all have a chance to claim our share.â
Back in Jelaston, Jane ordered takeout, waiting for me to join her for a lateânight snack.
We sat on the balcony. After I recounted the events of the afternoon, she took a sip of wine and pondered, âBut if it is Frank, why would he say he doesnât know you?â
âStill unknown.â
1 pried open a beer can with one hand, took a sip, letting the iceâcold, slightly bitter liquid roll down my throat and into my stomach, cooling the summer nightâs heat.
Jane suddenly frowned. âCould it be that heâs suffering from amnesia?â
âNo.â I shook my head. âHe went to see Grandma, and it wasnât his first visit.â
âCould it be selective amnesia, where he remembers everything but forgets you?â she asked.
âJane, are you thinking this is some drama series?â I tossed some food onto her plate. âI feel like heâs

different from two years ago.â
âWell, of course. Heâs in a wheelchair now. How could he be the same as before?â said Jane.
Mentioning that made me a bit silent.
But before leaving the care home, I confirmed with the caregiver.
He had been in a wheelchair from the time he entered the ward until he leftâ¦
Seeing my troubled expression, Jane shifted the topic and advised, âBut, given the severity of the explosion, itâs already very difficult to have survived.â
âYouâre right.â I was being too greedy.
âBut what if he doesnât recognize you? What will you do? asked Jane.
âIf he doesnât come to me, Iâll go find him.â
Two years ago, when I didnât have my memory and didnât recognize him, he didnât give up on me.
I needed to find out what was happening to him.
I smiled. âArenât you getting along well with those upper class women in Jeswood? Could you ask them to help me find him?â
âSure,â Jane agreed without hesitation. Then once we find him, what next?â
