dden confession.
Megan rested her head on my shoulder. âMy relationship with my dad isnât good because his mistress came to the door. I hate him for betraying my mom.â
I was taken aback.
âWhen I was a child, I had poor health and just stayed in the courtyard. I would rarely go out of the house.â
Megan continued, âAfter that incident, we moved out of the Smith familyâs residence, and I even blamed my brother for not leaving with me.â
I lowered my gaze. âHe⦠must have been quite mature for his age.â
âYes.â Megan sighed and spoke with selfâreproach, âLater, I realized he was much smarter and more rational than I was. Only being like him was the right thing to do. Otherwise, everything that belonged to my mom and us would have been handed over to others. I was too immature and capricious.â
I comforted her. âYou didnât do anything wrong. As long as you donât hurt others, itâs fine to make your
own choices.â
She must have been quite young at the time.
It would be hard for young people to think of the big picture.
âThatâs not it. I made mistakes. I moved out of the Smith family while still enjoying the advantages that
came with their power.â
Megan shook her head. âAnd all of this was because my brother took on the responsibility that should
have been mine.â
I patted her head. âBut he must have never blamed you!â
Frank seemed to not care about anything.
But itâs clear that he valued his sister Megan a lot.
After a moment of silence, Megan suddenly called out to me, âCharlotte.â
âYeah?â
She hesitated for a long time before stammering, âDoes Mr. Renolds⦠only like girls like you?â

I was momentarily stunned by her openness and responded candidly, âIâm not sure, but what might reassure you is that Iâve made it clear with him that there will be no entanglements beyond friendship.â
âThen does he⦠have any hobbies or interestsâ¦â
âMegan!â
Frank abruptly interrupted through clenched teeth. âNo matter what youâre thinking, youâd better give up on this. Otherwise, before you get tricked by him, Iâll break your legs first.â
His voice was cold and laced with a lingering roughness.
Megan was startled. Feeling both anxious and annoyed, she said, âHow could you do this? Youâre eavesdropping on our conversation!â
âWho said I was eavesdropping?â
Frank took off the earplugs and threw them at her. âGo ahead and leave a bad review. What a useless pair of earplugs! Theyâre worse than stuffing two pieces of air in your ears. At least air wonât hurt your ears.â
Megan stamped her feet in frustration!
âYouâd better take my words to heart,â said Frank.
âAlright!â Megan responded unhappily and added, âI just think heâs gentle and considerate. If we could have a marriage alliance, it might be somewhat helpful.â
Frank said dismissively, âAm I doing that bad that I need you to sacrifice your own life for me?â
âOh.â Meganâs response was simple, but her tone softened.
However, my intuition told me that she hadnât given up.
She just didnât want to provoke Frank.
After arriving in Jeswood, Frank first took Megan back to the Smith familyâs residence and then headed straight to the Shaw familyâs residence with me.
Madam Shaw was delighted to see us.
