Frank grasped my arm with a firm hold. His usually nonchalant face was now filled with a mix of curiosity and barely restrained excitement, his brown eyes fixed intently on me.
He seemed to have even forgotten to breathe.
It was as if my answer was of utmost importance to him!
âYes.â I was a bit confused. âWhyâ¦â
The next moment, he pulled me into a tight embrace.
His chest was trembling!
This hug was entirely different from the measured and restrained one from before. It felt as if he was handling a precious, recovered treasureâoverwhelming and impassioned.
It was like breaking free from the chains that had bound him for so long.
After a while, he reluctantly released me. His smile was one of unprecedented joy, like a simpleâminded person. âI knew it was you. You must be her.â
He pinched my face. âSee, I told you I wouldnât fail to recognize you.â
âWho am I?â I was somewhat dazed by his actions. âLily?â
âIâm taking you to meet Grandma.â
Almost as soon as he finished speaking, he leaned over to fasten my seatbelt, shifted the gears, and pressed the gas pedal, executing the movements in one smooth action.
The engine roared to life.
At that moment, his unchecked exuberance was even greater than when we first met.
I was puzzled. âWhy are you suddenly so certain that Iâm Lily?â
He had always suspected it before, but had been somewhat uncertain.
After all, there was already a Lily in the Shaw family, and the paternity test report was clear.
He stopped at a red light, looked at me, his eyes reflecting a brilliant glimmer, his Adamâs apple moving slightly. âLily is also allergic to yam. Sheâs been allergic since she was little. When she eats it, she gets rashes all over, just like you.â
âButâ¦â
I couldnât bring myself to say anything that might disappoint him too much. I only added, âThere are many people allergic to yam. They canât all be Lily. Lily probably ate something at last nightâs banquetâ¦â
As I spoke, I realized something was off.
When I saw Lily at the hospital last night, she didnât seem to be having an allergic reaction.
âShe wasnât have an allergic reaction.â

Frank had already grasped the key point, his voice growing cold. âThe dishes at last nightâs banquet were all checked by the butler beforehand, but there were two desserts where the ingredients were mistakenly switched out with yam powder at the last minute.â
Upon hearing this, I fell silent.
Not because I thought I was Lily.
But because, who would go to such lengths to arrange a fake Lily?
The other party clearly didnât expect that a welcome banquet would have such a slip.
In making Lily the center of attention, they exposed the flaw.
I couldnât guess their intentions.
All I knew was that ifâ¦
If I could have anticipated how things would unfold, I might have made different choicesâ¦
We arrived at the Shaw familyâs old residence. Madam Shaw had just finished dinner.
Seeing us, Madam Shaw was somewhat surprised. âFrank, why did you bring Charlotte here? Isnât she still
sick?â
Then, she looked at me with concern. âWhy hasnât it cleared up yet? Iâll call the doctor to take another
look.â
Clearly, Frank was worried about alerting the wrong people and hadnât told anyone.
He hadnât even given Madam Shaw a headsâup.
I smiled gently. âGrandma, Iâm fine. Iâll be better in a couple of days. Thereâs no need to trouble the doctor.â
âGrandma.â Frank helped Madam Shaw to the sofa, his usual casual demeanor replaced with rare seriousness. âI need to tell you something, but please be prepared and control your emotions to avoid distress.â
âWhat is it?â
Madam Shaw sensed something was amiss. âJust tell me.â
Frank motioned for me to sit down before slowly continuing, âAt last nightâs banquet, there were two desserts that contained yam powder.â
